One of the local (big, rich, posh) highschools here recently put on a production of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. And I really enjoyed it. Great sets, great costumes, great music and great story.
I think it'd be a really good show to see done professionally, and I was wondering, any of you guys seen it? Any fans? biggrin

Hugging the blade, waiting the years
[It's only my FAVORITE MUSICAL EVAR. I love it so much. I saw a highschool production and I bought the DVD with Angela Lansbury and George Hearn. x3]

It's my favorite Sondheim show, and possibly my favorite show period. The story is just so heart-wrenchingly tragic and bizarre, not to mention the music which is...too awesome for words.

I work at a movie theater and people all the time are like "Oh, cool, Johnny Depp is in another Tim Burton movie. I wonder what it's about." And naturally, I reply with "It's a musical." Then they go "Oh, nevermind." And I quickly swoop in with "It's about murder. It's pretty much one of the best musicals in the world."

When I was a young musical theater enthusiast (like...eleven or twelve), flipping through the soundtracks section of the Wallingford Library, the cover of the Sweeney Todd OCR freaked me out so much that I didn't even think of listening to it for years. In fact, it wasn't until I went through my Everything*Sondheim phase when I was fifteen (I think), and I watched the video of it. And of course I felt silly for avoiding it for so long. Y'know, it took me even longer to get over my fear of the cover of Follies, actually. That, and the fact that everyone kept calling it "truncated" and that just put such a stigma on it for me. But when the book "Anything Was Possible" came out, I read it, and then I had to listen to the OCR, and I fell in love, for serious. Just a side note, but my name is Joanna. No one ever sings the pop song to me, but I *have* had a couple of peole serenade me with "Johanna" from Sweeney Todd. How weird is that?

1 - The what the heck scene is most definitely "By The Sea" when they 'warm their bones on the esplinade.' 2 - The boobs are a must. If you ever see the John Doyle revival, Mrs. Lovett's boobs are practically on parade for the entire second act. I saw a lot more of Patti LuPone than was necessary, since she leaned over the audience with a flashlight and I was in the 4th row.

After seeing the trailer, Depp sounds way too much like Jack Sparrow to me. However, I am getting only more and more excited about Alan Rickman, and I have decided to give Helena Bonham Carter a chance before I decide I completely dislike her.

Here is the first *good* quality bit of Epiphany by Johnny Depp (with a little bit of the movie shown too). http://myspacetv.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=22328992Good thing I haven't deleted my myspace yet (someday, though). I personally can live with the style that he sings it in, but I much prefer Len Cariou and especially Michael Cerveris to that. There are also some crappy recordings of My Friends and the Johanna Trio floating around on youtube, which proves that the Anthony and Beggar Woman are going to be excellent. However, the tiny bit I heard of Helena Bonham Carter makes me very angry (way too breathy). At least she gets the "if only that razor in your hands was my ample breasts" look down in the myspace clip.

There's our Anthony.
He looks waaay young, but it looks to me like he's got just the right amount of ditziness for the role.
I refuse to watch any of the leaked scenes before I see the movie, so sorry if everybody's already seen him.

I mean, let's be honest... Even in the very few clips we've seen him sing in, Depp is making first year voice student mistakes and a lot of them. Now, on Epiphany, the "yelling at the audience" acting is really good, but when he switches to singing? Well... ouch. I want to hear a full song before I condemn him for that and I'm clearly going to see the movie anyway because damned if I'm going to let a movie musical fail when I can contribute my 7 bucks to them making more.
