There was nothing fancy about this. Two men go into the pit, and possibly only one man may come out. This was the kind of fight you'd only see in the underground; no holds bars, anything goes, and there can only be one winner. Tiem Jay vs Yariel

Yariel stands on one side of the pit, the mask on his face hiding all expression, while the hood on his head hid the remaining part of his head. His right hand held his halberd behind him, his right hand pressed against his waist area with the weapon itself tilted diagonally, the bladed part near the ground left of his footing. His stance was stern.

Tiem, on the other hand, was not in any sort of stance.
In stark contrast to the shrouded warrior standing in front of him, he was little more than some punk kid that got his jollies from street fights and candy. Especially the candy.
Sleeves rolled up to his elbows, collar flipped up against the back of his neck, and hair uncombed, Tiem Jay was-
"Oshitson, that's BAD a**!"
-staring at Yariel's halberd like an inner-city youth gawking at a SWAT van parked outside a building. Sometimes kids just wish they had the other person's toy.
Alas, Tiem hadn't brought something so heavy and bladed as a halberd. His own weapon pressed flatly against the back of his neck with one hand resting on either side leisurely. A stick, or more accurately a wooden sword for practice matches, was resting across his shoulders casually.
"So laike... guy. How you wanna do this thing?" The kid's right hand slipped from the weapon so he could scratch the end of his nose.

Yariel did not return a verbal response. Instead, he twirls his weapon around, setting it in front of himself, his right foot sliding forward to sit more on his left bending leg. Holding the polearm by both hands, the right near his body while the left hand was down the rod itself, pointing toward the blade, he froze in stance.
A second later, he rushes his opponent, his upper body never changing, while his legs were moving from him running at Tiem. He was aiming to perform the simple impale manuever, a stab for Tiem's gut from three feet away. With the length of his halberd, it should be no problem to slow his movement here and bring forward the weapon.

"Naw, gai..." the kid scratched his nose as Yariel lowered his stance more; choking up on the halberd shaft slightly, holding the head low, keeping his weight on the back foot, all characteristic of a thrust.
ADD has a funny way of messing with perception. Everything tunes out except the one thing that's really interesting. That bright and shiny weapon of Yariel's was certainly eye-catching, and it was hard for Tiem to take his eyes off of it because of that. Even as the weapon head rushed past his side, the boy's own head turned to follow the gleaming metal.
A simple sidestep is enough to avoid a direct thrust, but timing is everything. Too early and the attacker is able to alter the course of his strike. Too late and timing isn't the most important thing on your mind anymore. For Tiem the moment came when the weapon head was brought up from the lowered position, which would have segued immediately into the thrust motion in order to preserve the momentum and increase the speed of the strike. It was a simple sidestep... with his right. Leaning to his left he took a step to the side with his right; turning to the side to reduce his profile as the halberd head rushed past through the space he had just occupied.
His arm was already raised, resting on his shoulder like that. All it took was to bring his elbow down and snap out the wooden sword from behind his head. The backstepping right foot would hit the ground a moment before the time the blow should have connected, ensuring firm footing for a powerful slam with the middle of the toy sword across Yariel's right collarbone. He had also preserved his momentum and increased the speed of the strike; by turning his upper body while avoiding Yariel's initial thrust he was able to put more force into his own opener, and unless the lancer had only half-heartedly committed to his attack, he wouldn't be able to practice any fancy footwork to get out of this one.
"...don' have to be a p***k about it, kay?"
A halberd is a lot like a spear, and a lot unlike it. It is both made for thrusts and sweeps, but it does not excel in either over weapons better suited for that task. The heavy blade affixed to the end of the shaft ensures that thrusts made with a halberd will take longer to recover from than thrusts with a spear, but the heavy blade also makes wide swipes with the polearm more dangerous than it's spear counterpart. It was for this reason that, success or fail, Tiem's next step was towards Yariel.

There was a reason why he slowed at three feet away. He wasn't intending for a fierce stab, just a quick one, for about just a foot or a little less would be coming at Tiem from this distance, primarily mostly the blade and its tip. He was hoping to knab Tiem in the gut, but it looked like he avoided it.
But then he had nothing to worry about when that wooden sword swings down. An assumption would be made that the wooden sword wasn't exceeding three feet, or equaling, so at that moment of time, the sword would only swing at air, and Tiem was to the right. Yariel's left foot would step so he could shift in direction in more of a way to keep a direct facing to Tiem, since he was still slowing down to a stop, but this left hand pushes to the right also.
Why? Because it was redirecting his lance that missed to his right as it follows in that shift, aimed right for the back of Tiem, since it was what faced the weapon as the wooden sword had swung. Yariel did not have to do anything but swing his lance to the right, so the blade can swing to catch Tiem across his lower right back. He was aiming to cleave a good scar through, so by the time his blade left past the body, a deep bloody cut would left. If timing was important, Yariel did not have to worry about any second from his counter. Just a push of his left hand with the motion of his body was all it took.

