Edward Herrmann, the guy who played Richard Gilmore, was always written in as a "Special appearance" in the opening credits.
The man was in 134 episodes, that's only 20 episodes less than Lor and Rory!!!
Yet even in the last episode, he's a "special appearance"
I dont know why, but that has always bothered me.......i mean he was in as many episodes as anyone else, why wasn't he considered an actual member of the cast?
he did more episodes than Michel for goodness sake!

It is probably happened when he was originally hired since he was the most known actor when the show started. He was an Emmy and I believe Tony Award winner when the show began.
It is better than Heather Locklear getting special credit to save all these Aaron Spelling shows.

I found out why. Because he was an established actor before Gilmore Girls (i.e.; certain number of performances in previous projects) in a series he therefore must be listed as a guest appearance. Something to do with with guidlines within the actor's guild. protocol.

it was probably because when the show first started they didn't plan on having him be a steady member of the cast. When he became one they didn't fix the title seq. because that takes a lot of money and time to do.
But yea he does do a lot of stuff outside of Gilmore Girls and was in a movie about communism which he was really good in.
