JERUSALEM (AFP) - Israeli police have given the green light for a gay rally in Jerusalem and for religious Jews to demonstrate on the same day against what they consider an outrage, a spokesman said on Thursday.

"Police decided to allow a march of homosexuals in the centre of Jerusalem which will finish with a party in a public park," Micky Rosenfeld told AFP.

He said police have also authorised a counter-demonstration at the entrance to Jerusalem called for by members of the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community who consider the Gay Pride event an "abomination" to the sanctity of the holy city.

More than 7,000 police officers will be deployed to ensure public security and to avoid disorder next Thursday, the planned day for both the Gay Pride event and the protest, Rosenfeld said.

Late Wednesday, several hundred young religious men demonstrated in the ultra-Orthodox neighbourhood of Mea Shearim against the imminent Gay Pride rally, throwing stones at police and setting fire to rubbish bins.

One police officer was lightly wounded and four demonstrators arrested, Rosenfeld said.

Thoughts? Frankly I feel that it is folly for any jew to complain about someone demanding their rights for being differnet from the mainstream.

...There's another thread on this already; the Torah forbids sexual relations, not homosexuality itself. And I'll leave the technical stuff for those who know more, but please do watch your language and what you say. I'm not lesbian myself, but I heavily support having the right to choose, and there are several gay/bi/lesbian members of this guild; one of my best friends is gay as well. I'm not trying to be rude, as I know everybody is entitled to their own beliefs, but consider this a warning.

And as for the thread, I think Neuf put it very well; I see no reason to object, except to violence.

Well I'm biased off course.. I would like the same rights as anyone else in any country.. Government shouldn't be involved with what happens behind closed doors.. I find that a bit intrusive.

Its ironic that jews have a history of not recieving the proper treatment (slavery, ect..), yet give us a somewhat religious country (Israel), which is becoming more secular... They don't allow certain types of people to have the same rights as anyone else.

I think its been discussed that the only thing the torah is against is the act of penetration.

All other anti-homosexual sentiments was rabbinical sayings.

I am trying to remember what Diva said.. She made a wonderful post on it.. Extreamly intelligent. Who knows, maybe she will grace this topic with her awesome presence as well? biggrin

At this point, I think the aggression that all parties have in this matter are better spent on bigger problems such as the enemies that surround Israel. Whats the point of having rights in a country that doesnt exist? Lets conquer other more important battles first. Hopefully from working together there, the two parties involved would develop a friendship.

Stone throwing, rubbish burning, and gay slander is not what I expect from my fellow Jews...

Makes me sad.

To start this off, I will just say that I am very Pro-Rights. I respect that homosexuals deserve the same things straight people do, however, I understand where the ultra-Orthodox are coming from.

Jerusalem is the Holy City, and there are 2 other towns in Israel that would be much better suited for a march than Jerusalem. I am fine with the march being held in Jerusalem, but you have to look at it from their point of view.

I don't mind if there is a march in the holy city, however, if they do, I just want it to be done tastefully.. I would prefer if it werent overtly sexual at all. Everyone be fully clothed, no cross dressing, ect.

If they show respect to the religion, and to god by dressing respectibly, then I am fine with the march.

I say this because the ones in NY.. well.. they tend to go all out and really flameboyant? I hate flameboyancy.

I'm sure that's the only big problem with it, the chance that it might get roudy. I know there was another one last year, but I don't really know how it ended up.

I'm sure both the Orthodox and the Gays could come to some sort of agreement. I'm also sure that the people marching mean no offense to the Orthodox either.

I don't mind the marching and protesting, as long as it has a purpose, too. Dressing up flamboyantly doesn't count as one for me, no offense. Being respectful is important. blaugh

I agree. There has been a gay pride event in Tel-Aviv for years, why do they want to move it to Jerusalem? Never in a million years would anyone even think of having a gay pride event at Vatican City, so why do they want one in a site that is one of the holiest places on earth, not just to Jews? That's another thing, people haven't thought that maybe Muslims would oppose a gay pride event in the same city as the third holiest site in Islam. I think Muslims on the whole would be more opposed to the idea that Jews would.

As with most Pride events, it's pretty impossible for the entire crowd to leave the theatrics at home.

Yes but it also says you're not supposed to blend fabrics of animals with fabrics of plants. I haven't seen anyone condem me for wearing a cotton/wool flannel jacket.
