I know some of you have MySpace, but I'm not sure if many people know of baby Kaleb's story.

Do watch it, and keep him in your thoughts and prayers.

I'm just pure evil....

Shaking him did stop him from crying...

I know, that's wronger than wrong and I'm going to hell. But that video was annoying.

I will say, though, that a $5000 bond is insane. Why not get the message out that shaking a baby is the equivalent of wailing on an adult with a baseball bat? Since his best hope is a vegetative state--and there's no point in living that way--the sentence should be homicide.

That's really sad... at least he's still alive... are they sure he can't get better?

Awww, Ziiiin. gonk

But I agree with you on the second part of your post.

I mean, the sentence should have been much greater than that. The poor child's life is ruined; he'll never be normal, he'll never experience the joy of living his life to its fullest, all because of a babysitter's temper problems.

All of this on his parents' anniversary.

That just angers me to no end. Where is the justice? C'mon.

@Lorysa: That I really don't know. I would suspect that that's the truth; I mean, I don't think a lot of people live long and healthy lives after being shaken as a baby.

@Tiger: There might be a video on YouTube; he has his own MySpace page/online support group.

I cant imagine the pain they must be in. He isnt much younger then my son. It made me cry it was so heart breaking to see something like that.

It is sad, but... videos like that generally bore me and aren't very effective to anything but a very, very agreeable audience. Not that there's any pro-shaken-baby group or anything, but neutral or apathetic audiences... well... won't bother to look.

kind of makes me want to make a james bond refference, actually... something to do with "Shaken, not stirred"... but that would be wrong... gonk

Yeah, that's my complaint. Especially since I don't think prayer works, there's no point to that video.

Generally, I don't have children as patients (though I'm hoping to get a job at the children's hospital here, part time, while I'm in school), but we also fill meds for a long-term care facility that has pediatrics--kids in comas, with terminal illnesses, paralyzed, stuff like that. I just read an obituary of one of my patients this morning.

Point is, babies die every day. Fetuses die every day, legally, at the behest of their mothers. The answer is not sappy myspace videos, or prayers, or candlelight vigils or refraining from evil, evil dead baby jokes.

The important thing is to recognise the value of human life, period. Whether you're a 7 month-old fetus, a year-old baby in the U.S., a year-old baby in Darfur, some homeless drunk on the street or the Queen of England. Humans are humans. Professional, safe child care should be a RIGHT, not a privilege, and if women can't afford to care for children it's easy to see why they abort them.

Word.

I'm a christian and I don't really believe that prayer works... I mean, god can't answer every prayer, some contradict eachother and such. I think He just kinda watches... But anyway, enough theology, I don't want to bore the evil whoreish atheist. *throws rocks*

Free child-care... That would be wonderful. I wasn't treated right by my babysitter. So yes, professional child-care should be availible to all those who can't afford the cost of daycares.

I do believe that prayer works. It helped my son who was a premie and by some mircle ended up living and I know it helped me live from a car accident that they said I shouldnt have made it. Although I dont think he answers in a way I would like, or may not be as fast as I would like him to be prayer does work. But thats just how I feel. I think it was good of them to post something like this. Maybe someone young child will see it and it will change how there future is. Maybe it will help them be a more patient mother or father. I believe (or at least hope) that some good will come out of it having the video up.

I agree with you, Zin. Recognizing the value of human life is something we can all do, and should do, to prevent these sorts of things happening, including abortion and neglect and abuse.

And I wasn't trying to force my views on anyone; I was just hoping that those of us who believe that prayers are effective when they're from the heart could please pray for that child, and those of you who aren't religious to merely keep him in your thoughts and do whatever it is in your power to make a child's life a little bit better.

I believe that prayer should be accompanied by action; and the action is something we can all take part in, together, regardless of religious beliefs. Which is why this guild exists, right? =D

I just wouldn't trust a babysitter. As a child I was never left with anyone but a relative or close family friend, so it seems strange to me anyway.

It's sad that they need to raise awareness of not shaking babies. . . I would've thought it was common sense.

As far as the bond is concerned - how does that work? The woman who shook Kaleb has to pay the money, or the couple are given it by the government, or what? You'd think the woman would've got a jail sentence, since it's child abuse. Once again, glad I live over here where I haven't heard of anyone getting away with this kind of thing.

As for God, well, maybe God exists, but personally I don't understand why he/she would let this kind of thing happen. I don't see any good reason to make a little boy suffer.

The way I see it, God isn't like a magical genie who grants wishes and is literally perched on a cloud with a telescope and a bucket of dreams and happiness.

I think that God is simply a watching, judging entity. More of a machine, a system, a process of judging the actions of humans and life, if you will.

If God simply made it EASY for everyone, if he made all the rules clear and life cooshy, what would the test be? If he came down every morning on a charriot of fire and vindication, who would be atheist?
