Meh b/f and I were talking a bit this afternoon, and LotR came up. We started talking about death scenes. My mom of course mentioned Boromir, a.k.a. the Pincushion of Gondor. I have a certain fondness for the sheer absurdity of Gollum's fiery doom. (Watch that last step, it's a doozy!) So then I got curious. Brave, tragic, heroic, or humorous, which are your favorite final moments of a character?

(Poor Boromir! XD)
Since you brought up the hilarious with the horrible, I'm going to have to say that the death of Hunthor "Not the Least Valiant" is my favourite. Because he's my favourite loser. heart crying

In terms of actual heartwrenching death scenes, however, Fingolfin's definetly takes the proverbial cake. Because it made me cheer. ...Stupid Morgoth*. domokun

Pfft. Stupid Fingolfin.

But I do agree with you about Hunthor. He really wasn't the least valiant. Also Dorlas. Though he probably was the least valiant. domokun

Feanor's death made me really really upset. I remember reading it and thinking: "That's it?!?! WTH??? You whined so much about coming to ME and you die on your first battle?????" I think it was the first, wasn't it? gonk scream

I wish he had lived longer.

Finrod's death... crying Boo hoo crying

He had it coming! I mean did he seriously think he could get away with trying to take the Ring? Innocent temptation PHSAW! What goes around comes around! xd
Anywho... I enjoyed the death of Denethor myself. It was so exciting when I figured out it was the palantir the whole time! It was one of those lightbulb going off over my head moments. Oh, and you can't lose with suicide and madness! whee

Ahh this topic is interesting. I can't remember most deaths because, well I don't want to and tend to intentionally forget them. It was super sad when Turin killed Beleg though... oh how I cried at that one. And I've yet to forget it.

From the movies though, I'm sorry I have to say that I LOVE Denethor falling in firey doom. That's the pyro in me talking lol! It's the flaming fire ball. Though I do like the firey burnyness of the book as well but the flaming fireball. *laughs insanely* ok I'm done now *flicks a lighter*

gonk PJ pissed me off royally with that one. Denethor is probably my favorite death of all time -- I just said Gollum because it was kind of funny. Denethor's death wasn't MEANT to be funny, it was supposed to be creepy and insane and tragic, and they just totally overdid it and made it seem comical. scream

I concur wholeheartedly.

I shouldn't have been laughing in the theatre when Denethor decided to snuff it. crying

Bad PJ! *whacks on the nose with newspaper* Yeah, that part made me mad too. I was like "WTF? Denethor was supposed to defy all logic and reason and burn himself willingly, NOT realize his mistake at the last second and throw himself off a building!!" scream

Well, what about the Witch King of Angmar? His death would have sucked. Just by using simple logic and stating that she was not a man, Eowen defeated him. I bet, that had it been Faramir of something, he would have "lived." Also, in the past, women were thought of as weak, so that would have been a pitiful death back then.

Well... she and Merry also stabbed him pretty good. I bet that helped. A lot. xd

Agreed. I was sitting there in the theater going, "Allright! Time for the awesome death scene with the Palantir!" and then they disappointed me. I didn't mind the jumping so much as the Palantir missing - he just seemed like a psycho from the movie, rather than someone corrupted by staring at a seeing-stone too much.

I say that Fingolfin is the best death scene ever. It takes guts to go after the Big Baddie of All Time. Even if you do get mightily smote.

As I understand it Eowyn was having a pretty bad time of it until Merry stabbed him so...technically he was first defeated by a man...well a male hobbit and then a cross-dresser. Not that I don't have huge respect for Eowyn...It just makes me smile.

I know it wasn't supposed to be funny, but the movie version of Denethor's death had me in fits... *smacks hand* But in the book it was tragic; I'd really wanted him to sort it all out with Faramir... crying

Oh, and my friend cried at Snowmane's death... rolleyes She's a big lover of horses; she was probably a Rohirrim in a past life...

In the books though, the best death scene probably belongs to Gandalf. I mean come on, battling a Balrog? Fantastic way to go... and then coming back! biggrin I loved that; turning the page and realising he was back...

I agree, although they could have made Denethor's death a little more true to the book, and still have him be the flaming fireball.

Turin killing Beleg was tragic. I feel so sorry for Turin. The poor guy was never really happy at all.
