{:About the Guardians:}

Name: Kara Winters
Age: 23
Race: Angel

About: Her origins unknown Kara was adopted by Daemon Winters and Yume Mizu Winters, both parents disappeared or died when she was very young. She currently is the mother of over a dozen children, she has help looking after them from her love Donovan.

Between looking after the inn, the school she founded along side Tracy Scott and of course all the children she has her hands full. Fortunately half of her Second children have grown up and begun families of their own.

Name: Lau Donovan
Age: 25
Race: Human

About: Donovan hails from the East, from the Lau clan, and was a former assassin by profession. For the most part, Donovan is retired in being an assassin and now uses his skills to be a mercenary choosing jobs that won't conflict with Kara's morals or his own.

He hadn't expected to fall in love, but now he finds himself being the father to her children (for those still young enough to need a father that is), and taking care of Kara.

{:About The Family:}

Winters Siblings: While most people would agree families tend to get big, but this family is huge. Lin has over a dozen siblings, and the numbers change as time goes on. Many of them are Seconds like her, and most of them are much older than her in age. All of them ranging from angels like her mother to mermaids and elves.

Nieces and Nephews: Even though Lin is young comparted to most of them (or the same age!) she is alread the aunt to nine other Seconds, one is the son of Yuki, three belong to Yue, Triton had adopted a neko and Elnara has five Seconds of her own.

Daemon Winters:
Daemon is Lin's grandfather, who has been missing since her mother was very little. He's currently sealed inside a sword, and has been lost in the Four Lands over a lot longer than anyone has been alive.

Lau Clan: While Donovan's family has normally nothing to do with the Winters' Lin's existence, will perhaps gain some interesting attention.

{:Lin's Room:}

Here in Lin's room that has been set aside just for her, is where she gets to keep her things. Such as toys and everything like a little girl likes.

{:First Timer:}

5th of July, 2007

This thing, about recording the growth and going ons of a child is a tradition developed by many who have adopted stage growing children. This is a tradition I, Lau Donovan do not partake in. However, with the adoption of Lin, Kara insists I should be the one to write in Lin’s journal. Since this is a tradition of family I cannot argue.

I named her Lin, it was the first thing I could think of, it means ‘beautiful jade’, and jade is one of the most precious stones back home. It would suit for a child who comes into this family.

Her vase is in the dark colours, of black and blue. There are black fireworks coming out of it, and they have been for a long while. Otherwise there is nothing else to report.

And no, I’m not putting down my thoughts on this, because I have no thoughts on this, it is a vase with fireworks sprouting out of it. End of story.

{:Twitch:}

There was a small tick developing under the deadpanned gaze that Donovan was giving the newly born Second. Under normal circumstances Kara would have whacked him in the arm by now, accusing him of scaring the child. Only, the child wasn’t really scared as she stared up giant of a man in her eyes, meeting gaze for gaze. If that was not enough, Kara was still recovering from shock from the child Donovan had named Lin. Lin, for the most part was a normal human Second girl, after all she had two arms, two legs, and body, and all her facial parts were in their proper places. What made Lin so strange was not her clothes or any markings like the mertwins, but rather she looked eerily like a combination of Donovan and Kara, which was now the problem Donovan was having trouble wrapping his mind around.

She blinked, slowly and deliberately taking in the man that was staring at her with her wide greens eyes. He twitched, they were green eyes, though far more vivid than Kara’s green-blue eyes, they were still green eyes. Something he had been told once that did run in Kara’s family, the girl was quite light skinned too. However, that was where the resemblance to Kara ended, and resemblance to him began. Beyond the fact that the child… Second… was meeting him gaze for gaze she had a head of chin length hair that was black with dark brown highlights. It was straight and fine like some of his female cousins.

He twitched again thinking on how her hair was as if someone mixed his hair and Kara’s light brown hair. It pretty much described the girl. If it weren’t for the fact the child looked a doll, which was an obvious side she wasn’t the normal human majority of Gaia’s population was use to, she could be mistaken for their daughter. Lin blinked finally breaking the silent staring contest before looking over to Kara, tittering over to the woman to be picked up. Absently, Donovan wondered how this was going to come back and bite him in the a**.

After all the resemblance was uncanny…

{:Social Skills What Social Skills?:}

5th of September

Don't complain to me that there hasn't been a lot of writing going on, I'm quite busy and it's not like Lin has been doing anything usual. Though I'm told having my personality in something as cute as Lin is unsettling by a few of the members of the family. So she's a bit blunt... and lacks normal tact... and probably to an extent certain social skills it's not like she's assualted anyone yet. I leave the assualting to Mia thank you.

Lin though is odd, I don't know what I expected when she came out of her vase. I guess I expected her to be energentic like Celebor, or shy like Serenity, or hell just something kind of child like. Not that she isn't child like, she has simple child logic, can't count very high (in either language), and sees things in more or less black and white. The problem is... she's damn observant and pretty opinionated at times. It probably doesn't help she's blunt too.

Granted due to some odd rules here and there I can't go and observe her myself when she's in the Second World, so everything I get is hearsay. Not that she doesn't vent sometimes (it's kind of odd seeing a kid vent like she does). On the bright side, giving her ice cream mochi calms her down, she kind of gnaws at the dough though... very viciously I might add when she's upset.

