At this rate, the sole on his shoe was going to wear right through. Temporarily holding over on the edge of a picnic table's bench, stashed just out of the sun under the edge of the mess tent's canvas, Jo had peeled the shoe off the wooden stump of a leg and took a moment to examine the sole. They had been conscripted to help rig up canvas, put up new coats of paint - things that he hadn't really expected to take a good deal of running about but had been trouble from the start (besides 'They' wasn't really a functioning term when one half of the They was a four footed animal). Jo eyed Specks sideways over the leather and laces of the shoe.
The mule faced pony, acting more canine than equine, had obviously been spending his down time rolling in the dirt. He had two prominent hand prints on his hindquarters, just the right size for Jo to guess some kid had been patting the ugly little pony on the hind end when he'd been too busy with a paint brush or driving tent stakes to make sure no one got too close.
"You're going to be trouble," Jo informed the pony as he hauled his prosthetic up off the ground and stuffed the shoe back over the rustic shape of the carved foot.
Specks flicked an ear and continued to chomp on the yellows patch of grass he'd found withering in the sun.
He really need to find a place to tie the animal. Sure, the pony wasn't exactly going anywhere - followed him around like some kind of pit bull - but someone was going to get their fingers chomped or stepped on or...
That was just asking for it.

It wasn't that Aemilia was rude, but she was particuarly attentative to her surroundings of late and the glance she caught of a strange creature and a fellow with a stranger leg caught her attention. She hadn't seen this type of animal before, though she knew that an animal this most assuredly was. Halting mid-step, she hesitated a moment before raising a hand to tuck the stray white curl behind her ear and swept towards the little duo.
She didn't recognise the man, which made asking the name of the beast to be somewhat harder. Her obvious ignorance of the world was not something she was altogether comfortable with sharing with the world, but she wanted to learn its name lest she be forced to know it sooner or later when she was less prepared. Approaching, she tentatively reached out toward the animal before thinking better of it and settling her hand on her waist. Introductions should probably start things off, and who knew if the four-legged beastie belonged to this man or was a particular friend of his. Manners won over curiousity, "'ullo. New about?"
Her lips twitched before spreading in a charming grin, shifting the sack of bedding (meant for the tiger cages) on her hip with ease as she studied the man. One of his legs was most definitely different from the other and she wondered if it was anything like Hazina's strange apendage, though she hadn't asked the woman just where the metallic arm had come from in the first place and she didn't know how to go about asking this man either.

Apparently the little animal was rather attentive, caught Aemilia's approach a good deal before either the man or woman really acknowledged one another. Speck's head came halfway up, stubby little ears swiveling in her direction. It was probably the pony's movement more than Aemilia's greeting that brought Jo's attention around from tying to laces on his shoe.
He glanced quickly between the young woman and the pony. "He'll keep out of the way," he assured her suddenly, clearly not immediately picking up on the fact that Aemilia's approach (and question) might be due to simple curiosity and not 'Are you new and thus a total idiot, why do you have a pony running around loose?'
Snorting, Specks dropped his nose back to the patch of grass and finally tore it the rest of the way out of the ground. He promptly migrated to the next patch of ground fodder and set to ignoring both humans utterly and completely, tail swishing away flies in the meantime.

She couldn't help the light startling when the pony swung his head toward her even so slightly. Not that she knew a pony was what it was. The startling caused her hand to dissolve until the grass could be see behind the girl before she caught the light, rubbing her hand on the back of her pants as if to rid herself of something. Brow furrowed as she glanced from the creature to the man, she was concerned that her question went unanswered but decided to persist. Shrugging, she continued as if she'd recieved an answer, "Aye, me as well. Still learning my ways about."
Jumping again as the creature tore the shoots of grass free, she moved to oneside for him before edging around him. The bedding was dropped carelessly on the ground next to the table before she waved a hand toward the expanse of wood, "D'ye mind if I sit?" She tried to keep her expression completely friendly, though her eyes darted toward the beast occasionally. His movements seemed benign, but she was wary of those powerful hind muscles as well as the teeth that seemed quite effective in ripping apart the foliage.

Well s**t. He was sure doing a hell of a job of making himself seem like a guy with a case of the loopies. And had she just gone part see through? Jesus H., he'd been out in the sun for way too long. Swiping the hat off his head, Jo used it to scrub the back of his neck a little self consciously before stuffing it under one arm. "You can sit where you like," he responded, inching over a little on the bench to give her more than enough room to sit. He kept the one leg stretched out, the heel ground into the dirt, and a shot glances toward the pony as the little animal meandered around in a circle nosing at the ground.
Jo's eyes fell on he bag she'd dropped on the ground, roaming past of yawning lip to catch sight of the bedding inside. "Got you working with animals?" he asked suddenly. His gaze skated over at her, squinting unecessarily through the shade. "What kind?"

