Irons wandered the outskirts of the Bones Pack, looking for his hunter absently. He thought about getting more, but truth be told, she was very good. He was almost tempted to let her alone... but he doubted that would last forever, unfortunatly. If the pack grew at all, the efforts of one wolf would not be enough.

A shame, really. She was far more trustworthy than the others, always bringing something worthwhile back to him. It did have a tendancy to make his life easier when it was getting into a bad habbit of being too colmplicated.

At least in the war it had been relativly simple: Kill.

Not far from the pack lands, a rather pleasedAleni sat. She had been almost ashamed to go near Irons, for lately, she hadn't been making the greatest kills, and often only returned with a few hares to be shared amongst her pack mates. Now, she sat beside a large hoofed animal she had taken down just moments before.

It was an animal she hadn't recognized at first, but then again, did she need to? She had been quick to go in for the kill, lunging at the creature, going for it's throat. After a few days of not being as successful as she usually was, she finally got a decent catch.

A sly smile sat across her snout, and she lazily raised a bloody paw to clean it off. Oh, she just loved how beautifully the blood pooled under the animal.

"Well now...Aleni, you've outdone yourself as usual," Irons said, ominus as usual as he appeared out of the woods behind her. He had only been wandering, something not especially unusual for the alpha, but not something he did... often, to put it mildly. Traveling was not his favorite past time.

In that sense, spotting Aleni had been a relief. He was bored off his skull. He did hate things being political, but he disliked being bored even more. Bored meaning nothing exciting was happening. Meaning no war, no fighting, no politics. Szalka was getting annoying. Again, boredom, but hunting, or speaking with his trusted Aleni was far more interesting.

Although startled to hear Irons' voice from behind her, she managed to keep her cool. Remaining silent for the time being, she continued to nonchalantly lick the blood clean from her paw, the sly smile still visible. She respected her alpha, and quite secretly strove for his approval. Nothing more, notching less. All she wanted was to know she was doing her job, and gaining respect at the same time.

"Have I, Irons?" The hunter finally asked, gazing over her shoulder at her alpha, giving him an almost skeptical look. After a moment, she gazed back down at the hoofed creature. It was moderately sized, with hooves and small horns protruding from it's head, and a relatively small tail, what she didn't know was a deer. At least it would be enough to feed the pack, since she supposed her pack mates occasionally hunted for rats and hares in their spare time.

"You have," Irons nodded to Aleni. A good kill, but if the pack kept growing... unavoidable, they would need new hunters. More of them. Aleni was skilled, but she would not be able to do this on her own. That almost made him feel guilty.

Almost.

"Tell me now... how long do you think you alone can feed the pack?" Irons asked her, though there appeared to be no particular reason for the question. There was no hint of it except for the question itself.

With a smug smile, Aleni stood and moved around so she was facing Irons before she sat down ones more. Usually she would've hid the obvious pride she took in receiving compliments from the alpha, but there was no point in it, she realized. She'd have to soak in all of the glory while she could, before the pack began to expand to the point where she couldn't play sole provider.

"Oh, I don't know. It depends on how many more members we take in. Possibly for a little while longer, then we'd probably have to look into more hunters." She rolled his shoulders into a small shrug. The idea of another hunter bothered her a little, but as long as they wouldn't slow her down, she figured she could allow herself to hunt alongside another.

"I understand," Irons nodded, clearly in agreement and glad that Aleni dissagreed, despite himself. He strongly disliked the idea of some new wolf coming in and taking his trusted wolf's job, "I do... dislike the idea, however should the pack grow, there might not be any choice. It... irks me." He wasn't sure how else to put it.

He was not a trusting wolf by nature, and with many (unless it benifited him to do otherwise) it took years to gain his trust. Or nearly dying by his side in a war, which had also happened many a time with his wolves. Aleni, Skule, Kei... yes, them he trusted, it was the new wolves like Szalka that he worried about. Or rather... became concerned about for the welfare of his pack.

Aleni merely nodded, allowing her gaze to settle on the hoofed creature that was still at her paws, uneaten. Blood continued to pour from the poor animal's neck, causing the huntress to wonder if it would look bad if she were to lick up all the blood right in front of Irons. "I should think that it would irk you, Irons," she began in that knowing, almost irritated voice of hers, "I know that some of pack like to hunt for small critters, such as birds and rabbits, on their own, but it's known that I am the sole hunter for the pack. I bring back enough food to feed every wolf and pup, and I go for larger animals, in Feileadh. I know that you have intentions of expanding the pack, or I'd at least like to think you do. The point is, you'll end up having to find another hunter or two if the pack continues to grow, whether or not you dislike the idea of it."

The hunter certainly wasn't trying to tell the alpha how to do his job, oh no. Aleni was merely putting it out there that even she, the wolf who despised it when others tried to hunt alongside her, was certain that they'd eventually have to find others. "All I can say is that when the time comes, I truly hope that you find someone who isn't going to slow me down any, for I am not keen on baby-sitting anyone." After a moment, she paused, nudging the deer with her nose. "I hope I haven't shown any disrespect for you, Irons. At any rate, I'd like you to take this. Just for you. I can kill a few more for the pack later tonight."

