This is a forum that will be used for the historians here who enjoy using secondary sources to read about their favorite wars, battles, people, and eras in general in Greek and Roman history; due to this, I felt it would be wise to start up a preliminary thread which makes recommendations on a broad number of topics and move into specifics later. I'll be attempting to loosely go from most broad topic to most specific when I make these recommendations. No, I haven't read most of this material, but it all comes highly recommended by reviewers and reliable sources.....and my thus far excellent intuition. If anyone has any complaints about some of the material listed, let me know, as that sort of thing is important for everyone before they go buying something..or waste time reading trash after taking it out of a library. Note that some of the material is controversial.

For the record, I left out texts on religion and comparative cultural studies for the most part, for a later time and possibly a later forum (and because we have a forum for mythology already).

In any case, I'll start with Greek and then Roman material (in theory, some will involve both).

Greek (and related):

Egypt, Greece, and Rome: Civilizations in the Ancient Mediterranean
The Classical World: An Epic History from Homer to Hadrian
The Oxford History of Greece and the Hellenistic World
The Greeks
The Greek Achievement: The Foundation of the Western World
Ancient Greece: From Prehistoric to Hellenistic Times
A History of the Greek City States, 700-338 B. C.
Alexander to Actium: The Historical Evolution of the Hellenistic Age
Religion In Hellenistic Athens
The Greco-Persian Wars
A War Like No Others: How the Athenians and Spartans Fought the Peloponnesian War
Thermopylae: The Battle for the West

Roman:

The Oxford History of the Roman World
The Fall of the Roman Empire: A New History of Rome and the Barbarians
The Gods of Ancient Rome: Religion in Everyday Life from Archaic to Imperial Times
Nero's Killing Machine: The True Story of Rome's Remarkable 14th Legion
The Battle That Stopped Rome: Emperor Augustus, Arminius, and the Slaughter of the Legions in the Teutoburg Forest
Caesar: Life of a Colossus

I'm sorry in advance if I screwed up any links or anything. If I did, I'll fix them as soon as possible.

here's a site that the profs at my university like us to use. although this summer it came crashing down because someone hacked into it but it's up and running now and better than before. (please excuse the bad spelling it is late and I am now starting to get tired.)
Perseus Project it has a whole pile of different things that relate to Greek history although I believe there is some Roman stuffin there as well it's a great resource site when you need to jump start a project or paper.
