He had been hunting somewhere along the way, he was almost sure of it.

Well, at least he told himself he was sure, because the truth was that he couldn't rightly remember what he had been doing before this point, other than scratching away at the bark of a tumbled down tree. Exciting. Right. And it seemed that no matter how hard he pursued the thought, or how narrowly he squinted his eyes (for his belief was the more you squint, the more you can remember!) the memory of actually doing something of importance never reached him.

Otto squinted until his eyes sealed shut.

"Right. Yes. Not working anymore." He grinned and shook himself, swinging around to survey the area. There was a lull to air around him, which most wolves would relish, but this one found himself particularly bored with it. Though of a mostly docile nature, Otto found more excitement in the chase, the hubbub of life.

He sat down with a small 'wumph'. It didn't help at all that his stomach was making a racket.

"Quiet you. The next thing that pops from those bushes, I promise to eat. Now sit still and let me think!"

Of course he wasn't crazy. He was just...talking to his stomach.

The sound of bird calls filled the air, but along them one was,....strange, to say the least. It was a throaty sort of caw or tweet, and sounded quite out of the ordinary for anyone to here, especially see. For, with his front paws propped up against a tree, head raised heaven-ward to the birds in the canopy of the forest. Cody was an unusual hunter to say the least, for the main reason, that he really couldn't hunt. The only real reason he was a hunter was because he didn't want sentry duty, really. Of course, he wasn't with his pack anymore, so it really didn't matter.

Either way, the male was really hungry. Brown ears flicked forwards as he heard something nearby, emerald eyes blinked and the male sauntered quietly over. Nothing came in front of his curiosity, not even his hunger. Squeezing past a few bushes, the big male looked around.

Otto's ears ticked fervently atop his head, as though trying to filter out all the sounds and calls around him. He wasn't very fond of bird, and so the harsh caw of the other wolf didn't seem foreign - the dusty pawed canine half wondered whether a bird was choking on a bit of grub some ways off.

The thought had him chuckling.

Stay on task! he chided himself. It didn't bode well to get caught up on some other little happening within the forest, especially when your stomach was about to attack your spleen!

His ears swivelled forward. Someone...something was coming, and possible thing was probably edible. Otto lowered his head and crouched down, tail lowering like a flag; you had to wonder whether he really was going to attack or whether he was going to play! He couldn't be serious!

A grin more vulpine than wolf darted beneath his nose, and when Cody's own nose barely pressed through the foliage, Otto was in the air.

Halfway through his pounce, however, and the wolf opposite was in full view.

Too big, too big!

"Watch out!" he cried, flailing his paws in attempts to pull back.

But it was too - CRASH! - late.

As the other wolf yelled out, Cody stopped, his body stiffening automatically and the large male unable to let out a syllable, just staring agape as Otto tackle him, eyes wide. BAM!

Slightly dazed, the hunter blinked, in a tangle of limbs as he wriggled under the mass of other male that had collided with him. "What was that for!?" he asked, confused and surprised at the fellow canine on top of him. But he had to admit, if he were watching bit instead of being in it, it'd be pretty damn cool.

Oh good heavens! It was like vertigo, or like having his brain popped out of his skull. Otto blinked slowly and disentangled himself from the he-wolf pile, though he didn't shimmy too far away, and promptly collapsed again at Cody's side. Another thing to add to the list of 'really stupid incidents' in the life and times of Otto. So much for that whole 'exceptional hunter' business.

"That," he said, amusement coloring his voice. "was done in the name of food."

He slung a paw over his muzzle and began to laugh; no apology, no nothing, just a shaking bundle of wolf, with a headache the size of an oak tree.

And suddenly he was on his feet, looking a little dazed to say the least, "Sorry about that " - he chortled again - "It wasn't exactly in my itinerary to attack a fellow wolf."

His stomach growled in protest, "Although my stomach wouldn't be opposed to a little cannibalism..."

His eyes crinkled as he grinned.

Finally... the male thought, groaning a bit as he was able to sit up, shaking his fur quickly before looking to the strange pastel-furred male that was that close to him. A bit too close for his personal tastes, feeling uncomfortable at how near he was and scooching over a bit from the other male. Guys did not get close.

Food? Cody gave the other wolf a confused look. Did he expect to eat him? "It's fine." he replied with a care-less shrug of his shoulders, trying to look cool. But at his next comment, he stiffened up, looking at Otto in surprise. He couldn't be serious, could he?

