Kiefer leaned up against a tree. It was late, and he just didn't feel like sleeping. Well, also he couldn't get to sleep. It was too nice of a night. The sky was full with stars, cloudless, and the moon lay full in it. Even the temperature was nice, properly cool enough, but not cold.

He yawned, and streched. Despite the unwillingnes to sleep, he was tired. Quite a dillema, really. He picked himself up, walking slowly acorss the feild over to the nearby pond. "Wake myself up a bit" he mumbled, taking a deep drink from the pond. The water was cool like the night air.

Kiefer flicked his medium length tail back and forth, wondering if anyone else was up at this hour. He knew that some soquili must be nocternal, but he didn't fancy meeting one. Were there any other odd ones that just simply didn't feel like sleeping on such a nice night, or was he the only one? Ah, whatever. The freedom to do what he wanted when he wanted felt nice, although he knew tomorrow he wouldn't be too happy about his all-nighter.

Ahote also had trouble sleeping that night. The little pony loved wandering around in the cool night air, and whenever a beautiful night like this came around, sleep completely eluded him.
So now he was out and about, trotting across the vast lands of the Soquili. He doubted that he would meet anybody tonight. After all, it was quite late, but his little body just wouldn't let him sleep tonight.
His dark colours allowed him to blend in quite well with the darkness, so even if there were other Soquili out tonight, he doubted that they would be able to see him very easily.
As he trotted on, he slowly approached a small pond. Perhaps he could go for a swim, or just sit on the banks in the cool night.

Kiefer sat down on the grass just behond the bank, not wanting to get covered in sand, because that would just be uncomfortable. His bright golden coat shone pretty brightly with the moon's reflection. That was one thing about Kiefer, he very rarely blended in with anything. Maybe dried grass, but even then his sheen stuck out from it all.

His ears perked up. Did he hear someone comming? The stallion wasn't one to be paranoid, or scared, so he didn't jump. Kiefer looked around, it was probubly just some little creature that he scared away. He didn't see anything, at least, he didn't see another soquili. Kiefer scanned the horizon for their large shapes, but saw nothing.

Oh well, it must have been his imagination, or a little animal. Either way, it didn't matter to him. He yawned, trying to stay awake. It was certainly getting harder. But he didn't want to sleep, particularly not right here. He would feel like a big idiot just passing out in the middle of a feild like that.

As Ahote approached the pond, he caught sight of something shining in the moonlight. It looked golden, and Ahote wondered what in the world it could be. He went nearer, trying to be quiet. If it was another animal, he didn't want to scare it off before he could get a good look at it.
As he got close enough to see, he realized that it was a Soquili! He smiled and trotted over to the golden stallion.
"Hey, I didn't think there would be any Soqulil out tonight! Its really late! What's your name? I'm Ahote!"

There was the rustling again! So he wasn't crazy! Kiefer looked around, it seemed to be getting nearer, but he saw nothing. Certainly it MUST be a little creature at this point! Or a foal, although what foal in the right mind would be wandering alone at this hour? He smiled, this was the type of thing he would have done.

Suddenly there was a voice. Kiefer continued to look around. Then, he looked down. Ah, there it was. But what was it? It was about the size of a foal, but a bit chubbier, and seemed to not be one at all. Perhaps a new type of farmiliar he didn't know about?

"Hello there, I'm Kiefer, and you?" he asked, too polite to blurt out his thoughts. Although, maybe this was a soquili. Certainly there were many types, from Kalonas to unicorns. But an extra small one? He had never heard of such a thing!

Ahote giggled.

"I just told you! My name is Ahote! You really are shiny! You look like gold with the moonlight and all!"

He walked around the large stallion, enjoying the different way the moonlight made his coat shine from different angles. He finally reached the front of the stallion again and looked up into his eyes. He had to stand back a little bit so that he didn't hurt his neck craning it up to look at the tall stallion.

"So whatcha doing out here so late? I didn't think I'd see anything except owls out here tonight."

Kiefer raised an eyebrow. Was he dreaming? This was no foal, but it definetly wasn't a stallion either. "Oh, sorry, I'm a bit tired. Nice to meet you, Ahote. I'm Kiefer. And...er...thanks?" he said, unsure how to take such a compliment from the little thing.

He stood, feeling a bit akward to be stared at. Then again, the little guy probubly got a lot of that, although he didn't show any signs of being self concious about his...uniquness at all. In fact, he seemed alot more friendly then a few soquili he had met in the past.

"Oh? Just couldn't sleep, and it is such a nice night" he said, looking up at the mood. "How about you? A bit late for a..." he was about to say 'for a foal to be up', since he was unsure of the soquili's age. "Erm, nevermind" he said, trying to save himself, hoping the creature wouldn't question him.

Ahote did notice the stallion's discomfort with his size. He was probably curious about what exactly he was. He had gotten it many times before, so he was used to it and it didn't offend him one bit.

"I'm an Usida," he giggled. "Bet ya thought I was a foal, didn't ya?"

He chuckled again, and looked up at the moon as well.

"Yeah, sometimes when the weather gets so nice like it is tonight, I just can't sleep, and I have to get up and enjoy the weather. Guess tonight was one of those nights."