(( I hate to split in quotes, because it always sounds condescending when it does, but... needs to be done. )) Cdore But then he had nothing to worry about when that wooden sword swings down. An assumption would be made that the wooden sword wasn't exceeding three feet, or equaling, so at that moment of time At that moment in time it appeared as if Yariel would be unprepared to receive an attack. The weapon, in itself, was slightly over three feet in length; thirty eight inches to be exact. The first eight inches were designated to handle space (and thus, his grip was about seven inches up upon it) and the other thirty were intended to be a proxy of a weapon blade, albeit made for a practice copy. Not quite three feet of distance in that, no... but with the casual extension of his arm being roughly two feet in its own right, that left nearly five feet of range for the weapon to hit with. Cdore Yariel's left foot would step so he could shift in direction in more of a way to keep a direct facing to Tiem, since he was still slowing down to a stop, but this left hand pushes to the right also. Why? Because it was redirecting his lance that missed to his right as it follows in that shift, aimed right for the back of Tiem, since it was what faced the weapon as the wooden sword had swung. As promised, Tiem was not going to stand within striking distance of a spear like that twiddling his thumbs. The moment his counterswing was complete, the boy would step in against the opponent in order to neutralize his weapon. With a spear, the most dangerous part of the weapon is the tip. It has the advantage of reach and speed over many other types of weapon, but it also carries the disadvantage that it cannot be used effectively in close combat. As Yariel was still taking a step forwards in order to turn, and Tiem was taking a step forwards in order to close the distance, that three feet between them would be gone in the bat of an eye. The spear head was dangerous while he was within its reach, though, so even though he was focused on delivering his own attack the boy was not about to ignore the largest threat that had presented itself. With the weapon in his left, his right hand was still free in front of himself, and he would use it to keep that spear at a distance. All he had to do was drop his arm near his side and use the forearm to keep the spear shaft at a distance. Even if Yariel turned the weapon, if the head was kept distanced from his body it couldn't hurt Tiem. By the time their steps were complete, it would be several feet to their sides and well out of harm's way. Cdore If timing was important, Yariel did not have to worry about any second from his counter. Just a push of his left hand with the motion of his body was all it took. Keeping both hands on that weapon, about waist level, was what left Yariel open to a close encounter of the painful kind. Once the spear was suitably incapacitated between the close bodies of the two fighters, Tiem's right arm would no longer be necessary to keep the weapon at bay. Instead it would shoot upwards along Yariel's midsection to grab a fistful of clothing at mid-torso and twist tightly into it; to make sure that sweaty palms wouldn't let the enemy get away when he was already so close. What would happen next depended entirely on how squarely the boy's first blow had struck Yariel. If it had, then the boy's left would swing in; his fist clenched tightly around the hilt of his wooden sword but not striking with the weapon at all. It was a punch intended to deliver a heavy blow to Yariel's right collarbone, the same place he had attacked earlier. The combination of two hard hits to a single point on that bone would virtually guarantee a fracture; and with his hands at waist level and his upper body pinned, there wasn't much room to wriggle out of this one. If it hadn't, then instead the blow would be aimed higher, with more of a rising motion, aimed to crack the butt of the wood hilt across Yariel's jaw.

