Her mate had left her, and only after their pack had seemed to completely break down and fail. Afterwards, she had gotten a new parasite in the form of a real-life wolf. Great. So, as things were, it was a little obvious as to why Kalia was rampaging around the lands, fur bristling constantly and eyes ablaze with fury.

And now, she was on a mission. She was going to retrieve all of her offspring and either earn their trust back or, if that didn't work out, she'd simply drag them back with her and hold them on den arrest. Whichever she needed to do, she was perfectly willing. Her life was crumbling beneath her and she wanted nothing more than to construct some sort of stable item within her pitiful existance.

So that was why she found herself at the edges of the packlands belonging to the alpha male Phib. She was standing on the outside looking in, eyes narrowed slightly. She had received some information that her runt daughter was within the Outriders' packlands. But she was pondering just how to infiltrate it. She didn't want to just barge in and be mistaken for some wolf looking to conquer, yet there was no one around and she was running out of patience.

The silver female paced back and forth for a few minutes. Not only had she received information that Echo was within the Outriders, she had also heard that she was living with her mate and that she had a daughter. Which made Kal a grandmother. A grandmother! Hah. Wasn't she old. Merely thinking about the fact that she had a granddaughter made her bones ache.

Growling in frustration with both her situation and her thoughts, the former alpha paced back and forth again. She had to make a decision quickly before she completely lost it.

Logan had been patrolling the borders today, his stomach was full, and he had left several fish outside the den for Echo and Ophelia is they got hungry as well. Echo, even thinking her name made him feel warm and perfect. A smile was on his maw, curled tail high and swaying behind him with each step as he weaved a path through the border trees, eyes alert ready to approach an outsider if need be.

Sometimes he wished Croanyl would return, so he could slash, bite, torture, then kill the crazed wolf.

But he never showed, and for that he was glad, Echo, his family, everyone would be safe.

Though something gray caught his eyes today, he stomped, froze for a minute, then pressed forward, no, this gray was lighter, and was a female. Huge difference. "Morning," he said approaching ehr even still, then stopped a yard or so away.

The female didn't look too friendly.

Kalia was about to decide that she should simply barge into the packlands and demand to see her daughter when suddenly a voice sounded behind her. She whirled automatically, eyes blazing with anger, to face the one that dared interrupt her. She was ready to tear him apart, her nerves were that frazzled from everything.

Yet then she came to her senses and realized that perhaps this wolf belonged to Phib's pack. So she straightened herself up and fixed her expression, although it was still obvious that she was in a bad mood.

"Mornin'," she said between clenched teeth, despite her efforts to remain civilized. "Do you belong to this pack?" she asked, hoping to calm her nerves by getting straight to the point. She was like this because her patience was running thin, so perhaps if she got things done quicker she would settle down. She doubted it, deep down, but it was worth a try.

So she stood there, tail held high slightly out of habit from when she was still an alpha. Soon enough, she'd be alpha again. She just needed her children.

Logan kept his tail swaying, even though this female was in a bad mood, he had to show some respect. Her tail was high, a sign of an alpha, or a past one if she was alone now. But he shouldn't assume so much, he was only patrolling, he was hoped that her business here was not that of something like Croanyl's had been. "Yes I am," he said with a nod. Eyes watching her.

Something about her seemed...very familiar.

But what was it?

"Can I help you in some way miss-?" eh said stopping, not knowing her name. Should he have introduced himself already? He wasn't sure, he didn't want to give his name out to a stranger that might cause trouble for him later on.

The fiery female eyed him suspiciously. Her nose was twitching, taking in his scent, and there was something familiar within it. But she was unable to place it immediately, so with her short fuse she simply dropped it. Instead she focused on the way he was polite to her despite her angry mood. Smart boy.

When he asked her what he could do for her, she huffed and glanced around slightly, turning her head all the way as she was blind in one eye.

"Yes, you can take me to my daughter. I've heard that she resides within these packlands, and I have some business I wish to speak with her about." Speak, and then drag her back to her mother's packlands, was all. Echo belonged at home, not off some place with her sister and some male who got her knocked up.