He smiled and leaned over, taking a drink of water from the pond.

Kiefer nodded, feeling a bit more comfortable. So he was just another breed of soquili, eh? Very curious, he had never heard of such a thing before. Maybe they were new to this land? It seemed as if his father had seen every type of soquili there was to see. Perhaps his father had met one, and just hadn't found it as interesting as his stories about his run ins with Kalonas and such?

"Oh, no, I didn't. I just..well, yea. Not really a foal...just...I'm not sure, really. Sorry" he said, a bit embaressed that he was so easy to read. Ah, whatever. He didn't care of others could tell how he was feeling, he had no reason to hide it most of the time.

"Yea, I know what you mean" he said, turning his head skyward. Tons of stars littered the sky, like someone had sprinkles millions of tiney diamonds upon a black sheet. "Well, would you like to go swimming or something?"
he asked, looking out at the pond. The water reflected all the stars, like a mini secound sky.

Ahote giggled.

"No reason to be sorry. It happens a lot. I guess there aren't mant other Usida around here. I've only met one. So when you big-sized Soquili see me, most of you think I'm just a little foal."

He smiled as he looked up at the sky as well. He loved the stars. They had always been one of his favourite things in the world around him. They were so pretty and so sparkly, and he loved looking at them. They almost seemed like magic.

He looked at the pond as Keifer suggested going for a swim. He had only recently learned to swim and was somewhat eager to show off his new ability.

"Sure! Kitsune taught me how to swim a little while ago! I'm really good at it already!"

And with that, he took a running jump right into the pond, making a pretty big splash considering his small stature.

Kiefer smiled, happy that it wasn't a big deal at all. He didn't really care when stupid people got angry at him, usually they deserved it. But if someone that was perfectly nice was hurt, it made him feel horrible, particularly if he had caused it.

The stallon was splashed by the Usida, and he grinned. "Oh no you don't!" he yelled, sprinting after him into the pond. The stallion lost his wits a bit, jumping as hard as he could into the water just next to Ahote, causing waves and splashed. He resurfaced, realizing that at his size, a wave like that could send him right under.

"Haha, sorry" he said, not thinking too much of it. His eyes were still closed as he waited for them to dry a bit so he could open them with out stinging. He had no idea weather Ahote had gone under or not.

Ahote had indeed gone under, but only for a little bit. He came back up with a mouthful of water, and spat it all at Keifer.

"Gotcha!!!"

He laughed playfully and kicked his feet, treading water in the small pond. He looked at Keifer, and smiled at how the water made his coat look even shinier.

"How'd you get all gold-like like that? I've never seen a golden Soquili. Are you special or something?"

Ahote had seen many different patterns on many different Soquili. He always wanted to put a reason behind each Soquili's markings. There had to be a reason they looked that way, right? Ahote just didn't relate it to the Soquili's parents, and thought there was something about them that gace them their looks.

Kiefer opened his eyes: the little guy was fine, good. Ah, but he spit water in his face, so he wouldn't be fine for long! Kiefer's feet brushed the bottom, so he jumped up, splashing Ahote more. "That's what YOU get" he said, laughing,

He really had no idea why he was golden. "I got it from my mother. I look exactly like her, except I am a stallion, and she is a mare. My sister Attie has a golden coat as well, while Tahlia has a brown one, like my father" he said, smiling "It doesn't make me special, except that it makes me like my mother"

He looked at the Usida. "What about you? Your coat looks a bit like that of an animal I've seen around here. I don't know it's name, though" said Kiefer, wondering. It seemed fairly common for a soquili's marking to reflect that of an animal, or a two-legger.

Ahote laughed and kicked his feet as he was splashed again. He was obviously shorter than Keifer, so he couldn't stand in the deeper places of the pond. He swam over to a shallower part so he could talk to Keifer without losing his breath from treading water.

At Keifer's question, he looked at himself, a little curious. He had never thought about his own markings. He was always so interested in the markings of other Soquili, that he had paid little attention to his own. And now that he thought about it, he really didn't know. He didn't look like anybody in his family, that was for sure.

"I dunno. I guess I look like this because I'm different. I don't look like my mom, or my dad, or any of my brothers or sisters."

He had definently been the odd one out in the family. When they all decided to leave these lands for another place, Ahote was the only one in his family to decide to stay here. He didn't mind it much. Of course he missed them, but he loved it here.

Kiefer laughed "Well, I don't think everyone has a meaning behind their coat. I think everyone just, you know. Is born how the are" he said, nodding. Kiefer often wondered how he was so lucky as to be born into such a big, good family. He knew countless soquili who's family was long gone, or just never cared for the foal. That wasn't his case at all.

"I look nothing like my sister Tahlia, she hasn't a hint of gold on her. I suppose I do look a bit like Attie, but only because of her golden coat. It has lighter spots on it, though, and not any stripes, like me" he said, looking back at himself. His coat wasn't as shiny anymore, it was more of a dark yellow color now that it was wet, all stuck up against his neck.

Kiefer moved into the shallows as well, water cascading down from his back as he rose from the water. The stallion had completely forgotten that Ahote was so small, and would have to tread water in order to stay afloat where he could easily stand.