((Making the appropriate post in regards to not knowing the length of the wooden sword earlier.))
Since the wooden sword was that long, Yariel reactively would do something instead of stand there. Even though he was stabbing, Tiem still was making that dodge, so firstly Yariel's momentum would slow with his running speed, allowing for a good amount of recovery time. That meant that when the wooden sword was bashing down, Yariel's step to the left was timed enough with the reflex to try to have the blade follow after, resulting in the wooden sword missing as Yariel's right side turns with his staff, the weapon missing the shoulder by an inch or so. Because regardless of the little time Tiem had to bring his weapon down from his shoulder, it still was seen, and fortunately the conditions were met enough for the half elf to avoid it while performing a counter.
Though Tiem stepped forward, Yariel did not step toward him. His step was more away, because even he knew that if he wanted to use his lance to deliver fatal blows with the blade, he was going to have to keep some distance between them until it was time to move into closer quarters. So that three feet may take some closure, but Yariel just had to strafe to his left around Tiem's location, while adding some more feet with steps back, and about two feet would be gained instead of lost, losing that proximity Tiem had wanted. This in turned would have Yariel pull back his weapon from the short stab, re-instating its position close to his body, but the tip still pointing forward, just not directly since it would also be angled upwards with his left hand raising a bit in altitude.
Now that grab for Yariel's clothing wasn't going to happen, but something else was about to. Yariel slides his left foot forward, brings his right foot in following to only place four foot between them in this time of movement, and stabs forward again, his stance similar to the one he posed at the start of the match before he began his charge. In relative to the strafe he did, Yariel should be a little direct to the right of Tiem, so his stab was going to go for the right abdominal. Since about a foot would be closed by his feet sliding alone, that left four feet left. But since about a foot of the lance would be within the right hand of Yariel's, then that left three feet and eight inches that went forward to cross the four feet distance. But if Tiem continued to follow him, the retreat like movement Yariel pulls off can leave Tiem with no room to dodge since his movement would be toward the elf, who would in turn already be counter attacking.
The length of Yariel's arms were slightly longer since he was half elf. The normal human had the tips of his finger coming to mid thigh. But this half elf's fingers came to his knees. That meant that if he extended both arms out to his sides, the wingspan would be greater than the height of the body. So as a result, Yariel will have five inches of the blade stabbed toward this area of Tiem's body. The reason why he would not extend it further was only because he wasn't going to extend his arms like Tiem did just now in trying to strike his collarbone. With the advantage of his arms keeping bent, he didn't have to waste much or anytime in performing other manuevers from this stab, and could still keep some good power in it. But when it struck, he was aiming to pull it back, even if it missed, to show he was not trying to stab and just thrust it even further. He was attempting to just create a good wound that would be fatal enough to cause his opponent to start bleeding, if it hit of course.

Reacting reflexively to the shifting momentum of his opponent's body, the boy unleashed a galactic wave of superawesome that washed over the entire area, killing millions in a spectacular display of psychedelic colors.Tiem's actions did not change as a result of this, because it happened two posts back and that would be retconning (read as: douchebaggery), which is bad. Cdore Though Tiem stepped forward, Yariel did not step toward him. His step was more away, because even he knew that if he wanted to use his lance to deliver fatal blows with the blade, he was going to have to keep some distance between them until it was time to move into closer quarters. But since about a foot of the lance would be within the right hand of Yariel's, then that left three feet and eight inches that went forward to cross the four feet distance.Yariel hadn't intended to close in, but that was why this was called a disadvantageous position: he wasn't here because it was going to benefit him. In his initial charge, Yariel had sped, slowed, sidestepped, slowed again, strafed, and now he was intent on backstepping. In response to the initial charge, Tiem had slid his right foot back, stepped forwards on his left, and was within spitting distance of Yariel's robed form. The elf went right, the boy went left, and they met in the middle... and now that they were here there was a popsicle's chance in hell that he was just going to let the ground he had gained slip away like that. Cdore But if Tiem continued to follow him, the retreat like movement Yariel pulls off can leave Tiem with no room to dodge since his movement would be toward the elf, who would in turn already be counter attacking. Tiem did continue to follow; never once turning away from the enemy and taking a step forwards for every step that the elf took back. The spear was about as dangerous as a hockey stick at this distance, and the boy didn't think his opponent bore much likeness to Gretzky. He'd make a grab for the clothing and if he could get ahold of it then he would carry out his threats and beat the spring out of Yariel's step. If he couldn't, then he'd take the next best thing; getting a hand on the spear haft, between the elf's own two. There was no way Yariel could bring the spear to bare when Tiem was so close, and if all he did was backpedal trying to put distance between them, he'd soon find that this ring felt a lot smaller when his back was to the wall. So if he continued to run, he would continue to be chased, and the moment he stopped to try and drop into a stance of any sort, that would be the moment Tiem overtook him.