Otto picked up on the other's sudden wariness, and his smile only lengthened, though he otherwise said nothing; let him believe what he wanted to, it was more fun that way. He sat down with a flourish of his tail, not at all cautious in the presence of another, larger wolf.

"No bruised ego? No rattled brain? That was rather graceless of me," he said, head canting. Then he continued, more to himself than to Cody, "Good, good. Better bruised than broken!"

With the clash of the titans so to speak, all the furry woodland creatures - also known as Otto's possible meal ticket - had probably been spooked to kingdom come. If push came to shove, he supposed he could eat grass...he eyed the ground dubiously.

"Not so much as the scurry of a rabbit today!" he quipped, almost happily at that. "Don't suppose you have any grub to spare?"

The young, sort-kinda-but-really-wasn't hunter raised an eyebrow at the weird male's ranting, having no idea what the hell he was taking about. He pondered the possible meanings, but didn't get that far, for the male wasn't that bright. "Me?" he said, popping out of his thoughts. "Uh, nope, sorry mate. None on me, I was just goin' hunting myself. Though I doubt I'll get much of a meal.." Cody said, his stomach gurgling in emphasis.

Not so much as a tweak of ear in disappointment!

Otto stared unblinkingly at Cody for quite a while, an aloof smile playing on the edges of his mouth. Well, one hungry wolf had a hard enough time finding something to eat, but maybe two would have more luck. He wasn't exactly used to sharing meals with others, but then again, he'd never hunted with another wolf before! His gaze focused, bright with ideas.

"Let's hunt." Otto stated, promptly climbing to his feet. He swung his eyes towards the bushes whence Cody came, "You're hungry, I'm hungry - two wolves can probably find something worthwhile to dig their teeth into, I'mah right or what?"

Although Otto wasn't as adept at catching forest life as he was oceanic life...

Cody nodded, shaking his grey and rust colored pelt as he stood up. "You're right. Let's rustle up ourselves some grub." The hunter looked around for a moment, as though thinking his furry little meal was going to hop forward on cue, skippedy-skip into his jaws. A pink lashed out and he licked his chops, tail swaying at the thought as he followed the other male.

That's the spirit!

A swift smile darted across Otto's maw before it swung to the floor, nosing for a scent he could just barely catch. He rounded the minute clearing, before leaping into the brush the opposite of which the other wolf had come. His ears piqued forward until they ached, and he strained to familiarize himself with the awkward terrain. However, it was much easier to hunt in the forest than on the beach, where solid food was scarce and the ocean played with your nose.

He stopped and danced in place for a moment, "If I didn't know any better..." He paused and gauged the situation, looking back at Cody.

"There's a lull...stale air...smells like a den." And not as close as he would have liked. The pastel-pelted male leapt headlong into the surrounding foliage with a clatter of branches.

"Otto!" he shouted over his shoulder; after all, not exchanging names with your hunting partner would be daft.

Ears pricked curiously Cody followed the strange wolf, watching him. He must really know what he's doing... The young male thought to himself, blinking as he looked around the forest. He couldn't smell a thing, but of course, air scents were harder to trace, unless the prey was close. Apparently that wasn't the case, and his stomach gave an enraged gurgle at their futile progress.

"A den? Like, a rabbit den?" His pink tongue flicked over ivory teeth once more at the thought, shuffling through the bushes and vegetation around him as opposed to doing as his companion had.

Otto? For a moment the hunter stopped, wondering why he'd said that. Otto didn't mean anything, or did i-. The wolf never got to finish his statement, falling headfirst over an over-grown root he'd tripped over. Apparently the fall knocked some sense into him, realizing what the other wolf had said now. "I'm Cody." he replied with a groan, standing up.

A burst of laughter sprang into the air.

"Well! I certainly hope it's a rabbit den - wouldn't be very smart to stumble over a badger's, now would it?"

The scent he had followed earlier that day became a little more steady with each leap and bound; and just like that he skid to a stop, swinging his nose to the forest floor again. There could only be so many place where a rabbit could hide, and he'd find each and every one of them if that was what it took.

He jerked forward when he heard Cody tumble, and shot a look over his shoulder; his vulpine grin soon followed.

"Your plan of attack could use some work, otherwise I'm open to squashing our prey," he sing-songed amusedly. "But we'll have to hone those skills later...I don't think we're quite there yet."

But with the scent hanging in the air like morning-time mist, it wouldn't be long before they wrapped their jaws around a juicy meal.