She pursed her lips slightly in thought as she moved to settle down next to the stranger. Not close enough that it could be deemed an intrusion, but close enough to make conversation easy. She wasn't exactly sure how conversation could possibly continue with such a greeting, and while she continued to keep a wary eye on the unknown fore-legged beastie wandering not far from the duo. A single brow arched gracefully as she tried to judge the level of danger the creature presented without seeming too distracted.
Her mix-matched eyes darted from the animal to the man before looking between him and the bag of bedding. She hadn't remembered what it was she was carrying, but once she had been reminded his question didn't seem too strange. With a soft smile, her gaze returned to him as she nodded, "Aye. Big cats, mostly. Tigers, Lions..." She glanced away, "None of those." She was still hard pressed to find a name for the animal, but she returned her attention to the man once more, "Aemilia Saint Sinclair, by the way. Rather new about, but I don't think I've seen y'just yet."

"Cats huh?" Jo echoed, clearly more in a pleasant-small-talk kind of way, because parroting someone didn't exactly make for meaning conversation. But hell, if it kept the conversation going at all that was some kind of temporarily victory, right? Besides, eventually they'd have to introduce themse-- Yeah, there.
He stuck out his right hand in greeting, palm calloused and fingertips sandpaper tough. "Jo Hinton, a pleasure. Me and the pony just got in recently ourselves." He jerked a thumb briefly in the direction of the small animal trawling around the patchy grass before his attention cut back to Aemilia. "Where'd you come from?" Which, generally, not a question he'd be asking along with introductions but in this place... -- well here, it was kind of a legitimate inquiry.
"You like horses?" And okay that was a little more random, but she kept shooting glances at Specks so he didn't figure it was too out of left field.

Nodding when he echoed her, she smiled broadly and took the offered hand easily. Ha! She'd learned that greeting earlier in the day. You shook the hand, a gentle - though hearty - squeeze and let go. Typical greeting; she'd witnessed as well as experienced it throughout the day. "Nice t'meet you, Mr. Hinton." She glanced apprehensively toward the now identified creature, "And... pony."
Her eyes darted back toward the man as she smiled slowly. He was right; in such a place as Cirque, asking where one hailed from was as normal as speaking of the weather. "A large city. London, 2007, though I've heard it's not the same London as others know." She shrugged, "And what of you?"
When he spoke of another creature, a name she didn't recognize, she frowned. The cat was out of the bag now, so to speak. "Uh, horses?" She shook her head, an embarrassed smile creeping over her features, "I'm afraid where I was kept in the city, I didn't learn the names of the beasties. It wasn't one of their concerns."

"London huh? I hear they're real smart over there - all sorts of damn good machines and stuff." Jo couldn't count how many times his Pa'd told stories about that damned World Fair in '04. Motors and all sorts of things from everywhere, London one of them. Not the same London though. How the hell was that supposed to work?
"All Over The Place, America. 1934," he answered easily enough. Nevermind the fact that it seemed people kept giving him these looks whenever he told them that. He got the feeling that the economy going to s**t wasn't the half the problem either - kind of made him itch between the shoulder blades like he was missing out on some big joke.
But whatever. "Yeah, horses. That's a horse," he explained, motioning deftly to the little animal. "Well, pony, but kind of the same thing. Just smaller." He glanced at her sideways, shifting a little. "Never seen one?" The idea was just kind of...boggling.

"Damn good machines," she echoed, "I've seen my fair share." She only vaguely knew of this place, America. Flitterings of newscasts on her caretaker's television set, not much more, had been her education of the world outside London. She definitely didn't know of this 'All Over The Place' place, and she scrunched her nose briefly in confusion. She'd have to ask Aiden later, as she doubted Hazina would understand much better than she did. Lucky for Jo, Aemilia knew nothing of the economy nor nothing else that would give her cause to look at him strangely, so she merely shrugged in response.
When he mentioned the horses again, her eyes darted toward the pony at his motioning. That was a horse? But he'd just called it a pony. Blinking a few times, she took a moment to process his explanation before a slow smile of understanding claimed her features. Made much better sense. Looking the pony over, she finally let her eyes roam back to Jo, "No, 'fraid not." She shifted uncomfortably, "Haven't seen much other than the big cats. And an elephant!" Beaming proudly at that, she pulled at a curl nonchalantly. Aiden had informed her of that creature the other day; as well as a rabbit, but she hadn't seen one of those just yet.

