So... off-the-chest time! Posters be warned: I really don't want to know who you prefer. (Atleast, that's not the purpose of this threadXD)

It seems like I cannot escape the comparison. Wherever I go, the moment Oomph is brought up, someone feels the need to say, "Yeah, they're great, but Rammstein's better!" Which irks the hell out of me. I mean, it even annoys me when they say, "I love these guys! So much better than Rammstein!" They sound completely, 100% different to me, so I can't imagine why they must be compared. People often bring up that Oomph inspired Rammstein, but who cares? This is the music industry, they all inspire eachother! Dero listed a Beatles album as one of his must-haves, but I've never seen anyone compare Augen Auf to Hard Day's Night. All I can see to connect them is a rough-approximate genre (Oomph defies genre whee ), and the fact that they're *Dramatic sigh* German. /rant

So what do you think? Why is it that people are compelled to compare the two? Among my personal ideas:

1) people discover Oomph through Rammstein and want to show their loyalty to the latter

2) they think that "German" is a genre rolleyes

3) they think Rammstein is the shining pillar of German music, against which all others must be measured (possibley a sub-set of 2) and

4) they think name-dropping Rammstein will make them look "hard-core" and educated in the ways of German music. Ugh, ugh, ugh, and quadruple ugh.

Anyway! Thoughts biggrin

P.S. Totally apologize if this is a repeat thread/abused topic/in the wrong spot.

Hmn... I've got no idea why people do compare Rammstein with Oomph! ...

It could really be the fact that Oomph! inspired Rammstein, but me as a german one don't know how people are talking about them in other countries.

Both got a long time in the music business behind them... Rammstein not so long like Oomph! but Rammstein was always more famous than Oomph! to the day when Augen Auf go straight to place one in the charts.

But when I really think about it, I really got no idea for this couple O_o"

I agree with the "people think German's a genre". For example, if you look up any fanpages for any German band on Myspace, under "sounds like" will be "Rammstein". And if you're on Youtube, watching a German music video, someone will be sure to have left a comment "They're good, but Rammstein's better" or "Waay better than Rammstein!"

Let's face it, Rammstein is pretty much the only popular German music band in Amerika. I've seen a slot for Einzerstunde Neubauten cds at Best Buy before, but they never replenish the stock. But the Rammstein slot is always full. Rammstein has merchandise in Hot Topic. Rammstein is the only German band most people know, so they judge everything else German against it. (Hence your point #3) Whether the person likes Rammstein or hates them, they will judge all German against them.

I myself am an obsessive Rammstein fan. I have their poster on the back of my bedroom door and I have been known to kiss Richard's cheek when I need good luck for the day. (I probably just shared too much, didn't I? confused ) But I'm also a hardcore OOMPH! fan. I don't compare the two because like you said, they are drastically different. Early Rammstein may have like early OOMPH! but that's about it.

1) people discover Oomph through Rammstein and want to show their loyalty to the latter

Well, this is true, as i did, but they are both amazing in different ways, i'm loyal to rammstein, as thats a good thing about their fans, but i don't write everything else off!

2) they think that "German" is a genre

This is so ******** retarded, It's Industrial Metal!!! oder Tanz-metall, but yeah razz

3) they think Rammstein is the shining pillar of German music, against which all others must be measured (possibley a sub-set of 2)

bollocks as well, there is amazing german bands, and rammstein are my joint favourite with OOMPH! and Hanzel und Gretyl, but the rest stil rules.

4) they think name-dropping Rammstein will make them look "hard-core" and educated in the ways of German music. Ugh, ugh, ugh, and quadruple ugh

HAHA people at my school do that, all of them know i love rammstein and they are like yeah i liek them too, and i'm like what songs? and then they say... sonne... which is the only ******** song they play over here in england... which pisses me off, and what pisses me off even more is that we don't get any oomph! here at all.

i hate england/english (even though i am...) they are so narrow minded! i'm planning to move to europe when i leave univeristy (i'm plannign to do a language there)

And the people in Amerika, it's the same here, in our main shops (usually HMV) rammstein is always full (which isn't a bad thing) and have nothing else. just shitty metal, which isn't even metal but crap emo s**t.

yeah theres my rant.

No-one should compare Rammstein+OOMPH! they are both in differnet ways, they complement each other actually. i think they should do a world tour together... and havee Hanzel und Gretyl Supporting.

Ditto Kanada.. but with Tokio Hotel too. Ughh. I actually told one of my other friends about Oomph!, and he said, oh yeah, like Rammstein..No! Not like Rammstein! It does annoy me that Rammstein and Tokio Hotel are the only popular German bands over here, and no one bothers to think, "hey.. NA's got lots of music genres.. why not Germany?" I am sure that people here might be a bit offended if someone from Europe thought 'English' or 'American' was a music genre.

They both bring their own feel to each and every song. Truthfully, I find it impossible to compare the two. So many similarities and yet so many differences.
