Harij stook lazily at the edge of a slow-moving stream and stared down at himself. His watered-down amber eyes swept over what the stream didn't distort and it took all of his effort not to throw a hoof into the water to distort himself. Stupid as it sounded, Harij imagined himself an ugly soquili. The water made his markings bleed and since that was the only "mirror" he had to see what he looked like the intricate henna markings that covered his body melded together like wet mascara.
He'd not met any other Soquilis save for a brief brushing into a stallion named, "Caelen." So in truth he had a home, but til Harij settled more comfortably into this new home he'd just as soon stay away from a bunch of company. Names like Lovey Dovey, Ignacia, and of course, Caelen had been added to his memory for future use. Bah! Self-pity didn't do much good.
Heaving in a great deep breath Harij slowly stood up, his stance of a hard-bitter stallion while his eyes were soft and easy. Time to be goin' home he figured, and soon.

 Ahote galloped along the grassy plains. He leaned his head forward, urging himself to go faster. The little fox in front of him turned and took a glimpse of Ahote before speeding up as well. Ahote giggled, chasing the poor little creature.
"I'll get you!! I'm quick, too, you know!"
But at that moment, the fox dove into a hole in the ground, scurrying into its den, away from the crazy little pony. When Ahote reached the den, he stopped and frowned. The fox had won.
"Well, I'll get you next time!" he yelled into the den.
He turned, looking to see where the chase had brought him. Over to the left was a nice little stream. He was quite thirsty after that run, so he trotted over to the edge of the stream to get a drink.
When he reached the bank, he caught sight of a very elaborate-looking Soquili. He was amazed that he hadn't seen him before he reached the bank, but his colours allowed him to blend in quite well. He stared at the Soquili on the oppsite bank, eyes wide open.
"Wow!!! You're awesome-looking!!!!"

Slowly his posture softened to one that was less threatening, not that the odd little pony across the stream seemed to find him particularly threatening at the moment. Snorting softly Harij cocked his head to the left and continued to stare at the little pony-stallion. As of yet he'd said nothing that made Harij itch to reply.
The little one hadn't seen him and for a good long while he hadn't seen the pony, but boy had he heard him. Exhuberant, yes, that was probably the best word to be used on such an excitable one. Once again moving slowly Harij shook his mane letting the rust and cream braids re-settle more comfortably.
Should he tell what his name was?
Nah.. Unless his name was asked specifically it was of no use.
His own voice didn't get that much exercise save for when he was all alone and the boogie-men in the dark needed to be chased away with a couple softly sung songs, so it'd probably be wise just to crosss the stream now.
Testing the water with one hoof then following with the other Harij crossed the bubbly and cool stream to stand looking down at the other one.
What now?

Ahote smiled and watched as the large stallion crossed the stream. When he reached Ahote's side, he just stood there. The pony found that slightly strange and giggled a little bit. If he wasn't going to intruduce himself, Ahote guessed it was up to him.
"Hiya!!! I'm Ahote! What's your name?"
He meant to look up at the stallion's face, but his eyes were very easily distracted by the other's amazing markings. They were so intricate and beautiful. He had never seen anything like it before!

Harij managed a slight smile as his eyes swept over the little pony that stood so... cockily in front of him? His stance seemed to reak of not being afraid or confused about much. Was that a sign of intelligence or was it a sign of sheer stupidity? Och, and then he started talking.
"My name is Harij."
Lord, was his pelt so ugly that nobody could look into his eyes? Bah! If he had things his way he'd just shave off his stupid coat and not bother with it for as long as possible.

Ahote stood before the stallion, smiling. After he had taken enough of his markings for the time being, he looked up and made eye contact with Harij.
"You look so awesome! I love the markings you have! Did you make them?! Where did they come from?"
He was very excited about this stallion's appearance. The origin of other's markings had always been a point of fascination to Ahote, and this one was a doozy!

Harij had waited with patient silence, as was his usual form or speaking (as in not talking), while the little one examined him. Sometimes he wondered if the reflection in the water lied to him and his coat really was something interesting..
Ahh.. so many question. The little one certainly didn't seemed to show signs of winding down on his constant jabbering. It didn't bother him to be spoken too, it just wasn't in him to mince words freely. Most people probably thought him to be rude. Bah!
"I was born with them on me, I've no idea where they came from." That ought to satisfy the stallion, right? Both answers had been too the point and Harij's deep voice had almost broken once from not being well adjusted to speaking.

