Our band doesn't play at my elementary school's graduation. At my graduation last month, we sang "We Go Together" from Grease. We didn't have instruments at our graduation. crying

Canon and Gigue! : D It really is a beautiful song when played to it's fullest potential. Most people will just think it's Vitamin C >_>
Kind of overplayed, maybe? But it's still an amazing peice.

Half the band cried the first time we played it (sightreading). But I played the bassoon part, so I don't know your part so well. We play Pomp and Circumstances, Fanfare and Processional, the 3rd movement of the Carmen Opera, and another piece I forget. I really really really really dislike Pomp and Circumstances.

*twitches violently* I share the EXTREME dislike for pomp and circumstance, our band played that, moonrise and american elegy.....do you have any idea the violent boredom moonrise illicits when your a flute??? honestly you get maybe 5 quarter notes in the whole peice... the rest is slurred whole notes or rest *twitches more* but its such a pretty peice to listen to....

In high school, we played the usual - Pomp and Circumstance, Star Spangled Banner, a symphonic band piece the seniors would vote on, our Alma Mater, and Music for a Ceremony for recessional.
In college, our graduations were held in the stadium. So while the crowds gathered - 20,000+ people, and I'm NOT KIDDING - we played a 20-30 minute set - a "pre-processional" if you will. This consisted of easy concert band music that made us sound good. Then it was Pomp and Circumstance and Pagentry. What made P & C SLIGHTLY cooler in college was, yes, we played the typical (kill me now) melody but we also played the hard part NO ONE ever plays. If you ever hear the full version of P & C (by Elgar, I believe), the beginning part is sooooo awesome. For recessional, we'd play Festival Prelude and some other piece by Alfred Reed.
So there's my life story. redface

Yep, Pomp and Circumstance. But I'm surprised we're not the only ones who do American Elegy -- we thought our director was crazy, cause we figure that it's kind of inappropriate to play something that's that intense and written for a specific (terribly depressing) occassion
