Välkomna!Welcome! Welcome! I thought I could start teaching some Swedish in this thread, since some people here wants to learn it. I thought I might start of with some facts and history about the language and then move on to teaching the language itself. Svenska - Swedish What’s Swedish?Swedish is spoken by about 9 million people in Sweden, the Aland Islands and Finland. It’s the first language of Sweden and the Aland Islands and official language in Finland, together with Finnish. Swedish is a Germanic language and is part of the same language family as English, Norwegian, Dutch etc. Swedish is closely related to Norwegian and Danish. It’s said that people speaking one of these languages are able to understand the other two, but believe me, that is not true. Okay, speaking generally, there might be a point in it, but I think it’s very personal, actually. As a fluent speaker of Swedish from the East coast of Sweden I have no trouble at all understanding and sometimes even speaking Norwegian (trust me, it is not pleasant to hear), but when it comes to Danish I’m screwed. How is it even possible to communicate in that language!? xd Nah, I’m just kidding, it’s a nice tongue, isn’t it? ^^ To the point now, people from the Southern Sweden do get along with Danish pretty well, but not as well with Norwegian. Like I said, it depends on who you are and where you live. HistoryThis is a brief history of the Swedish language. About 1000-1100 years ago, Old Norse, the language spoken by Viking tribes in Scandinavia, started to split up into several languages. One of these languages, spoken in what was about to turn into the country of Sweden, became what we today call Swedish. In the Middle Ages, when Christianity just had arrived from Europe, Swedish got heavily influenced by Latin, since the church got a lot of power. This happened to many other European languages as well, so it’s nothing unique to Swedish. At about the same time, Swedish got a lot of vocabulary from German, thanks to trading around the Baltic Sea and whatever. Queen Margaret has now united Sweden, Norway and Denmark into the Kalmar Union. After the Swedish Empire had fallen, Sweden welcomed French culture and the French language had a huge influence on Swedish. Today we’re mostly influenced by English, because of Internet and stuff. Enough history now, I’m tired. >.< Hope you have enjoyed it so far, more will certainly come! If you have any questions, please post them and I'll try to answer. smile Good night!

I'm very interested in learning Swedish. (Been studying Danish for well over a year now, actually, but I've wanted to learn Swedish and perhaps Norwegian as well for a while.)
Um... Since I know Danish fairly well, will that make Swedish much easier? (I've done a little Swedish on Rosetta Stone, and it doesn't seem to differ too much from Danish. At least, the basics don't. I can understand most of the Swedish pretty well.)
Not sure if you need to reserve some more posts, or whatnot. If you do, I can delete this post.

The only difference is pronounciation and vocabulary, but you'll get the hang of that too. smile I will not delete your post, because questions are a part of the education as well. 3nodding

I want to hear A Whole New World in Swedish...now that I heard the song again. ninja http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wl-jD-HpipM ninja That song used to be one of my favorite songs. For some reason, they've taken down the Russian versions of all of the Disney(-esque) songs. crying That sucks because the Russian Jasmine had a really fantastic voice. Not as good as the German Nala in Can You Feel the Love Tonight, but still really good. At least I managed to secure an audio copy of Once Upon a December from Anastasia in Russian. heart I've actually translated half of that song into Aquénandi; I ought to translate the rest. ninja [/thread derailing]