{: Raising One's Self:}

2nd of January

The girl, Lin has a funny way of raising herself. Even though she is like many children in where she likes to spend a lot of time with her parental figures (namely me) and likes to emulate what they do (why me?) she manages to do so without taking up a great deal of time. Granted, a great deal of this could be due to the incident several months ago where Triton, Yue and I went to Elnara’s world and Lin followed. While we were gone tracking down the people tormenting Serenity, Lin apparently spent those weeks at the castle refusing to leave. She has made fast friends with Earendil and Sir Valemdar, while making Ruel the person she has determined to change via stalking. I don’t see how stalking can help, but somehow in her logic it will.

Since then she likes to visit a lot, to play with Earendil, even though due to the time difference he ages much quicker. I wonder how much she truly understands that, since time will stand still for no one, there is always a chance he might not be around there forever. Still, through that, she has raised her self, half raised herself that is at the castle.

The other thing is, she is not hard to teach. Most young children you have to pull teeth to get them to learn. Lin on the other hand I think is taking on more than what she should at her age. She insisted on being with me for my morning exercises to the point where I ended up teaching her katas as well. She has writing with Kara, and languages with me, and had recently taken up to try and learn Elvish from Sir Valemdar, though I think she is also learning history but that is more in a story form. I wonder why she is so insistent in trying to learn, she does it for no other reason than she deems the need to know how to do something.

I wonder if it has anything to do with a particular encounter with a Second that had left her fuming when she came home. Well, I won’t look a gifted horse in the mouth, I just hope for her sake she doesn’t bite off more than she can chew. She has a lot of pride to her.

{: Butterfly Child:}

They whispered, their voices are muted among the voices of the present living. Not that these voices were dead, but they were the past, whether they were days, weeks or even no more than five minutes before. Regardless they were still the past, and their soft murmurings reflected this. After all, these voices were only echoes, carried on the wings of butterflies. Butterflies with such a heavy burden to bare that they must, when they can unload their burden unto another.

At least, one must count the blessings that it is not the burden of the dead.

Still, they flutter about, tiny feet crawling along the skin as if to find a hole at which to relief themselves of these voices. Light feathery pin pricks across the skin as they made a trail to the ears that could ear without taking in the sounds of life. Filling the mind with the endless drabbles of daily life.

At least, one must be blessed it is only daily life.

It is not the screams or cries of the suffering, nor is it not the mournful sighs of the still living. There is only the endless conversation of people going about their daily lives unaware, so unaware that someone is listening to it. Sometimes the voices speak a language the listener has never heard, but she tries. To learn, and learn to understand why, why she keeps hearing these butterfly voices. Hearing them since she grew, having them come to her as if she was the queen of butterflies. She wonders and wishes they would sometimes leave. Instead of filling her head with these useless things. However she knows that these things might someday be useful, and so she listens and learns to choose to take or discard what she wants.

Little girl, whose life has just begun, what will you hear in the future? Will it be always the endless chatter of the normal life, or will you hear more. Will you perhaps one day, send out beyond your little butterflies and hear the voices of those in need?

{:The Mountain:}
17th of February

I don’t know what in the hell she was doing, I don’t know what exactly happened, but I do wish she would at least curb her enthusiasm. Not that it is necessarily a bad thing, makes her easier to teach, but Lin just might be the youngest person to ever work herself to the ground. Right on the day of the New Years, she managed to somehow get her clothes dirty. Well… not exactly dirty, it just wasn’t pleasant to peel off her sweaty clothes.

She’s proud though, and she should be. It seems instead of the usual lessons, Lin went to try and climb the very long stair case leading up the mountain again. This time she made it, and as she told him it meant she can train with the soldiers up there.

I think she’s hinting at something.

Correction, I don’t think, I know. It was damn well obvious after the request to be there for a week.

Not to mention her asking if there was any high places to train.

It is almost time to consider a clan for her to learn with, perhaps mother can pull a few strings and get her to train with the Darke clan for a while.

{:Already Wanting to Leave?:}
6th of March

I wonder sometimes with all the time Lin spends outside, why she doesn’t tan. It would be quite tempting to say she got it from Kara, but the girl is no more blood related to her than she is to me. Though sometimes I have to wonder if maybe the goddesses didn’t steal blood from the both of us when making Lin. Huh… maybe I should wait to see if the girl sprouts wings or something, though the thought is kind of amusing.

Less amusing though is the debate of education, honestly normally Kara just shoves Lin into the education system with the rest of the siblings, only Lin has taken up too much. It’s probably best to make her a part time student and then homeschool her in the rest. Actually I wonder how long that would work, since there is always something Lin wants to know.

And what in the hell is this talk about traveling? Okay, I do know where that came from, but she seems to be more determined than ever and I don’t know if I should take it seriously or not. Kara says take it seriously and points to her three eldest sons. Point and case, she’s right I should take her seriously, but who in the hell knows about old fashion traveling?

On a random note… Lin is just as inept with fire magic as Kara, as father found out, but that’s a story for another time.

