I've gathered some links as resources for people to use in helping pick creatures

here is a List of Cryptids

legendary creatures

Medieval Bestiary

more Cryptids

Encyclopedia Mythica

Hybrid creatures

there are many more resources than these, but should be a good start

Man with paralysis below hip or other physical impairment becomes Selkie. His seal form works just fine but his guy form is still a beggar.

I perused Raurhund's link to the Wikipedia list of legends and decided to put a few unusual ones here.

The Questing Beast would definitely be unusual. Snake head and neck(although in reality snake necks are extremely short), leopard body, lion haunches, deer hooves, and a voice like "thirty couple hounds questing". As an added bonus, the poor sod who got this creature would be quite unlikely to know what the heck he or she was.

Really, look.

Sirens might be good. Not normal mermaid-style sirens; the older ones. Large birds with big heads, scaly feet, and manes like lions. Women with bird legs and sometimes wings playing musical instruments. Women who were bird from the chest up, little birds with human faces. Maybe even winged mermaids.

Oooh. A Leyak would be veeery interesting. Black magic. Human enough by day except for long tongues and large fangs, at night their heads and internal organs pull free and fly around to eat babies.

Khalkotauroi could be interesting too. Large fire-breathing bull with bronze hooves. In the same vein, the Ceryneian Hind, the doe with golden horns and brass hooves, might be fun.

...It might be worth going over Wikipedia's list of extraterrestrials, too.

I spent time perusing the creatures of Dungeons and Dragons. Gaack.

An interesting version of Harpy...

Grig look like cricket-taurs. How bizarre.

Loxo are interesting. I'm reminded of the elephant demons from Jade Empire.

Ocean Striders- orca-elves. Strange. As are girallon, four-armed gorillas.

Behir look like wingless low-lying dragons with twelve legs . Dragonne are essentially dragon-lions. Tarrasque are vaguely turtle-esque.

Bulette... landshark. I don't know what to say.

I rather like the look of the Achaierai, too. Even if that name is hard to spell. Abrian, too.

The Rast. It looks like this. New meaning to "spider monkey".

The Ravid might be interesting. I think it looks pretty cool, actually.

Coatl are essentialy quetzalcoatl, but they still look cool.

Three-armed ogres. Athach are interesting.

And whoa... D&D has a really different version of the Salamander.

The Slaad. Who doesn't like humanoid toads of various colors?

Another contender in the flying-head-of-death category is the Vargouille. Apparently it's vampiric.

Destrachan. Eyeless kangaroo-dinosaurs. Yikes.

The Catoblepas is normally an herbivore, but every month it must eat flesh. Huh.

Yaay anthro dinosaurs! Saurial and Pterafolk. The latter look more like pterosaurs without fingers to me...

For some reason this image of a Mimic amuses me.

This game is big on humanoid insects. We have the Xill, the thri-kreen, the Formians, the Abeil, the Ettercap(Yes, they're spiders. Even so.)

Game is also big on large canids and canid-like creatures. We have a Barghest, a Leucrotta, a Hellhound, the Howler, a Cooshee, a Shadow Mastiff, a Yeth, a Winter Wolf , and a Worg.

The Displacer Beast is relatively well-known. But look you at the Otyugh. And the Ahuizol.

Fan of Lovecraft? (By which I mean things- designed- to- cause -nightmares) D&D has your Quori, your Ethereal filcher, your Aboleth(Read the page!), your Chuul, your Choker, your Delver, your Mind-Flayer, your Nothic, your Ethergaunt, your Darkmantle, and your Remorhaz

And who could forget the many weird versions of the Beholder?

There are many more, of course. Many of these might not really be suitable for The Changed, if for no other reason than that the artists would have to spend an ungodly amount of time trying to produce these. But they're fun to think about.