Yariel knew all about the ring. Ever since he arrived, he had examined the size of the room, calculating how his movements were going to be, and how much space he had to work with. It was one of the reasons why he never performed a back direction without a direction to the right or left, so that he could lower the chances of even coming toward a wall. This was a tactic any fighter should know before they take any combat.
Returning to the fight, his opponent was intending on closing in, so that would not be overlooked. So since this was evident, Yariel would not perform that second stab. Instead, he will pull back to the spear while redirecting the head of it upwards to move it close to his body, twirling it just for a few degrees to the right, still kept in front of him, though his left side angling toward Tiem, so that his right hand was now close to the top and his left lower, changing the positions of his hands.
And since he was in this position, Yariel pushes with his left hand, the non-bladed end near the ground moving in an arc to strike for Tiem's right shin. No matter how disadvantage one thought of an opponent's weapon, it was a adisadvantage in itself to rule out all possibilities of that weapon being used in other advantageous ways, and this one. Since Yariel still was moving backwards and strafing, along with his left side being angled forward, he had the advantage of momentum, because with Tiem having to reach out his hand to grab for Yariel, he left his right side open from, yes, the right side, so his right shin was about to take a good hit. Now, he couldn't exactly sweep his opponent off his feet, but this should be one to many marks he was going to inflict on Tiem's body. Another one of the plans Yariel had cooked up before this whole thing began.

(( Not really in the mood for an EPIC-LENGTH post. )) Everything being done depending entirely on timing. Would Yariel keep his distance long enough for his new twirling-maneuver to lash out before Tiem's grab, which had happened two posts back? The answer seemed to be yes. The half-elf avoided the grab long enough to readjust his weapon and make an attack at the boy that was giving chase; but the one mistake in his perfect defense would bring him one step closer towards the end. In order to attack, Yariel must first have been attacked. The grab would have gone exactly as described earlier, as it was being attempted exactly as described earlier. The exception being that instead of punching the half-elf in the face immediately after, the boy... speared him in the torso? Yes, a spear, the show-tastic pro-wrestling move where you just ram your head into the other guy like a bull seeing red, and the very same move that seems like it would be far more painful for the person doing it than the person receiving it. Why? Well, some of it might have had to do with the fact that his forward leg had just been bashed by a stick and he'd sort of fallen into the opponent because of that. Though it also might have had to do with the fact that when Tiem wrenched at Yariel's chest to pull him in closer, he also stepped in against the opponent - dropping his stick and swiping his left arm right between the spearman's legs. No, it he wasn't checking to see if being half-elf meant that Yariel was also half-woman (despite popular belief), nor was he performing a lolololololol nutshot. Using his firm grip on the torso, and an arm between Yariel's legs, the boy just... lifted him clear from the ground. Somewhere two levels up in the old missile silo, J.R. was sitting there in a cowboy hat screaming obscenities into a microphone. And then... gravity.

The grab was only dependent upon if it suceeded at first, for the grab had went on the assumption that Yariel was allowing him to thrust out his arm and just standing there. Even then was his still moving, so his left side being the main focus would have caused the grab to miss either way while he performs the bash of his lance into the shin. So if Tiem was attempting for a spear, then he was instead was falling forward, the worst position to be in when someone was hovering over him with a lethal weapon.
But he would not try to go for a lethal shot. Instead, he steps his left foot over to the left side of Tiem from behind, actually sitting on his back, or lower back for if he was catching himself, and brings the spear from overhead to go past Tiem's face and then pulls against it, resulting in the brutal move known as a choke, using the very polearm. Tiem's own trachea was in danger of losing air as Yariel would keep the grip, keeping pinned against Tiem's back. And with that stick called a sword no longer in Tiem's hand, Yariel had little to worry about. His left hand was close to the neck of Tiem while his right was up the staff near the blade, to allow him to keep his left side mostly against Tiem. This way, the leverage of the right side of the polearm would allow for even more power in the choke.

Cdore so his left side being the main focus would have caused the grab to miss either way Because bashing at the boy's right leg means that the lance is lowered on his own left side and unable to protect the chest, leaving an opening with which to be grappled. Owaitno that's why the grab was going to connect either way. That is, of course, unless Yariel was just going to flex and break the boy's fingers or something like that. Everyone knows that leaving yourself open doesn't necessarily mean that someone can exploit that opening, because if you just really don't want to get hit then it can't happen.

In response to that defence, Yariel was not opened in the least bit. Tiem was not close enough to have grabbed for it because despite his willingness to get close, Yariel still had the headstart in the first place to keep the distance from closing considerably to clinch range. There was a defence because to whack at Tiem's shin did not ever require him to remove the head of the staff from his body. It was crossed diagonally, as if he was holding a broom to sweep the floor, to show a reference to how he was holding it.
However, the grab Tiem had wanted wouldn't make it because of Yariel avoiding it. So, now he does the choke manuever.