{:The Problems of Lessons:}

In retrospect, she should have not been so surprised, and yet Kara had to wonder as she peered down at the little girl before her, in why exactly it was she was surprised. Lin Winters (Lau) looked up at her mother with wide green eyes gave the air of innocent while at the same time sparkling with mischief. Her hands were clasped behind her back, as she tried her best not to rock on her heels before her mother.

“Lin….” Kara sighed.

They had been through this before; Lin’s workload was already heavier than normal children her age. It was a wonder why her peers hadn’t accused her of working her daughter to death, if it weren’t for the fact everyone knew that Lin chose every lesson except the core subjects. Which was why, as the headmistress of the school and as her mother, she was not going to assign Lin anymore lessons.

Apparently the little girl had other plans, “Please Mommy?”

Kara sat back in her chair, the plush lining soothing her sore back and calling for her to let her guard down. She wondered, absently in the back of her mind if Lin had waited to ask at this moment knowing her mother would be tired from hours of doing paperwork. It sounded like something Donovan would do, though she would like to believe that Lin had not picked up Donovan’s manipulative ways quite yet. On the other hand, it sounded like wishful thinking on her part.

“Lin,” Kara replied in her firmest voice, “You are already learning four languages, meditation, the basics in hand to hand fighting, and because you really wanted to, staff work as well. That doesn’t include the core subjects you have to take. Why on earth do you want to take magic lessons?”
“Because I want to learn it.”

She had to admit that was probably the most obvious answer out of Lin, but at least the little girl did not tell her it was because she hadn’t learn it yet. Though both answers amounted to the same thing anyways, Kara was not willing to let Lin add on another lesson.

“That’s not good enough, Lin you are already taking more lessons than Triton did when he was your age, and you grow slower then he does. There is no reason why you should be learning at all.”
“But most of my sisters and brothers know magic and they learned when they were Surprises,” the little girl pointed out.

Give the child credit Kara thought, at least she was not whining and actually coming up with a decent argument. One, that she found difficult to rebuke, because it was true. Traditionally the children of the Winters family learned magic at a young age, and Lin should have been no different. Kara resisted the urge to sigh, most parents would adore a child like Lin, but at this point it was giving Kara a headache trying to keep her from over doing it.
“And I’ll start small,” she added noticing her mother was not arguing at the moment, “I could learn how to make lights, Miyu wants to learn that too right? So we can learn together.”

Despite the fact that Lin was not the blood child of either of them, she was so blaming Donovan for Lin’s ability to argue. He would pull something like this; he did it all the time when planning for meetings. Kara looked again once more at the determined little girl, she didn’t have Donovan’s harsh features, but she did very much have his stubborn streak.

“Couldn’t you wait until you’ve grown again?” Kara asked desperately wanting to remain in somewhat control of her daughter’s education, “By then you should have control of those languages.”
“But I would just learn more anyways,” Lin replied in a matter of fact manner.
Now she knew how Donovan felt, “Why are you going to learn more languages?”
“Well… if I’m going traveling then it might be a good idea to know all the languages.”

Who was she kidding? Kara pinched the bridge of her nose, revealing exactly how aggravating she was finding this situation. She might as well admit it, the day Lin decided she wanted to learn something was the day Kara lost control of the girl’s education. Most of the extra lessons were her choice, and those were only the languages she insisted on learning whenever she had the chance. It did not include the mini lessons she went out on, like horse back riding, or tracking, or something along those lines.

She was just going to take on more lessons.

Donovan had reminded her of this as they were going through Lin’s lesson plan after her growth to child. Kara just wished she didn’t want to take on lessons so soon.

“And I already have a gift,” Lin added, “So I should do more with it.”

Oh yes, the butterfly gift, Kara wondered if that gift stemmed from her owns obsession with the fluttering creatures. In which Lin’s gift might be her fault, she really didn’t want to think about that as well.

“You need to drop one of your other lessons in order to take on another one, your work is already too much as it is,” she was going to repeat this one more time, “And there are no lessons you wish to drop, and you cannot drop the core subjects until you finish them.”

The little girl paused and thought about it, she didn’t need to ask why, she knew why it was important to know the core subjects. So she thought about it a bit more, and looked very thoughtful at her mother. For a moment Kara thought she could breath a sigh of relief. After all Lin, for all her logical arguing was quite reasonable.

“So… if I finished one of my core subjects then I can take another?” she asked innocently.
Kara eyed her daughter warily, “Yes…..”
“What would I have to do, to finish a core subject?”
“You would have to learn ahead and take the exception exam.”

Which Kara knew would mean a better grasp of the writing in order to answer a question, and having to know an extensive amount of certain subject, unless of course it was math. That would take students several years though to manage that, until she realized Seconds didn’t have several years. They were of course short growing people, who learned very quickly. She paled when she realized she gave her daughter an out.

“Okay then, I’ll just go and see which lesson would be the best to learn fast,” Lin smiled at her mother, “And then I’ll learn magic.”

With that Lin skipped out of her mother’s office, leaving her mother with a very large headache. She didn’t even want to know which subject Lin was going to choose.
