They planned it... In "montage" they said the paper quit around #173, and the latest one, the death of papes, is numero 173.

I think the 'You-reek-a' clue he'd leave behing would tip SB off to the Poopsmith's involvment.
Mostly likely it was Bubs, so he could sell Strong Bad a new printer and then sell the broken one to either the KOT, Strong Mad, or Homestar.
