Tokyopop to Import Gothic & Lolita Bible
Tokyopop Editor in Chief Mike Kiley announced at Book Expo America on June 1 that Tokyopop will publish an English edition of Index Communications' Gothic & Lolita Bible fashion book-magazine (or "mook"). The bimonthly square-bound periodical is a reference for this Victorian-influenced fashion movement. Artists from The Rose of Versailles's Riyoko Ikeda to Doll's Mitsukazu Mihara have drawn its covers. Tokyopop plans to debut its version in a "hybrid format" in early 2008. Source: Publishers Weekly

I'm hoping that they translate the GL bibles and thats it, and not take anything out of it at all. I just want to be able to read the information, and I'm not really interested in anything being added to them. I do wonder if it will cost more than the original Japanese ones...hopefully not...

I do not like the idea of a fashion magazine sitting next to comic books.
Maybe that's just me but I can almost see nothing good comming from this "hybrid format" of the lolita bible. If you are really dedicated to the bible, you'll already have them in japanese.

Meh. I like the convenience of it, but still. I know some pervy idiot is going to come along, and go:
"CUTE GIRLS IN FRILLY DRESSES? LYKE, MOAR PLZ!" and totally disregard the actual style.
Next thing you know, lolita will be "the new thing" and it'll be slutified and mass-produced to the general public.

Maybe that's just me but I can almost see nothing good comming from this "hybrid format" of the lolita bible. If you are really dedicated to the bible, you'll already have them in japanese. In all the stores where you can buy them that I've seen, that's where they are anyway, with the "weird Japanese stuff". I can see this being good for those who can't read Japanese, easier for those who can, but it also could be, as Mizer Manakins said, end up as a strange sort of soft-porn...

Nick Magazine did an interview with an American guy who worked there, and he said Otaku meant you liked manga.
I lol'd, then I was upset.
They're going to ruin it, I swear.

I mean, sure I have a hard time making out some of the japanese, but I think making them english will make the Bible directed towards the wrong crowd, possibly.

Not as many as negative comments but there are still some people that are excited or optimistic about it. on the lj egl community someone posted a response to an e-mail they sent to tokyopop and it sounded like tokyopop was planning on keeping the information in the book accurate. The idea of it being near comic books is kind of worrisome but I think if the information is accurate, the people who read it won't be otaloli. really ^^;; I think this could result in less otaloli as long as the information is good and really blunt, some of the first few articles should be about what lolita is and isn't. It sounded like they were looking for english lolitas to submit articles and pictures and patterns so... if you guys are so worried then maybe write something for it yourself? :3

They're going to ruin it, I swear. The thing is, that IS what it means in western countries. Otaku is generally accepted as a term for anime fan. We all know that it's much more derogatory in Japan, but nevertheless many westerners have taken to referring to anime fans as it. Otakon anyone? And then you have manga like genshiken that use the word otaku for anime fans as well. So yeah, of course otaku doesn't JUST mean anime fan in Japan, but you kinda have to accept that it has a much different meaning in the U.S. Words can mean different things in different countries. And besides, it was Nick Magazine, you can't really expect the guy to explain otaku's japanese meaning, it's a kids magazine and I really don't think the people making it want to write about japanese men that stay inside their house all the time, generally being totally obsessed with anime or some other fandom, and they fall asleep hugging their sailor moon body pillow every night. That's not exactly the kind of image we want Americans to have of anime fans.

I understand that, it's just... They sounded misleading to me. I assumed they would lead to a bunch of 11-year-old girls going "lol hi lookin 4 otaku freinds" but I probably overreacted.
My friend saw an otaku man on the subway once.
...Because I'm not myself, you see.