Ahote's smile faltered for a split-second. There was no explination for these wonderful markings? Not even a simple, 'I got them from my parents'? Well, that was slightly upsetting. But no matter. Right away, Ahote was ready with more questions.
"Oh, ok. Welll, they're really great! Don't you like them?! Where are you from? I live up in the mountains. I live there with a two-legger and a Soquili named Shikoba. Do you live with any other Soquili?"
It was normal for Ahote to ask a lot of questions, but for some reason, this extravagently marked stallion drew more questions out of him than normal. He just looked so interesting, as though he had tons of stories to tell.

The little one beneath him seemed rather put-out that Harij didn't have more to say on the topic. What was he to say? Some long and drawn out story about how the lord had smiled down upon him and hence the markings had come to him as a gift? That would just sound hokey...
Oh great.. The little one continued to question him. Wait, was it really proper for him to be calling the stallion little? In theory Harij could just be freakishly large. Frowning for a moment he recalled, Ahote.. yes.. Ahote the jabber-box.
Okay.. it wouldn't kill him to answer a couple more questions, "I doesn't matter if I like them, and no clue, and no I don't." Hm.. his voice worked much more fluidly after the second string of words.. Peachy-keen.

Ahote was even more upset at the stallion's short and blunt responses. Obviously, he had no conversational tactics, and wasn't very social at all. Well, that just wouldn't do at all. Ahote was a very talkative little pony, and he liked to hold two-sided conversations. He wasn't one to talk just to hear his own voice. So maybe he could help this stallion with his social skills a bit.
"Well, I think it matters if you like them or not! I don't imagine you'd be very happy if you didn't like the way you looked."
He'd start out slow. He'd have to restrain himself from asking too many questions at one time. Sometimes that was overwhelming, and maybe that was why Harij seemed so uncomfortable speaking to him.

Harij used all of this rather abundant self-control not to roll his eyes. He liked being around others, really he did, but more of in a sit-back and watch what everybody else was doing. No, he knew he'd never be the life of the party but that also meant he'd never be the death of it. Being overly loud, ruining fun, or just plain being obnoxious were bolded and circled on Harij's pet-peeves.. So he avoided doing those things himself.
.. How could he like what he looked like? Did nobody see how runny the markings on him were? Everytime he tried to examine himself his eyes went all funny and made him blurr up. But then too most things that were too close to him blurred a bit. Funny vision, right?
Okay, I'll just push myself to be outgoing and Ahote will be contented for a bit with the amount of speaking I'm getting out of myself.. the little pep-talk almost made the calm amber eyes roll. That would be true when hell froze over, ".. Thank you?"

Harij's response sounded more like a question. This sure was a strange stallion, wasn't it? Ahote tilted his head to the side, a little confused about what to say next.
Well, obviously this stallion didn't really like the way he looked. But why? Had he not seen himself? It was amazing!
"Well, what don't you like about your appearance?"
There had to be a reason, right? He couldn't just not like it just because.

Well, so far the conversation was going pretty okay if Harij did think-so himself. He could've said-so, but his own brain did really like to voice things that much or very often. Propping up a foot, Harij looked down at Ahote and waited. More talking would start soon. He just knew it.
What was the obsession with his markings? To him he thought he looked like somebody had taken a bucket of water and dumped it on him, making the lines run together...
"I've no quelms with my appearance."
Harij even cracked a smile, this talking to people thing was getting easier and easier. Even if he ought to have a paper-bag over his head.

Ahote tilted his head to the side again. This stallion sure did speak weird. But no worries. Ahote soon smiled again as he saw Harij smile. Well, maybe this was going somewhere!
"So where are you from? Have you always been here? See, because I've been here my whole life, but there's this other Soquili I know, named Shikoba, and he said he just showed up here one day, and he doesn't remember where he came from. I think he might be lying. I mean, how can you not know where you came from?"
Ahote had obviously forgotten that he was going to take the conversation slowly. It was just so hard for him to control all these questions he constantly had bubbling up inside him.

When the little pony canted his head, Harij followed suit. Part of him had always mimicked the behaviors of others even if on a subconscious level. Learning how to blend in, or just new things that were fun to do made life.. well.. fun. Doing it without being the center of attention? Not so easy.
"I do not know, and I think so." Where HAD he come from? Aely had called his markings magic from the Soquili gods, he had called them weird. Once someone had said the word "Spirited" to him.. what the heck did that mean precisely? Before Harij realized what he was doing, a slow rolling chuckle escaped for a few moment, "It is simple. If the memory is gone then you do not know."
A gold-star day. A smile, a laugh, and a complete sentance. Harij felt himself puff up with a bit of pride. Eventually he'd be willing to talk to others more freely. What if others were boring?