Irons sighed, "You are quite right, but do your best to remember your place, Aleni. I do like you being our sole hunter, but it is clear to me that being so has made you forget your place. I am going to find a new hunter, regrettably, for the pack is growing... and more food is nessesary." Not to mention that he had his own pups on their way... which was causing him enough grief as it was.

He stood and began to eat, though he took small breaks also to speak with Aleni, "Join me in eating, Aleni. I wish to spend some time with me while we think on the qualities of a proper assistant for you."

"To remember my place? Forgetting my place? I'm not quite sure I understand what you mean, Irons." Aleni, though quite the intelligent wolf she was, wasn't quite sure what was meant by forgetting her place. Afterall, she knew she was a skilled hunter who provided meat for the pack, aside from the few rabbits that the others snatched up for fun, or just for a quick snack. Still, there had to be more to it if her alpha felt that she had supposedly forgotten her place. Her place as sole provider, maybe? Perhaps, but she couldn't be sure until that suspicious was confirmed.

"Of course." Once again, she tried not to seem overly pleased by the fact that Irons, one of the few wolves she respected and would probably die for, invited her to dine with him. Of course, she had been the one to kill it, but it still made her..giddy. "If they can hunt, they should be fine. Need to be able to kill without feeling bad or anything, and I must've have to constantly watch over them." That would be the death of her. Bending down, she ripped off a chunk of meat from the doe's neck.

"It is not your place, as a hunter, to question my orders, and what I do. Leave that to that Shaman and my beta. I am doing what is best for the pack, that is all you need to know. It is as simple as that," Irons said, also taking a large chunk out of the deer's side, "You are an excellent hunter Aleni. I trust you, it is that simple... so a new hunter who may come from outside the pack... I expect you to deal with it as is appropriet. Watch them, insure that they are also doing what is best for us."

Irons smiled a little bit, "I do not expect you to constantly be watching them. Just take a week or two... to be certain that they understand where they belong in our dynamic. I do not doubt that I will make the right choice, but there can be no harm in being certain."

The moment Irons' words hit her ears, she dropped the piece of the hoofed animals' skin, which she had been tearing at to get at more of its meet. Her tail dropped between her legs, and her ears pressed flat against the back of her head. "I didn't mean to offend, Irons." She murmured in a tone that didn't belong to her usual voice of annoyance. The fact that he pretty much just scolded her was like a huge thorn in her side. A massive, painful, mutant of a thorn that stuck through every one of her organs and sent her on her way to have a slow, painful death. But worse. The idea of having a wolf she looked up to reminding her that she was in no position to question orders, although true, was much worse than a slow, painful death.

It sort of just came with being too loyal for her own good. "Right, right. Baby-sit the new hunter for a week or two, make sure they know where they belong, make sure they're capable of hunting in Feileadh, both at day and at night.." She trailed off, though she screamed on the inside. Watching over a hunter, who could easily just take care of themselves and know their place in the pack at once, was definitely not her idea of time well-spent.

Irons sighed, sensing Aleni's displeasure, "It is beneith you, this I know. However, I want to be able to trust wolves that I do not know well. By making you watch over these new hunters, I will know them through you. I will trust them through you. I do not give these jobs as worthless tasks. I need to keep track of who belongs with us, and who doesn't. No matter what, I want to be able to trust my pack. And I trust you... and with Skule watching... that woman, I know I sleep better at night."

Of course, the fact that... that woman was now going to watch over their new priest was of no comfort to him. However, Loir seemed to be more trustworthy than the Shaman so far... but that all had yet to be seen really.

Aleni, though she knew things wouldn't turn out in her favor if she didn't do as her alpha said, was partially debating on not following this order. That was, at least, until Irons mentioned trusting her. It was a known fact that he only trusted the original Bones pack members, yes, but having him say it was like music to her ears. It certainly looked like she would have to give baby-sitting a new hunter a shot. Besides, the wolf still needed to find another hunter before she would be bogged down with playing mentor. Anything for trust, anything to prove that she was respectful the huntress supposed. Anything for Irons.

"I'm flattered." Albeit, she knew that the comment probably wasn't meant for her to take pride in the fact that she was seemingly liked a bit more than whoever 'that woman' was. Still, it was hard not to allow that grin to twitch at her lips. "Fine. But as you have already said, I'm certain that you will make the right choice, but I suppose any good alpha would still want to make sure." Pausing for a moment, nose and ears twitching, Aleni looked off toward the woods. "If I may ask, how exactly do you plan on finding an able hunter?"

"There is an... option I am playing with at the moment," Irons mentioned absently, still looking cross that he had even had to mention... that woman when she wasn't around to make herself known. His damn Shaman and he tricks. At least Aleni was loyal and trustworthy. At least Aleni would obey his orders and do what he said.

Of course, if Aleni annoyed him enough, he could simply kill her, whereas the Shaman was irriplacable... for now. Though if she continued to be useful, perhaps he would keep her. Even though killing her would be so, so, so much more satifying.

"This option... should I chose him is a bit off a... shall we say, loose cannon? However, he is quite good, I have seen him hunt and wish to keep him, should he accept fully. But even then... I want to take no chances. Like it or not, there are too few of us now to make stupid decisions. Let alone rash ones. Those I trust must watch anyone new we bring into the pack, lest they bring us down or hold us back. If this... possible new member proves to be anything of the kind, you have my authority to kill him. However, if he is good, then within a month or so you may go back to business as usual and leave him be."
