___Hi everyone! There was a thread like this one in the guild before but it got deleted. I'm betting cuz there was no need for posts from members who got banned for being inactive, I don't know. Point is, it was fun and interesting to find out why Gaia members chose their user names. If you feel like sharing with the rest of the guild why you chose your own, then go ahead and post. There's no actual template of how a post should be but, please do post something more than just a line.
___I'd like to point out that if you do change yer user name often (no matter how often it may be), then feel free to post the old name as well as the new one and why you chose to change it. You can do this in either yer old post (the first one, if you posted one or more) or just post a new one. This can make people want to come back and post.
___Another thing I'd like to point out as well, is that this thread is for everyone; not just members who have medieval or fantasy like names. This way anyone can post without restrictions or fear of getting banned. If you do have a medieval/fantasy like name however, I've decided that if you keep the name for about a month or so, you can participate in a monthly drawing for a specific gold amount (more information on this on the post below).

Anyhoo, I'll go first and share with you all why I chose my user name:

When I first became online, it was only for e-mails and I only had one e-mail address (hypnotic_fs@hotmail.com). Even though this address has been deleted, I received a message one day about a community site called "Bolt" (www.bolt.com which is gone now too btw). After checking it out, I had to come up with a cool user name for it, and after a while of thinking about it, I decided to base it on something original; something that was never thought of before and that could identify me as a part of a community. But what!? After playing Final Fantasy 7 I saw that the names of accessories weren't used very much among other members and there was one that peeked my interest. It was the "HypnoCrown"! The description of the item said: "Increases manipulation rate" and since I've always liked to be able to control monsters in games then, why not? Years after bolt became stale and most of my friends had gone inactive for quite a while, one of them alerted me of a cool site that was starting out. I checked it out and decided to leave bolt for good after settling on that new site with this very same user name. Yes! As you may have already guessed that site was Gaia and the rest, as they say, is history. 3nodding

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. 1: Every month (as long as I get a chance to come), I'll check which members, if any, have posted about their user names. Also, they need to be active; with this, I'm not saying they have to be here everyday, I'm just saying that they should be as active as they can. If at least 3 members qualify, they shall be entered in the monthly drawing known as "The Fantasy User Name Lotto/Contest" (see rule 2). If only one or two members qualify there shall not be a monthly drawing for the lotto, or a contest at all. Please notice that in order to qualify, you must post about your user name here. Otherwise, how am I going to know you want in?

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. 2: As long as at least 3 members qualify, I'll make a new post with a list of the qualifying members. If they do not change their user names for the duration of the month, they shall be eligible for the prize. Prizes will vary from month to month by the way.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. 3: If a member on the list happens to change his/her user name before the drawing he/she shall be disqualified.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. 4: The winner shall be notified via PM in case said member hasn't noticed of his/her winning status by the time I come back. If you have not received yer prize, you are entitled to post here or PM a mod or the guild owner about it.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. 5: The name of the previous winners will be kept on record at the end of this post, which will help keep a better track of things as they may or may not be entered again on a contest; depending on the kind of prize they won. This will let other members get a better chance of winning.

Those above were the general rules. Certain monthly drawings had different rules added to those above. For now, I'm going to close the contest as the guild isn't as active as it should be. "The Catacombs" sub-forum for example, isn't getting enough posts and until it does, I'm not going to award anyone else.

This post shall be updated occasionally so check back as often as you can. Thank you!

DemonicNightshade

PostPosted: Fri Jun 22, 2007 11:10 am

I actually have used Deadly Nightshade as my un for most sites but this time around I chose DemonicNightshade. If you know your plants, deadly nightshade is in the belladonna family. This plant is a psychotropic plant that in minute doses can help with heart problems. Healing being my main study in witchcraft this fitted me just right. As to the Demonic instead of Deadly it's cause I can be a pure demon at time. It still gives me the DN initials so that's what I went for. smile

SirKirbance

PostPosted: Sun Jul 01, 2007 10:17 am

There is basically three parts to my name. First Kirbance is based on Kirby, my favorite video game character. There are two reasons for the Sir at the front. First is because a long time ago I made a Gaia account named Kirbance, but then after being inactive for a while I forgot the password. When I made my new account the name Kirbance was still taken so I had to do something a little different. More specifically my wife helped me come up with the Sir part because when I first created my new avatar he looked a little like Spark from the Record of Lodoss series (with long blue hair). I won't change my name, but I have toyed witht the idea of adding a space to make Sir Kirbance. Spaces were not allowed before and may not be again. I also won't change my hair color, even if I change the style. Blue hair is my avatar's trademark.