Thinging about what a male had done to her daughter, she growled softly to herself, eyes losing focus. But then she remembered that she wasn't alone anymore, and she attempted to straighten herself out.

"Her name is Echo. Do you know her?" she asked, eyes narrowed.

Daughter? Logan flicked an ear, kept an eye on the gray female, gray with..darker gray spots. Spot...something clicked right as the female said Echo's name. Her mother? Logan remembered in great detail how Echo felt about her mother coming later on, though Logan didn't know it would be so soon! What should he do, run away, go find her now? No, she'd give chase, then they would have a problem.

Though he'd stick by Echo, Echo and Ophelia, if this female was their mother, Logan wasn't letting her take them anywhere, or law a paw on them, either of them.

They were his family now.

"Yes I do, I know her quite well," he didn't want to say somehting wrong and foolish right away, not that loving Echo was foolish. He just didn't want any problems, especially near the borders. Logan turned, stopped, peered over his shoulder, "This way," with that he said nothing more, and just started to walk slowly.

Something flicked across the male's face. Recognition? But she had never met him before, that she was sure of. She was old, but not old enough to go forgetting wolves she'd met. And then he spoke that he knew her daughter quite well.

Now, Kalia wasn't stupid. The gears in her mind began to turn as she put all of the little details together. Logan having a flicker of recognition then saying that he knew her daughter quite well, there was only on explanation for it. He was Echo's mate, and Echo had spoken to him about her mother. How she'd spoken with her curse was a mystery, but she had relayed the information about her mother nonetheless. Or perhaps Ophelia had talked about Kal. Traitorous daughters.

"Very good," she spoke, keeping her revelation to herself. She'd chew him out later. For now, she only wanted to find her daughter and bring her back home. The male could wait.

So the gray female simply lifted her head proudly and followed after the male. He'd take her straight to her daughter, and then things would begin to unfold.

Logan kept quite for a while, contemplating bolting off to whisk Echo away to another part of the packlands, and then throw her mother on the wrong trail. What did she want anyway? "If you don't mind my asking, what's your business with Echo? Came o just see her, talk it up, or is there more to it?" he asked, still not stopping, not stopping to turn around, face her.

Internally he was afraid of what she might say.

He wondered if she knew already.

What should he do, what should he do? His elongated fangs gleamed in the sun's rays that passed through the canopy of pine branches above. What should he do,w hat could he do?

Kalia wondered at the male's silence. Surely he had learned of her somehow? She may have been a bit arrogant at times, but now it was simple logic as she thought that he couldn't have gone on knowing Echo for so long without learning of her mother. Did that mean he knew what she had done to her daughter as well?

The gray female stiffened, but never lost a step as she followed him. He was... what was the word? Protective? Defensive? Whatever it was, he was too much of it and it was all too obvious to the former alpha.

When he asked why she was seeking out Echo, Kal narrowed her eyes and almost growled. "Can't a mother see her daughter without being questioned?" she said, perhaps a bit too defensively. "I want to see my daughter, that is as much as you need to know," she stated firmly, eyes stern if he was to look back. She didn't like how nosy he was.

As he became silent again, she knew that he was on to her. He knew, and he was thinking of something. Just what she was thinking about, the older female wasn't sure. But she'd figure it out.

Meanwhile, at the den, Echo scurried back and forth nervously, five feet in each direction. Her mother was coming soon, but when?! It was killing her, all of this suspense of not knowing just when her mother would pop back into her life. And when she came back, then what? What would the runt say to her? How would she act?

The female nearly had a heart attack simply thinking about it. Her mother was so terrifying. And every time she thought of her mother, her scars burned up a storm. She could only imagine what would happen when her mother was actually in front of her, alive and in the flesh.

It was killing her!

Logan stayed silent then. What would he do, what would he do? Should he lead her in the wrong direction? His heart was beating so fast, he felt like he was getting a fever, he was worrying, freaking out over the possibility that Echo's mother would take her away. Her and Ophelia, Ophelia was a friend to Echo, and he would protect her too. But what would he do if they were gone, what would he do?

