Her nightmares, strangely, had fallen silent that night. No longer did Kidondo's fou form fill her mind, promising the end of the world. Now, instead she saw an army rising from the dunes. Their fur blazed orange under the sun and in their eyes there was a terrible rage. All around them the lands exploded into a terrible blaze, burning everything it touched except for themselves.
Tradition would overcome.
She woke with a start, raising her grizzled head to gaze blearily around her. It took her sleep-muddled mind only a few seconds to realise she was not alone. She could hear breathing and feel a warmth beneath her head where she rested it upon Danzi's great shoulder.
She huffed quietly and shifted it to gaz up into the black-famed face of her lover. Makaa'kali. He as her hope, her one final hope. It had to be destiny that they were drawn together like this. It had to be.
She tried to focus on her middle, on her centre, to try and decide whether their act had filled her with teent-tiny growing cubs. Within her might lay the future of the Firekin and she would guard them well. If they were not yet existant...well, there were a couple more nights to try and bring them to reality.
Though she had to admit she was concerned that her age might have rendered her more infertile than othr lionesses, but she would not give up without trying.
She stretched and raised her head to lick at Danzi's muzzle. "Makaa'kali?" She whispered, almost fearing he was a dream and she would wake up to find herself alone.

Though it seemed it had been years, Danzi dreamt of the same lion as he had when just a young cub, imposing and dark and lankier than he was. Vibrant green eyes flashed above a maniacle grin as a sinister voice hissed "Become like me, my son... It is your destiny." Though he resisted, the lion seemed ever-present. He was a cub again, hiding in a ball against the dark lion as it crooned at him, whispering promises of a throne he knew wasn't his by right. With a start, the male woke up, eyes wide as he looked around.
A dream.. It'd only been a dream... Ears flicking, he realised he was in a cave not in the Pridelands very quickly, and an instant later he remembered where he was. Steadying his breathing, he sat up, tilting to the call of the lioness. It didn't take him long to remember his chosen identity while running around the desert. "I am here." He smiled, relaxing as the dream fled from his mind. "I haven't snuck away in the night. I don't make it a habbit to walk the desert in the dark."

"So your mother was wise enough to teach you that much. The desert is a fickle place at night." Ripuka continued, resting her head against his shoulder again. For the first time in a long time Ripuka was very much at ease, very much. Now in the darkness of this cave she felt like she could fall out of her 'grouchy storyteller' rank and slip into something else.
Something far more loving.
She had felt a little of her past that night, felt young again and it had brought her incredible joy. She knew Makaa would be leaving but she could not bring herself to think about that just yet.
"Last night..." She trailed off. "Last night you made me feel young again." And with that she rolled onto her stomach and pushed against his side with her big forepaws, trying to roll him onto his back. "And let me tell you Maka'kali. If you had not been a firekin I would have been tearing out your throat than allowing you to hold yourself over me." She smiled. "Is this why you returned? To mate with a Firekin and spread the tale through the rogues?" Oh she hoped not. Had she just become the focus of a joke?

"Of course. Even though it wasn't these wonderful sands, I still grew up in a desert of sorts." Laying down, he rolled onto his side a bit. "We both feel young again, then." He wouldn't lie, there was some gray beginning to show in his dark black mane. As he inhaled the mixed scent of the sand and the lioness, he couldn't help the smile on his maw. He hid, though, the touch of fear that tickled his insides at Ripuka's words. No, he wasn't just a rogue... But still not Firekin. But he wasn't admitting that. "I returned.. To help the pride. But I wander to keep it in every pride's mind that the Firekin still exist." His face took on a snarling grin at the thought as he stretched out on his back, tail curling. No... They wouldn't forget.

"The desert is a perfect and beautiful place to grow up in. So wild, so free and untameable. Just like her. She purred, hooked her head up beneath the curve of his proud chin and wished this moment could last forever.
"You will carry our name with honour and if my belly swells with your children then I shall teach them of your wisdom." She nuzzled him and licked his nose. "If we were younger I would have taken you as my mate and I would have shown your bright pelt off to the others like a trophy. You burn with the true fire of our kind. I hope our young ones bear your orange-red." She leaned into him, pressing herself against his belly.
Yes he was a fine male. She tried to imagine him in his youth and felt her heart race. She wanted to beg him to stay but couldn't bring herself to do it.
"Finar-si will look kindly on you forever more, my Makaa and so will I." She twitched her tail slowly. "Will you be leaving soon?"

A deep purr rumbled in Danzi's chest, expressing his pleasant feeling. The thought of cubs, running around the desert and bearing his bright orange coat, filled him with a giddy feeling. A part of him wanted to stick around and see them born, but he knew it wouldn't be too grand an idea. He decided right then that he'd return again, to see them. One, two, six, it didn't matter to him how many it was. The thought of his line continuing further made him smile.
Flicking an ear in his inky black mane, Danzi looked over at the lioness. "Not quite yet... I wish to let the moment stretch a bit." A smile graced his maw as he gently licked her cheek. "Though the desert and the world beyond beccons me strongly, this is one of those moments in life one does not wish to spoil just yet."

"I am glad..." She whispered into his fur, thinking herself silly to be acting this way. She was a mature lioness but here she was acting like a young teenager, flirting and mating with a male she hardly knew. She puffed a breath of warm air out onto his shoulder and sighed.
"I wish to thank you Makaa. Thank you for reviving my hope, my life and fixing my poor broken spirit. Seeing this pride evolve and shift into something tainted had all but destroyed me. But now I see that even in these dark times some good can come of it. Your name will be printed in history, you will be regarded as a savour."
And I, Ripuka thought to herself, was the saviour's mate.
She regarded him through her one good eye and shifted to curl up against his stomach. "Let us stay here a while longer then. Just...a little longer."

The male let another rumbling purr out, continuing to enjoy the moment. Him, a saviour... He made his mind up, then and there, that he'd return to the pride some day in the future and forever bear the name of Maka'kali. It made him feel a bit more important than his normal life, where he wasn't one in a thousand.
Danzi remained with Ripuka for some hours into the day before he made his heartfelt departure. He would miss her, and wished he could stay and see her belly swell with new life. But it was dangerous for him, and especially for her. Who knew what dangers would arise to face her if anybody found out. It was for the best, he told himself. The shifting sands covered up his paw prints, the only signs that the rust-orange lion with the silky black mane had been there.
