Character Profile
Name: Karin Makarios Gender: Female Age: 28 Occupation: Firefighter Likes: being physically active, team sports, stringed instruments, Italian food, the color blue Dislikes: being alone, waiting in lines, insulting her family, spicy things
Hobbies: Sports, like paintball and lacrosse, for the feeling that comes with competition, the feeling that you've triumphed and conquered through your own power and improved yourself whether you win or lose (winning is nice though.). She prefers team sports, as she feels the most satisfaction from working with others towards a common goal. She also enjoys tests of skill, like darts or pool, but the sense of fufilment isn't as great. Surprisingly enough, Karin also has a great interest in music. She learned to play the cello in high school and has kept up her skills.
Appearance: Karin is toned from a lifetime spent out-doors and from the physical requirements of her job. Nowhere near having a body-builders muscle mass, she is more lean than buff. She works out regularly to maintain this physique. She is not particularly well endowed, a fact her co-workers are quick to use as ammunition in their frequent rivalries. Her black hair is straight and rather limp. Short bangs hang above her forehead, with longer strands hanging down past her temples that get progressively longer from in front of her ears, till they reach their maximum length at the nape of her neck. Her only real distinguishing mark is a tattoo of a St. Florian's cross on her left shoulder.
Personality: Karin is a relaxed and sedate individual, with an abundance of good humor. She is perpetually smiling and frequently laughing. She finds nothing easier than going with the flow and can be very accomodating to the point of making things an inconvenience for herself. This doesn't mean that she's a pushover, however. She's very confident in herself and has no problem making her voice heard if she feels the need. Most of the time, she feels no such compulsion. Karin lives by the motto of "Don't sweat the small stuff" and files most of life's little details into this category. Her one real weakspot is her family. After her mother and brother's death, she made her family the focus of her life, working to keep them together in a healthy functional unit. To say that she takes critisicms of them badly would be an understatement. Harassing members of her family is probably the only thing that incites her to violence.
She tends to be somewhat clingy to those close to her and is very physically affectionate. She also requires an almost constant need for activity, even if it's just sitting and watching TV. When left with nothing to occupy her time she sulks and broods, becoming lethargic and preoccupied with thoughts of things she can't change. In such a funk, she's easily distractable, leaping upon any suggested activity, and sometimes retaliates with an obviously forced cheer just to get people to leave her be. She really doesn't like talking about her problems, she doesn't want to be a burden to anybody.
Background: Karin is part of a large family centered in a small midwest town. As one of the elder children, she got used to putting aside her personal interests to help out the family. Tragedy struck when her mother and brother were killed in a car crash on a family vacation. Her father was having trouble dealing with it so it fell to she and her older brother to keep things running. This event also spurred her interest in paramedics and firefighters as those paralyzing moments watching and waiting for help to arrive and being unable to do anything at all was agonizing to her. Once things more or less resumed normalcy, she joined the local fire department, first as an EMT, then later as a firefighter.
Family: Father, Mother (deceased), four brothers (one older, two younger, one deceased), miscellanious aunts, uncles, and cousins

The Wyvern
In heraldry, the wyvern is symbolic of many different and sometimes opposing ideals. As with most draconic crests, it represents power and strength, as well as swift vengance. It also represents many negative aspects such as pestilence, war, and viciousness. As a symbol of alchemy, the wyvern represents matter in its original (untransmutated) form.
The wyvern varies from the standard western dragon in that instead of being a six-limbed beast, it is depicted as having only four limbs, either a pair of forelegs or hindlegs, and a pair of wings. In addition, the tail has been portrayed as being fish-like, having a barbed or spade-like tip, or being serpentine with no adornments. Horns, spikes, and claws vary with each heraldic crest, though bird-like talons are common.
Myths and legend show the wyvern as able to breath fire, or in some cases acid. The barb on its' tail is said to be venomous. It is know for being blood thirsty and brutal towards foes, but capable of great affection and a protective instinct towards those it has imprinted on.
Why a Wyvern?
For the most part, I am basing my wyvern on the legend of the Mordiford Wyvern as related in the book, "Dragons: A Natural History" by Dr. Karl Shuker and improvising on the rest. (For the curious, a complete transcript of the story can be found here: http://draconika.com/legends/maud-wyvern.php)
Karin is fanatically protective of her loved ones and never forgets a kindness done to her. She tends to be very aggressive with this protective instinct, often threatening violence and then following though to get her point across. This violence is only directed at those who would threaten those she considers under her protection and never towards her friend and family. As exemplified in the tale of Maud and the wyvern, the wyvern never once harmed Maud, she who had taken care of it and been it's playmate, even though it quickly turned its' predations on the rest of the village and the knight come to slay it.
Also, I find the irony of a firefighter becoming a beast associated with fire breathing amusing.
Ideal Stage Progressions
I realize that the process itself is left up to the artist. This is just my take on it, mostly to help me plot out possible behavioral changes.
- Dormancy
- Awakening
- Metamorphosis
- Evolution
- Genesis
(brille or nictitating membrane)
Karin is one of those people who simply cannot survive long on their own. When left to her own devices, she will literally do nothing and just lose herself in her thoughts, doing the absolute bare minimum, if even that, to cope with daily life. She has developed to the point where she cannot live for herself. She's not good enough for it. But with someone else for her to depend on - and be depended on in return - she thrives.

All about the Pukka
A rather plain ring, found while out on a call. Karin feels guilty about having it, given that she should've ignored the small sparkling object at her feet and been focusing on her job, but she reached down and grabbed the sucker anyways. She couldn't shake the irrational idea that someone had set it there just for her. The thought that someone else could come and take it is what really spurred her to keep it. There's nothing special about it, to her eyes. She just happens to like the way it shines in the light. She decided it's her good luck charm and keeps it in her locker.
