The way that Trevalyn and Memory had met their father was not pleasant. No foal should ever have to see their parent in such a light and Jean-Claude should have been ashamed of himself... Should have been, but he wasn't all that certain that the stallion was. No, he had viewed himself as being in the right. There was another stallion guarding his family...

Under any other circumstances he may have shared the other stallion's feelings. To see someone else raising his foals, should he ever have them? Of course, foals were never meant to be raised by just one or two. No, foals were meant to be raised by a herd; learning something from everyone.

He stood outside the cave that they had returned to; the place where Nostalgia had birthed three foals and where they had raised two of them. The afternoon had gone from bright and happy to quiet. He wasn't used to the silence in the cave. It wasn't meant to be this quiet.

Keeping low to the ground, Trevalyn peered around the concealing brush to look over at where Draven was standing. Seeing the older stallion standing so still made the colt grin; maybe THIS time he'd actually be successful. Slithering through the shrubs with (to his imagination) complete silence, he crept towards Draven, ready to pounce, ready to pounce...

He was SO able to be sneaky and stealthy, just like a good protector needed!

His ears flickered towards the sound of... Small hooves, was it? A slight smile curved the corners of his mouth as he waited, continuing to listen. The sound wasn't nearly as loud as it usually was... That was good. It meant that Trevalyn was learning something from his little 'lessons'.

He waited patiently for the foal to 'suprise him', figuring it wouldn't hurt to let the young one have the upper hand just this once. After what they had gone through earlier, both Memory and Trevalyn deserved something to smile about. He wasn't about to be the one to make either of them frown.

Wriggling stealthily through the underbrush, Trevalyn grinned toothily as he noted the relative immobility of Draven. Draven was the smartest, bestest herd protector Trev knew, so if he could sneak up on Draven, then that was GOOD. And since Draven wasn't moving, that had to mean he himself was being good and sneaky, right?

Of COURSE right! And why not, when he'd been learning from Draven fow his whole life??

That in mind, the smile on his face wasmore than suited to the occassion. As he moved into range, he stepped even more carefully, trying to get as close as possible...

Before flinging himself out of hiding at Draven. "RAWR, I GOTCHA!!!"

Trevalyn was getting better and he would give him credit for that where it was due... But he wasn't that good yet and if he wanted to play he'd play. He had learned, afterall, that there were moments for being serious and moments for letting his guard down. The time for seriousness had passed for now.

He waited... And waited... Listening to the sounds of the brush rustling. He turned at the last minute, lowering his head until it was almost level with where the foal's would be if he'd guessed right at which direction he was coming from. "Boo."

...SO NOT FAIR!

Even though he was intently watching Draven, the older stallion moved so fast that Trev was taken completely off guard by Draven's 'Boo'. With a crash of brush, the foal jumped involuntarily, then flopped his way out towards Draven, his face crossed by a toothy scowl.

"Draaavennn...you're not supposed to DO that!" Looking suitably aggreived, he gave Draven what he hoped was a suitably stern look. "Either you ARE surprised, or you're NOT." That was just the way things WERE!

He laughed, giving his head a light toss before leaning down to nudge the colt gently. "Oh, but I was suprised. You were much more quiet this time than you were the last time you tried sneaking up on me. I wouldn't have known you were there at all if it hadn't been for that sneaky bush giving you away." He grinned as he straightened himself out. "It rustled when you moved... Next time avoid the bush and you just might get me."

..."Really? That's so awesome!"

Gone were the rainclouds, and the sun was back as Trev's mullish expression was replaced by a bright grin. So he was getting better, eh? That was great! Stupid bush, giving him away like that...but otherwise things were great!

But wait. Glancing from Draven to the shrub in question, Trev started frowning again. "But if I wasn't in the shrubs, you would have SEEN me, Draven! I'm too brown to blend in out here like this!"

"The secret to staying 'hidden' is not in sight. It's in the wind." He nodded slowly. "The wind can carry voices and sound just as easily as it carries scent. Afterall, look at the color of my coat. I couldn't exactly hide myself in plain sight, could I?"
PostPosted: Tue Jun 19, 2007 7:19 pm

Wrinkling his nose, Trev answered Draven's statement with a snort. The two were hardly similar, as he saw it; sure, Draven wasn't brown, but he was BLACK, and black blended in a lot better.

"Well, black blends in with DARK, Draven, so you can hide if it's night, or in the trees, or a LOT of things. You're not too dark or too light or whatever to hide. And how come you notice the wind and I don't, huh Draven? Do you have to learn THAT too?"

Everything was so complicated!

"Brown blends in with trees far better than black does." He nodded slowly as he looked to the colt seriously for a moment before laughing. "Night is one of the few things that I can hide in... And even then I still stand out. We all have our strengths and our weaknesses." The paint-like coloration of his face stood out like a pale ghost in the night. That was something that he had learned to live with and use to his advantage at certain times.

"What brings you out, Trev?"
PostPosted: Tue Jun 19, 2007 7:45 pm

"Yeah, if there were any trees the right KIND of brown!" Trev could tell now that Draven was just playing with him, so he gave up trying to rationalize anything. After all, you couldn't teach if your student wasn't willing to LEARN!

Tossing his head, the colt pranced around the older stallion with the high-stepping energy of youth. "I dunno, I guess I just wanted to DO something Draven, you know? I wanted to DO something...good. Are you busy?" Random evasion, meet random addressing.

"Busy?" His brow lofted slightly. "Not unless you call thinking busy... Of course, I've heard that if you think too much it makes you look far older than you are and if I'm going to keep up with you and your sister we can't have that, can we? What did you have in mind, Trev?"
PostPosted: Wed Jun 20, 2007 7:35 pm

NOW Draven was being silly, and Trev responded to that in the time-honored manner of sticking out his tongue. Honestly, you ask a serious question and you get a joke. "You're NEVER truly serious, are you Draven? I'm talkin' to you SERIOUSLY, you know."

Not that he himself was much better at being serious in these circumstances. Draven looked so funny when he was acting like this! "I dunno, really...I just wanna do SOMETHING. Like..." Hrm, like what? "Something USEFUL."

"I was being serious, Trev." He nodded slowly. "I was thinking but my thoughts can easily be interrupted for something. Something is far more important than nothing, afterall." Others always came first as far as he was concerned... That was how it had always been and, for him, it was the way it would always be.

"Hm... Something useful... Have you scouted the area yet? Or did you have something more important in mind?"
