The day was hot... oppressively hot... and the sun hung high in the cloudless sky like the light in an oven. Kichanga wandered across the wide open roguelands, fully exposed to the sun amongst the dry grasses. He pushed himself along, panting hard, tongue hanging out the side of his mouth. He looked a bit silly this way, but at this point he didn't care. He needed to cool himself off--and he needed water. He needed to find a watering hole, a river, a stream, anything. Even a puddle would suffice.

But as of yet he'd found nothing. It was high summer, and all the water seemed to be dry. At one point he thought he'd seen water, but it turned out ultimately to be an illusion, a trick played on him by the sun's heat reflecting on the air. This had frustrated him greatly, but he kept on marching, because no matter how thirsty and desperate and tired he got, he knew he was going to find water sooner or later if he just kept moving. He was certain.

What a foolish mikstake... thought Kizuka'Mchopozi as she padded lazily through the grasses. She knew she should've stayed in the jungle another moon or so... And now she was paying the price for her foolishness. "It's so hot..." She moaned to herself. She reverted to panting, wishing her coat was a lighter shade.

It hadn't been long ago that she had decided to cool off in a water hole a little way away. Close enough that she remembered where it had been, but far enough away to have lost its scent. She'd dunked her entire self in, stolen a meal from a local hyena, and taken a quite nice feather from a puppy maned wolf. So far, it was turning out to be a good day, aside from the heat.

Her body was completely wet when she had completely gotten out of the pool, and now only her paws were wet. Muddy by now, but still with some water. And they were only as such because they'd stayed in her shadow.

But now something caught her eye. Something the same color as the dying grass all around her, only it was moving. She didn't quite know where to hide the feather that was in her mouth... She stuck it between her toes and headed for the creature. She got rather close, but feared to go any farther unnoticed. She now crouched in the tall grasses to see what the dog would do, squishing her toes together to secure the feather.