Internally he was getting frantic, he wanted to stop, tell her mother to go home, never come back, that Echo was happier here, with him, Ophelia too. He just didn't want to live without either of them...he couldn't bring himself to even contemplate such a thing.

As he drew closer, he refused to say a word to her, as he stepped by the den, he saw Echo, she seemed nervous, and was pacing. Logan padded over to her and gave her a gentle nuzzle of his cheek against hers. Then he stood in front of her, him between her and the brush, "She's here..." he said quietly, lowly, only loud enough for Echo to hear.

He'd protect her...

No one was going to take her from him...no one.

Logan was remaining quiet. Not a good thing, for him. It bothered his mother-in-law and she found herself becoming more and more angry with him. He was withholding information and not responding to anything she spoke of. He was protective of Echo, that much was for certain. It was all the more reason Kalia had for thinking that he was indeed Echo's mate.

"Well then," she grumbled, eyes narrowing at Logan. He was heading down a dangerous path, acting silent like that. She was about to explore some of her thoughts further, but it was then that they came upon the den where Echo was nervously pacing about. As the two wolves entered the densite, Echo lifted her head and peered at them warily. She accepted Logan's nuzzle but didn't take her eyes from her mother.

Kal shifted, wanting to tear at Logan for touching her daughter. But she couldn't here, not now in front of her daughter. And speaking of which...

Humph. Didn't seem to Kal that her daughter had changed all that much. She was still shakey and terrified of everything. Pathetic. But beyond those hating thoughts, the mother within her frowned. This was her daughter and she was frightened, and her instincts told her to comfort the poor runt.

Immediately her posture relaxed and the anger left her eyes. Her tail drooped and all of a sudden she didn't seem so frightening.

"Echo..." she whispered. The runt shook her head and whimpered, shrinking back against her mate. Her mother flinched backwards, looking away for a moment.

"Echo... I'm sorry. I just... can we talk?"

The runt looked to her mate, as if asking his advice.

Logan watched Kalia, saw how Echo seemed so scared of her own mother, it made his blood boil. No, he would not let her mother law one paw on her, not one, true, she was his mother-in-law, the closest thing he would ever have to a mother really, but if she ever threatened Echo, ever tried to harm her, he would stand in between them, he would take the pain and spare his mate.

He loved Echo, he would protect her no matter what.

His eyes feel into Echo's as she peered at him, silently asking what to do, her mother asked to talk, Logan was wary of the idea. "If you want to you can, yes," he said silently, calmly in a whisper, "I can stay if you want, or I can go," he was trying to give Echo as many words as he could so she could respond back.

If she told him to go, he would, though he'd be close by, he would make sure she was safe.

Kalia didn't even so much as glance at her son-in-law as she stood in front of her daughter. She had been angry before, but now she felt humbled. She felt as if she were on trial for some terrible crime, and Echo was the one to decide whether she was innocent or guilty. It was a sickening feeling, but she stomached it and stood stock still.

Echo frowned, looking from her mother to her mate. She wanted to see what her mother wanted, but she was unsure of whether to have Logan go away to allow her privacy. What if her mother tried something?

She looked towards her mother again, into her eyes. Or, really, into only one of her eyes, since her right one was blank and blind. Kal's eyes were deep and seemed full of sadness, though whether that sadness was real or feigned she was having trouble figuring out.

Turning back towards the male, she took in a deep breath. "You go," she whispered quietly, her body shaking slightly. Could she really handle her mother on her own?

Kalia lifted her head and looked towards Logan, her look having not changed. Would he trust her enough to leave Echo alone with her? Only time could tell.

Logan kept quiet, kept still, just let his eyes fall back and forth between Echo and Kalia, once of twice his tail swayed slowly, his heart was beating low, steady and loud all at once. When Echo began to speak, his ears flickered and he set his eyes upon his, Echo's words reached his ears, registered in his mind, though he wished deep down the words had been different from what they were.