Just as a note: I eventually remembered the password to my old account and transformed it into the tongue-in-cheek female avatar mule account pwned by SirKirbance (that name is a long story in itself) which I basically don't use for anything other than sometimes having her complain about how neglected she is due to her mule status.

I have a few screennames that I like to use that are influenced by mythology, some of my favorites are:

Hel's Belle (Hel is the Norse goddess of death*; a belle is a pretty lady)

Sekhmett (also a death goddess, but more to do with the desert, war, and famine*)

Trowkin (Trows are a scottish myth, kinda a mix between elves and dwarves, in norse mythology they're called "dark elves" but the description sounds like dwarves*).

Isa, Nauthiz, etc. (These are Norse Runes, they're basically the Norse alphabet, but they can be used for divination since they were believed to have been found by Odin when he hung on the tree*).

...and many more. Many times when I make a new screenname I break out a different Myth book and find a name I like. I play World of Warcraft, and 9/10 of my characters are named after gods or goddesses from different ancient religions.

*If you're interested in any of these myths/gods in detail, I'll post more information about them in the mythology part of the guild.

Ok well....
Mine was made about four years ago when myself and Mel used to RP. My character was Arcadia (got the name form the game.) And the Dragoon part...well that's what she was, a Dragon Knight. And it's my Handle since then.

I do have Nightmare Wings aswell, but that normally other forums I use. Reason being I just love the name. It's kool.

Uh...
My name comes from two shakespeare plays, Hamlet and Macbeth

I got the nickname Ophelia a year ago because of my many moments of insanity (since Ophelia sort of goes insane and drowns herself near the end of Hamlet. Not that I would ever do anything like that.)

I used MacBeth simply because the name 'Ophelia' was already taken on Gaia. It was the first last name used in a Shakespeare play I could think of, other than Capulet or Montegue.

Miluifaer

PostPosted: Fri Jul 13, 2007 7:47 am

In Sindarin (one of Tolkien's elven languages), "milui" means "friendly" and "faer" means "spirit." I was just playing around with Sindarin words and liked the combination. So, now Miluifaer is always my username. ^_^

Well my username used to be Posiongurl, when I first joined, because it was something stupid like 2am I was stuck for a name and although it is the name of a song from a band I like H.I.M, also I used to have the nickname of posion.

Then when I was writing a story which I still am now. I combined the names Sada Mistuko, to make the counter part/love interest to my main character. She was brought up in a family of assassins/bounty hunters and the name in english translates roughly to "pure one" form the Sada and "Child of Light" from Mitsuko, I thought it was somewhat ironic because when we first meet her, she is working on a inn in one of the towns, where nearly everything is far frompure.

I wanted a name change and decided to change Posiongurl to Sada Mitsuko and that's what you have before you, the name to one of my characters.

I do have other usernames also, but they are often related to some kind of magical herbal thing due to my interest in and practise of wiccan/pagan. A resent one I use is LeBelleMorte which roughly translates to The Beautiful Dead in femine form.

My goodness! So many entries and I couldn't get back here to see them til now. I'll come back later to read them more carefully and if I have time for it, I'll see if any user names are fantasy related so we can start a lotto or something.

Mine is the result of 90 minutes of torture trying to come up with the perfect username. This username is used strictly for Gaia while all my other UNs are used pretty much everywhere. I was on behindthename.com trying to find something. I found the name Ladislava. I thought it was pretty, but then got the idea to turn it backwards to see if it would be better. It was.
Ladislava itself is the Czech and Slovac (feminine) form of Vladislav, which means to rule with glory.

Lasseg of Valinor

PostPosted: Wed Jul 25, 2007 11:19 am

My username is a tongue-in-cheek reference to a LotR fanfiction co-written by Cassia & Siobhan, called the Mellon Chronicles. (Can be easily found through Google--trust me, they rock!)

At one point in the story, elfling Legolas tries to tame a baby Mirkwood spider, and the spider repays his efforts by calling him "Wicked, wicked Leafie!"

In a later story, a now adult Legolas is captured by mercenaries and they want his name. Well, rather than give away his identity and be used against King Thranduil of Mirkwood, Legolas gives the first thing that pops into his head, 'Lasseg', which translates roughtly as 'Leafie'.

Of course, once Aragorn, Elladan and Elrohir find out about this, he never lives it down, but the whole thing was hysterical, and it just stuck with me, following me to the Elven-Runes forum, and then here.
