This is where we will discuss everything for our collab song thingy deely.

The first thing I need as a lyricist is a general feel for the song- I'm of the opinion that lyrics and music need to underline each other..
So yeah.

I'm just going to lay out what we have so far. None of this is definite, but it'll give us an idea of what we need. And yes, someone can play more than one part, but just to be completely clear on every task that needs to be done for this, I've separated them.

Lyricist: Sworn2Chaos
Singer(s): Asemo
Vocal melody composer: Asemo
Guitarist:
Drummer:
Bass guitarist:
Composer for guitar and drums and bass:
Composer for classical background music: Lynor Eclipse

So, we're missing people for the real "rock" component of this.

Anyways, here are some examples of what I mean. Of course, the "classical" components in them are famous pieces from past composers.
-"Black, Black Heart" by Usher
-"Lacrymosa" by Evanescence
-"Walking Wounded" by Tea Party

As for the feel of the song, or the subject, what sort of thing should we do, since this will be the basis for the song? Does anyone have any ideas? The only thing that comes to my mind that I think might work is the theme of "friendship" since this is a collaboration, but as all things I've written here, I'm open to more suggestions.

Oh, and I left out the "post-production" roles from the list, since the first thing we need to do is get writing on the music and lyrics. We can worry about mixing, etc, later.

I like the friendship theme idea, maybe with sort of the same feel as "My Best Friend" by Queen - light hearted and happy, or maybe it could be a song with the sort of "tommorow will be better/keep on going" sort of a theme.

Now, for the rock element - we should narrow it down to a sound we all like, because rock is pretty diverse. I would like to try for a Queen-ish sound for the vocals (big range, lots of harmonies), as well as Led Zeppeliny guitar, and a Pink Floydish bass line. But those are just my ideas - nothing solid yet.

For the classical element, I'm thinking we should go with something like in "Black, Black Heart." I like the whole layered strings concept. Also, maybe a flute solo somewhere in there? I dunno.

What do you guys think?

Daniel Boudreau
usually the music is written before the lyrics in almost 90% of the cases....

Do you have actual proof of that? I prefer to do it the other way, and so do most of the people in my composition courses (since our profs had us do it that way), so I'd say (with only my own experience as proof) that 90% do the lyrics first, then the music. (admittedly, a lot of the composers I've associated with don't even write the lyrics themselves, usually borrowing from non-copyrighted poems of the past, or getting permission from someone to use their poem... in which case, again, the lyrics come first).

However, that aside, I don't think that the way that we write music should matter. Obviously you prefer to do it one way and I prefer to do it the complete opposite way. I'm not going to force anyone to do it my way, so maybe we should take a vote on this project:
Who here wants to do lyrics first then music?
Who here wants to do music first then lyrics?

And for that matter:
Who wants the classical side done first?
Who wants the rock side done first?

Edit: I decided to look at that thread in the musician's forum again, where there is a poll for lyrics vs. music first. Taking only the first two answers on the poll ("lyrics first" and "melody first"), adding them, then dividing them to find a comparative percentage, it's: 36.3% lyrics first and 63.6% melody first. So, more than half do do melody first, however, it is NOT 90% in favour of melody first. But, this poll only had 11 people, and I think a larger sample would be more sufficient to get a better idea of how people work (like, at least my composition class size of 35 people). I will give it to you that the majority seen here prefer to do melody first. It doesn't mean that either of us are wrong in the way that we write music, it just means that we do it differently, and what would the world be without diversity?

So, I stand by my questions above: we'll decide as a group how we're going to do this project, because it doesn't matter if the majority of people outside this group does it one way if the people in this group prefer to do it another way. We should do it the way that suits us best. And if that way is the same way as the majority of the people outside of the group, then so be it. I can work with it either way, I know how to be part of a team, and I can set aside my preferences.

Btw, do you want to be part of the project, 'cause I've read over your posts again and you've only mentioned some suggestions for how it's to be done and what you can do, not whether you want to do it.

It seems to make more sense to come up with the lyrics first, because when you make up a melody, you come up with the rhythm that becomes the syllable count, so it really restricts your creative flow.

I say lyrics first, melody later, as it's much more freeing.

Heh, well what do you like to write about? In all honesty, I don't really care what the lyrics are as long as I can write music that works with them, so whatever you end up doing will be fine with me (though, they must be singable lyrics, of course). So, maybe you could post something that you have on friendship, or maybe you could post something else that you feel would be a good piece for a group of people working together to turn it into song.

All I really care about for the lyrics is that they aren't "no one understands" or "Good God I'm depressed." I'd like it to be a happy song.

Can it be bitter happy? Because no good song is ever completely happy- Songs reflect life, and life is bittersweet.

You're writing the lyrics, so whatever you wanna do goes for that, I guess. ^^
Use your creativity.

Hmm, just wondering how things are going with everyone on this project... whether any of you drop by anymore... and an update on my life (whether it's worth anything to this project or not).

Wow, so much can happen in such a short amount of time, can't it? A lot of stuff has been going on in my life since July, but not nearly as much as within this past week. Last weekend I discovered what career will bring me the most joy and fulfillment of everything out there. I've been searching for this for a very long time, and recently I've been very frustrated with not knowing, as I will be graduating next May with my BA degree and then... well, I had no idea what I was planning to do after that. And now I do. I really liked the idea of being a composer for film, because I love music, and I like working on film. But, the film composer is usually quite removed from the whole film process, and they work in a rather solitary environment. This does not appeal to me at all, since I love to be social and to work in a team. So, I started thinking of related things, broadening my perspective... and I found it!

I want to be a sound designer for film. In my heart, I know this is the best thing for me. I am so excited because it is exactly what I was looking for, even though I never knew it! So, I started to look into schools for film/sound design (there are tons around here), and I've found quite a few 1 year programs for it. I'm planning on doing that next year, and then embarking on my career in the entertainment world.

Also over the past week, I did a midterm for my three week summer course (it's going by so quickly, my final exam is next Friday!), and I got 32.5/40 on it. I also got into two courses for this upcoming winter term that I don't have the pre-req's for but I begged and did my best to appeal to the profs of the courses and I got accepted into both of them! Not to mention, I've been preparing to do my language requirement test in French (which I've set up to do on Tuesday). And I've got a phone appointment with one of the advisors from a film school with a sound design program for either Tuesday or Wednesday (they're going to call me) to see whether that's the school for me once I finish this year.

Whew! Anyways, I'm still around if you all want to do this project. I've got two weeks with no current plans coming up before the winter term begins (though, I can see this easily filling up). I'm guessing that it's just the three of us, really, working on this project. So, Sworn2Chaos, write us some lyrics, then Asemo, write the vocal melody and sing it. I can do the rest (hopefully). I think that if you two do that, it will give me the structure of the song nicely, and should be fairly easy for me to orchestrate, including the rock side of things. The only difficulty I think I'll have is making the rock part sound convincing - I really have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to drums and to guitar (and actually, I don't know how many options I have for the timbre of the guitar... I doubt it'll be a wide spectrum of sounds... the only thing I can think of at the moment that I know my program does is the plucking sounds... so I'm at a loss as to how I can create the wonderful range of timbres the guitar is known to produce... heh, though it is true that I want to do sound design... maybe there's a way to imitate it... which means a bit of time spent experimenting... should be interesting...).

Ack! Looks like I've rambled on for a very long time again. What do you think? Should we head forth with this idea? And, if you're up for it and don't mind sharing, how's it been going in your lives lately?