Here's a few

The dragon of India and Ethiopia is the largest of all earth dragons. It grows to the length of 180 feet (55 metres). The black dragon of the marshes is sluggsih and has no crest, but the swift dragon of the mountainss has golden scales, a bushy beard and a tall crest of the brightest of fires. Both have a mystical gem in their heads.

The Hydra would be something!

The Tarasqu is a very strange creature. It is larger then an ox, has 6 legs, the head of a lion, paws of a bear, a hard, leathery shell which is covered in spikes and a long serpentine tail ending in a barb.

Of course there's nagas., with a human top half and a snake bottom half or a serpent with many heads.

There's a rainbow serpent, which is a snake with rainbow colouring running down it's body.

The Piasa is a strange creature, it has a face of an angry man, sharp teeth, the beard of a tiger, the antlers of a deer, spiny wings, a scaley body and four bird legs with the talons of an eagle. Wrapped over it's body is a long scorpion-like tail that ends in a fluke (tail fin) of a fish.Anyone turning into that will have no idea what they are.

And there's the Basilisk and Cockatrice.

The Amphisbaena is a dragon with a head on each end. Also shown as a serpent.

The Ki Lin (or Ch'i Lin) is like a eastern unicorn. They have a body of a deer/stag, the hooves of a horse, the tail of an ox, with a fine head, a single fleshy horn, scales of a fish and it's body is bright with the five sacred colours - red, yellow, blue, white and black. Here More info

The Japanese Kirin is also simular although I think has a horses tail and dragon feet. Here

The Lamia is pretty scarey. It is a four footed beast with the head and breasts of a women, a scaly, dragon-like body, a long horse-like tail, it's forefeet are clawed like a bear's and it's hind feet cloven like a goat's.

As well as centaurs there's the Ocacentaur whuch is an a**-centaur, a shaggy beast whose human like torso is covered with course hair. There's nothing on the internet on them, so be the first!!
There's also a deer-Centaur, dog centaur, ect.

The Yale is strange. This creature is tawny or black, is the size of a horse, has the tail of an elephant, the jaws of a boar and long, sharp horns that it can move at will.

The Peryton is a bazaar looking beast. It has an antlered head, legs of a deer and the wings and body of a bird and sharp teeth - it preys on humans and has a shadow of a man until it attacks.

And there's the hippocampus, the front half of a horse (sometimes with fins instead of front hooves) and the lower body of a fish.

Might as well stick this here.

There's a "Guide to Imaginary Kosher Animals" here that mentions some seriously unusual cryptids. It's very funny.

Quote:
Jotai (animated folding screen cloth)A: “Sure, why not? It’s not a food item. Scarf it down to your heart’s delight. So long as it’s made from plant fibers, not a treyf animal. And only one type of fiber–no mixing of wool and linen.” EM: “Doesn’t sound too good…”

Mongolian Death Worm - A: “No, because you cannot eat anything that crawls on its belly.” EM: “Does that mean an injured kosher animal that is crawling along isn’t kosher any more?” A: “Yes, because you can’t eat an animal that’s been injured or is sick.” EM: “It’s a wonder you haven’t all starved to death.”

Pollo Maligno (cannibalistic chicken spirit) - A: “When you say cannibalistic, do you mean a chicken that eats other chickens or a chicken that eats humans?” EM: “When I say Pollo Maligno, I have no idea what I mean except I sound fierce.” A: “Well, chickens are kosher, but if it’s eating meat, probably not…” EM: “POLLO MALIGNO! POLLO MALIGNO!”

The "Pope Lick Monster" is apparently a sheep-goat-human mix. I just thought I'd mention the absurdity of that name.

Cracked.com has an article on the Seven Weirdest Mythical Creatures in the World. It's, uh, rather crude, and Cracked.com isn't the most reliable source, but there are some unusual ones here. I like the Manananggal, at least in part because I have no idea how to pronounce that. razz

And anyone interested in sea serpents might as well go with the Phaya Naga. 'Cause it launches fireballs. And that's pretty boss.
