The woods just past the compound grew deep and dark very quickly. The foilage on the ground was tangled, and it seemed almost as if there were eyes in the shadows just beyond the light of the campfire...
Of course, part of that may have been due to Dacian telling the children ghost stories.
It was an Ames campout: any of the Souls who had wanted to come were there, and Dacian was the only supervision. Because he was the only mage willing to supervise; but he thought the children could help out, there. So there they were...a bunch of children, and Dacian, in the middle of the woods.
There were three large tents set up for everyone to sleep in, and a campfire was merrily crackling.
((Alright. The beginning starts with this - I just need everyone to do a post that they're here, yada yada. Then I'll post again. Posting order isn't as necessary to follow here, since that would make it drag really easily - so try to keep up, people heart ))

Gavin scrambled out of one of the tents after having hastily thrown down his belongings. This was going to be like one giant sleepover. Except outside! He'd only heard stories about this whole 'camping' business. Sleeping on the ground, bugs in the sleeping bag, raccoons stealing all the food. Sounded like fun! Plus, there was always...
"S'mores!" he called out, taking a seat by the fire pit, looking at Dacian hopefully. The mage had already told them awesome, scary stories--some of which would probably give him nightmares, but he wouldn't admit that. Maybe now he'd be even more awesome and give them the fabled delicacy of camping culture. "We make s'mores, right?"
You just can't pass up marshmellows and chocolate on graham crackers. Nuh uh. He shifted his butt on the log he was sitting on. Sure wasn't that comfortable. It was scratchy too.

It was a surprise that the little doll girl was there - Natalie had told her no many times. Nobody there would know how to understand her - and that left her mother, understandably, uneasy.
But Ophiera had kept up, drawing pictures of tents and campfires (she'd seen camping trips in cartoons), pointing to them and taping them all over the house. Michael had chipped in, and soon Natalie gave in.
Ophiera was dressed in what looked almost like a little red riding hood dress and capelet, her hair up in pigtails. And she was following Gavin around, no matter what he thought of the arrangement. She liked Gavin - his wings were fluffy! He was bigger now, but that was okay. He was still Gavin. So she sat down beside him, smiling widely at Dacian.
She didn't know what s'mores were, but they sounded fun. So she nodded along with Gavin's suggestion.

Inanna had been absolute thrilled when Ari had told her about a little camping trip. Despite her love of tea parties and dolls and pretty clothes, Ina loved the outdoors. It probably had something to do with her wolf blend. But when she was out in the fresh air she felt so free. The idea of sleeping among the trees and the fireflies was just too good to be true.
Ina twirled over to the fire, fingers clutching lightly at the skirt of her summer dress. Her tail just would not stop wagging as she took in the sweet scent of burning wood and pine needles. "We should fish too!" she suggested, all for the smores, but also thinking smoked fish would be delicious! She was a food lover, after all. She plopped down on Gavin's other side, her ears perking attentively.

Holden wasn't sure what to think about this whole thing. Sure the prospect of being outside at night and he did rather enjoy the outdoors. It was better than being at home too, at home it would be just another movie or something else that he and Tristan did every ordinary day. The problem was that extented amounts of time outdoors usually meant things getting dirty and Holden didn't like dirt much.
Holden sat away from the other children, he didn't know them all that well. He had met Gavin and Ina once sure, but he prefered where he was and sat in silence.

The little diabolo girl watched the other kids in silence. She had never met Dacian or Gavin or Inanna or anyone else for that matter, and although she had tried to let her father know that on the subject of this camping trip she was simply Not Interested, he would have none of it. Harve assured her that hanging out with these other children was perfectly safe, as if she had been somehow worried about that. Nope, no worries on that front.
Nadia sighed. At least the stories were good (what she could understand of them), and she could practice her words. Dog Girl, Wing Boy, Mask Kid, Red Face. No, Red Head. Bor-ing. Red... Skull. She grinned and grabbed handfuls of the long jean skirt she had been forced to wear. Harve had muttered something about washing it as he had helped her get dressed, but Nadia hadn't cared to hear much more than that. She hadn't washed a thing in her short life and she wasn't about to start now.
Everyone certainly seemed to be excited about these S'mores. Nadia bent over and grabbed her feet, partially to bring her head and ears closer to the conversation, but mostly because feet were fun.

Osha had wanted to go since he heard Gavin was going, and Ina was going to be there too. He was littler than them now, and that was weird. But he still wanted to play with them. Zack was nice, but Gavin and Ina were much better. They understood things like mommy-snatching aliens. He still needed to investigate that with Gavin...but not right now. This was a camping trip. Osha didn't exactly know what that entailed, and neither did Zack. Apparntly, Zack had grown up in a city. Honestly, what good were parents if they didn't know anything?
Osha took longer putting his things down in the tent (we won't mention Zack got him here a little late) than some of the others, so when he finally got outside, both seats beside Gavin were already taken by two girls and the conversation seemed to have something to do with S'mores. He didn't know the two other kids off by themselves, so he decided he'd sit next to Ina. "S'mores," he chirped happily, intrigued by the idea. If Zack wasn't making it, it was bound to taste good.