He offered her a smile, as if not to worry, stood an began padding away from the den clearing, padding forward towards Kalia, passing her on the right, stopping for a mere second, "If you hurt her...I will not hesitate..." he spoke low, so that Echo could not hear, he wasn't sure how Echo would take him talking to her mother in such a manner.

With that he moved on, into the underbrush, a few meters away, he turned, stopped, sat, keeping his ears alert.

If Kalia did anything to hurt her...he would keep to his words, he would not hesitate.

Echo trembled as her mate left her side to leave them to their privacy as she had asked him to. She felt that her mother deserved some alone time with her, despite what she had done, but she was unsure of whether she was actually ready for that alone time to happen at the moment. But it was too late now. Logan was leaving and her mother looked about ready to start.

Kalia had trembled as well, but not because she was scared as Echo was or because Logan's 'threat' had gotten to her. She was wondering whether this was a good idea or not. She was never good at keeping her temper, and Echo's curse would surely irritate her.

But she kept her cool. She took a side glance at the male as he passed by, threatening her quietly. She took no heed. She wasn't afraid of him. She had battled and lost an eye, but she had won that battle nonetheless. If she could handle what she had before, then she could certainly handle a bit of a protective mate.

Once they were alone, the gray female looked long and hard at her daughter. She really took in her appearance this time instead of simply letting her eyes wander over her body. She took in the scars, scars that had come from her own claws. How could she have done such a thing to her daughter? She had become just like her former mate: angry and abusive. Never had she thought she would stoop to his level. But here she was, standing and looking straight at her scarred daughter. She could only be thankful that she hadn't done any further damage.

Echo stood there, still trembling. Why wasn't her mother saying anything? If she had come to talk, then why wasn't she talking already? The suspense was dreadful.

"Echo," her mother began. "I'm so... I'm so sorry. Just looking at you here, it pulls at my heart, it truly does." She looked back over her shoulder, over to where Logan was supposedly waiting. "Is that your mate?" She shook her head. "Who am I kidding, of course that is. I can just tell by the way you refer to him and by the way he acts so protectively towards you. It's good that you've found someone for yourself. And I hear you have a daughter, too." This last made Echo flinch. Kal frowned. "No, don't be afraid. Oh, what have I done?" She sighed. "I'm happy for you, Echo, I really am."

The runt simply stood there, a bit shocked. She hadn't expected her mother to apologize. That was the last thing that she was expecting from her. She was expecting other things. Perhaps Kalia had wanted to take her away or to hurt her again, but here she was apologizing. It was almost surreal.

"I'm happy," the younger female spoke quietly, nodding her head ever so slightly. Her mother nodded in return.

"Yes, I can see that. You've really made a life for yourself out here." She stopped to look all around her, as if just her immediate surroundings were the very home that her daughter had claimed as her own. And perhaps they were. This was her densite. Had her granddaughter been birthed here? It was a chilling thought, but in the best way possible.

"I really am happy, and I just wanted to say I'm sorry for... for what I did to you," she spoke, her one functioning eye beginning to water. Echo could tell that her mother was either acting really well or she quite meant what she was saying. She was naive and so went for the latter.

"And I just came here... well, originally I came to take you back with me. But once I got here everything seemed to change. I don't know, I saw you there with that male and I just knew that you had finally found a place for yourself here. Anyways, I just wanted to know if everything was okay between us, and I wanted to ask if you wanted to come back with me, only ask. It's okay if you want to stay."

The older female stopped there, feeling as if she gave ample words for her daughter to use with her own constructing of sentences. And they were plenty enough, indeed.

Echo took in a breath and look straight at her mother, straightening slightly in her posture. "Everything okay between us," she spoke, smiling slightly. "And want to stay," she said, quite uneasily. She wasn't sure if her mother really was asking or if it was simply a test to see if she was loyal to her mother or not. If it was a test, she was surely doomed. But her mother only smiled, though she looked hurt, and nodded her head.

"Yes, I would have suspected that. Then I'll just... leave..."
