I've got the Doctor/Master relationship thinig my head. I keep replaying the bit where he says "Master." in my head. There's something about it.....

There's a history between the Doctor and the Master, and much speculation of it's nature. Brothers, friends, master and pupil? Let your imagination run wild!

I know what you mean about the history between them. I don't know what they were, but it's an intriguing question. Kind of fun.

Ohh, the possibilities are endless! ninja
... yet strangely enough my brain has had such a rush of all the possibilities appearing simultaneously that it can't choose just one or two ideas to write down. Traffic jam... 0.o

Well, they were in the Academy together on Gallifrey and he's the Doctor's "best enemy". There was also that "you wouldn't do this to your own..." line that was never ended 'flesh and blood' but started the father-son/brothers theories. As far as I can make out *'New Who' fan so has been reading*

But since I think there was that single un-finished line only (still reading though)... until it becomes can't be argued with canon that they're related-related, I think of them as old school rivals. Who grew up and 900 years later are still at odds with each other XD

They're brothers.

I remember hearing somewhere (it might have been at this guild) that there was an episode that explained that, but it never was aired because the actor who was playing the Master in the episode died. (Old series, btw.)

If someone could confirm or deny this, please do.

O.K, so this was a daydream I had in bed last night. I was envisioning the both of them as David and John, which makes no sense, but what the hey, they were both younger then. Yeah, so, in my daydream, the Doctor was new to the academy, while the Master was in his second year. And, this is kinda weird, but the Doctor is bullied by the Master (who is sorta like the kingpin of his year). This slowly becomes a slightly odd friendship/rivalry (them both being of similar intelligence). I'm working on building this up into something that could be turned into a fanfiction.

Quote:
"Fans have occasionally seized upon the two Time Lords' rivalry to speculate that the Master and the Doctor are, in fact, brothers. Such speculation was fueled by the Master's last line in Planet of Fire, which was originally scripted by Peter Grimwade (with permission from script editor Eric Saward) to allude to this as "Doctor, could you do this to your own..." However, this line was excised in post-production, and the Master's last words in the story are somewhat obscured. On the other hand, Lance Parkin's novel The Gallifrey Chronicles implies that the Doctor and the Master had different fathers. Like all spin-off media, the canonicity of these two books in relation to the television series is unclear."

From Wikipedia.

Soooo, we have a line that never made it and a spin off novel. The novel to me isn't strickly canon as didn't happen on the TV show. And the line was taken out which means it didn't happen in said TV show - so to me, until they straight forwardly say so on the TV show... whee

I've read about that, too, in Wikipedia. The Wikipedia thing describes them as aspects of the same person instead of brothers, but I don't know. It was going to be the Third Doctor's and the Master's last episode. The actor, Roger Delgado, tragically died in a car accident when he was doing some filming in Turkey for a movie. The Final Game

I think the reason he said it the way he did was that He reilised that he is nolonger the last of the time lords.

It is assumed by many (including me) that the Doctor and the Master are brothers, but it has never been confirmed nor denyed.

Their relationship has somehow always had an extra element to it, so I think it is possible they are related.
They are the two Black sheep of the Time Lords, so I think they may have a bond through that- know a bit about how the other feels.

(for those who don't know the old series and have no idea what I'm on about, I'll elborate)

*ahem*

This idea of the TL's being dead except for the Doctor was a new idea from this new series. In the old series, the TL's were very much alive and we saw them on many occasions (even the councill of Time Lords!)

The point is, TL's have a rule about not meddling in time, and the Doctor ignores this. SO he was bannished from Gallifrey, and spent his life a lonely traeller through time, causing a bit of trouble here and there. Fortunately, he meddles in time to do good and for the general beefit of the universe and everyone in it.
However, the Master was also bannished for meddling in time. The reason they have the sort of yin-and-yang-opposites-thing, and are nemesises is becasue the Master is the one who meddles in time to do bad, and look after his own interest.

an episode was written for the third doctor where it was going to be revealed that they were brothers but sadly the guy who played the master died on the way to the shoot for it, so it was never made.

I think they were friends once but became rivals and the Master became evil and the Doctor couldn't support him anymore

I dought that becasue If you see the first episode with the master the doctor never knew who the master was.

One of the more accepted theories that I know of is that the doctor and the master were at the academy together. They were part of a group of student who were radicals (think communists etc). A rogue element of Gallifreyan society. The only other name I can remember from the group was the rani (spelling is probably off). The group eventually split up and the doctor was the only one who continued their ideals.
Im currently trying to find the material to back this up, but I know its fairly accurate.