Huh. For someone who'd grown up on a farm, the concept of not having seen a horse was just plain damn weird. Jo eyed her sideways, clearly trying not to make a big deal out of his surprise - trying not to make her uncomfortable. "Elephant, huh?" He'd seen a pair of them in California once where they'd been kept in small rickety looking boxes and you paid fifty cents to look through the windows to take a look.
"Hey, Specks, get your spotted a** over here," he muttered. Jo whistled, short and sharp, and the pony lifted his head and pricked his ears in their direction.
With an air of 'Oh bother, if you insist,' the small pony clopped over in their direction where Jo caught him by the knot on the side of his halter and held him quiet in front of the bench. Jo glanced at Aemilia expectantly. "You want to pet him? He likes his ears scratched."
Specks stamped his little forefoot - smaller than the palm of just about anyone's hand - a little impatiently in the dirt.

She nodded enthusiastically as he spoke of the elephant, fairly bright with her beaming as she stretched her back before speaking, "Oh, aye, a great big gray one with a purple blanket on his back. I only saw him for a moment, though." Frowning, the girl wondered for a moment if all elephants were gray but decided not to draw attention to her falter. Maybe he wouldn't notice, or maybe elephants came in different shades like brown and white. Afterall, she'd only seen one.
Mix-matched eyes roamed inquisitively over to the pony as Jo whistled and the animal reacted accordingly, which she found mildly fascinated. The beast listened! Like a human, nearly, though he didn't speak words in response. When Jo suggested that she pet the creature, her eyes nearly bulged out of her face as her mouth fell slightly agape. Touch it? She'd not touched any of the animals at Cirque yet, told that the big cats were far too dangerous to approach even when she was invisible. "He won't mind?"
Tentatively reaching forward, she kept a wary gaze on the creature's own eyes as she let her fingertips brush his forehead. Gaining courage albeit slowly, she gently let her nails tease the pony's scalp just behind one ear.

Grinning a little crookedly, Jo kept one eye on Aemilia and kept a firm hold on the pony's halter. The girl was entertaining as hell though probably, Jo suspected, not on purpose - it was probably a little mean spirited to derive so much amusement from her cluelessness, but hell he took his kicks where he could get them. "Nah, he won't mind," he assured her as he tucked his fingers under the lines of the pony's halter and let the scratchy pads of his calloused fingers rub circles against the animal's wide cheekbones.
Specks seemed to be happy enough to put up with the attention, even if it meant he didn't get to eat any grass for a few minutes. Besides, people were scratching behind his ears and tickling under his eyes; life wasn't too bad, even if there wasn't any grass. Sighing heavily, the pony poked out his nose and brushed his lips against Aemilia's knee, whiskers tickling over the skin. He sniffed at her briefly, though before he could go about tasting or tugging at her clothes - she probably had treat hidden somewhere in those pockets! - Jo's fingers tightened on the knot on the halter and tugged his head back up.
"Sorry," Jo grunted, clearing his throat heavily. "Little b*****d's an opportunist."

Aemilia was completely oblivious to the fact that her slightly lacking knowledge of the world's creatures was amusing, though she might've cracked an apologetic smile had she been aware of it. She was intelligent, of course, but completely niave to many workings of everyday life but especially to animals. Oh, she understood when a creature was potentially lethal and when it was mostly harmless, but only after wary investigation. The reference from a human certainly helped, but usually she was hesitant about admitting her confusion.
Tucking a curl back behind her ear, the free hand soon swept forward to pat the pony's neck while her fingers roamed behind his ears with gentle persistence when the creature seemed to enjoy the touch. Her smile soon bloomed into a soft bubble of laughter as the beast brushed his lips over her knee, thoroughly enjoying this new experience though she was startled by the sudden tug of the halter.
She was unaware that Specks had been going after anything, though she was able to glean as much from Jo's reaction. Her grin hung on, however, still petting the pony's neck gently as she realised she wasn't giving his human counterpart much conversation, "So... Jo," She inclined her head briefly to oneside, "You work with ponies? Or horses?"

"Uh, all of the above I guess," he answered a little stiffly, tone and features sobering slightly as he distracted himself by running his hands playfully under the lips of the pony, Specks trying to gobble at his fingers or sniff out any peppermints or sugars. "Specks is the only one I've got just now, but I used to do a lot with horses before. Mostly raced 'em and the like, but my Pa had a couple of horses he taught to go up in the air before Ma called him on it. But mostly racing. If you're talking about circus acts though, Specks is the solo act."
He grinned a little then, rubbing his palm up and down the length of the pony's forehead affectionately. "He's a good boy when he's paying attention."
The pony flicked his ears as if to say 'Who, me?' and then continued to bat his lips in Jo and Aemilia's general direction.
Glancing sideways at her, Jo shifted a little where he sat and let his hand drop back to his knee. "You do anything other than watch after tigers?"
