My journalism class gave me the idea for a novel. I've been writing it over the course of the past week, and I don't have much done, but I was hoping to get some feedback on the basic premise; if it's good, I'll post the beginning for critique.

Cassandra Denam has been working at a small-town newspaper for four years, and she's finally got a beat- the obituaries. Not exactly the career she'd dreamed of as a little girl. But working the lobster (late) shift one night, she gets a call- it's a tip on a new story. Cass, deciding she's got nothing to lose, goes out to investigae, and what she finds there gives her the perfect oppurtunity to become a star reporter- if it doesn't end up killing her first.

It's peppered with real newspaper lingo, since my teacher was a reporter and knows how a news place runs. The lingo's explained as it's introduced, though, so it shouldn't be too hard to follow. I've got character sketches written out, and the basic plotline for the first three or four chapters. What do you guys think? And I haven't decided if it should be fantasy or criminal investigation yet. I'm leaning towards fantasy just becuase I tend to write it more often.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I like it, I think you should keep it more down to Earth though. So many things that start out real get tripped up by fantasy, it's good and all, but it's relaxing to read more 'real' things evey now and then. Based on the intro, I think it'll turn out great.

I agree. Stories that start out with real life should generally stick to real life, and vis versa.

I like the sound of it, but I think its got definite fantasy potential. It sounds like it would be in a Kelly Armstrong like style to me. If you've never read Kelly Armstrong books you should check them out.

They are
Bitten
Stolen
Dime Store Magic
Industrial Magic
Haunted
Broken
No Humans Involved
Living With the Dead
(and I think I missed one or two near the end)

And in the young adult section:
The Summoning
The Awakening
(more in progress but not out yet)

Mystic White Raven