Ismet was also there, but he wasn't quite as happy as the other children mostly were. No, he was sitting on a log in front of the fire: sulking.
He hadn't wanted to come. But Dacian was rather persistant, and he'd eventually agreed just to get the man to stop bugging him.
Dacian, on the other hand, was quite happy. Taking some of the s'mores ingredients from Gavin, he began in the process of making them.
"Now, fishing should probably wait until tomorrow...the fish are all sleeping right now!"
Or, maybe not. But the fish one could catch at this time of night, wouldn't be through methods the kids could do. Not to mention that the fish you could catch from gigging were downright scary looking.
Grinning over at some of the more quiet kids, he gestured them over, "Come over and have some smores! They're pretty tasty..."

Had Gavin been a bit older, he would have realized the significance of being surrounded by girls. Instead, he merely looked around to assess who all was there. Of course there were Ina, Ophi, and Osha, his best friends in the whole entire world. Well, Haki was also included in that list, but she didn't seem to be here at all. Creepy Holden and Ismet were there too, but neither of them too excited. Then there was one other girl, a much younger one, who he'd never seen before.
At Dacian's suggestion of bonding over the wonder of s'mores, Gavin joined in the gesture. "Yeah, yeah! S'mores are very tasty!"
Then he pointed at the toddler he didn't know. She sure was bending funny. "What's your name? And why are you all bent like that?"

Ina paused to think over Dacian's explination, her tail sweeping slightly to the side. Finding that it checked out, she nodded. Even the fish needed sleep, she supposed. "Ok!" Her ears perked a little and she turned her head to look at some of the new-commers, so to speak. "Osha!" she smiled brightly as the boy sat next to her. She then blinked her gold eyes, which shone rather brightly in this sort of lighting, and looked around, "We need sticks for our marshmellows!" You couldn't make smores without roasting the marshmellows! She had seen it in a book once.

Nadia rocked back on her butt and kept her fingers wrapped around her feet as she watched Dacian attempt to coax her closer to the fire and the happy kids. She would have stayed still, simply staring, if Gavin hadn't addressed her nearly at the same time.
Her name? Harve had taught her the answer to that question, and she barked it at the other boy, at a much higher volume than she usually spoke in. "Nadiii!" She let her feet go and jammed green flowered flip flops on them before standing up, walking slowly to a closer log and plopping down on it. Once more, a flip flop came off and a tiny foot was in Nadia's hand. "S'fun," she explained in her normal near-whisper.

Osha wiggled where he sat, listening to Dacian happily. Dacian was one of those adults who knew very useful things, unlike his Zack, so it was very good to listen up. He looked at the girl Gavin was talking to. He didn't know her...or the boy with the dark face. Well, more like a mask, really. And Ismet didn't really look like he wanted to play...but he didn't look like he wanted to play.
"Sticks?" They needed sticks? He could go find sticks! He sat up, brushing his legs off. Huh. The woods looked awfully dark. He didn't exactly want to go by himself. Maybe someone wanted to come with him? Well, it was Ina's idea. He tugged on her sleeve. "Find sticks?" he asked. Ina wouldn't make him go alone.

Ophiera looked at the girl that Gavin was talking to. She hadn't seen her before! And she looked interesting - her hair was in pigtails, too! Intrigued by this pigtailed-new-girl, Ophiera stood up off Gavin's log and toddled over, sitting down next to her and waving, smiling widely.
Gavin had the purple girl next to him, so he wouldn't be lonely if she were gone for a few moments. She'd be back, too! But first, she wanted to say hi to the girl.

Holden sat for another moment before he got up and moved closer to the group of children, lonelyness and boredom being his primary motivator. He stood their, feeling a little akward, not knowing most of these people, he did something he didn't really want to do, he talked.
"I'm 'olden," he said, an attempt to introduce himself to those he didn't know. He was nervous about it though and spoke quietly, pulling at the hem of his shirt. He really didn't like talking.

"Hey," Nadia said to the exuberant doll-girl she suddenly found sharing her log. She opened and closed her hand in a return wave, continuing this motion as she smiled slightly and reached out to touch Ophiera's short cape. "Nice," she declared.
Nadia's hand swung around to wave at Holden a moment before she took her attention away from Ophiera's clothing and looked at the boy. "Hi Ol'n," she said, her hand ceasing its movement. Nadia spared a scowl for the fire. She had spent most of her four weeks of life eating, sleeping, coloring or watching her father play video games, and although she could hum the Super Mario Bros theme, the complexities of proper pronunciation still eluded her. "Old'n," she corrected, nodding for emphasis.
