Chapter 1
TABThe night was silent, except for a small pop, the sound of a bubble popping. To mortal ears that is. To any who could see the Others, they heard the dieing screams of a nymph. A woman stood across the street, a young girl who looked to be only 17 or so. She looked almost human, wearing a dress that hugged her body. As for being considered human, she almost looked like a mortal. Almost. Her hair was an unnatural red, so dark as to be considered black. Everything about her was slim, narrow, and angular, though she was filled out as much as she could be while falling into the previous description. Her eyes were almond shaped and a piercing gray-blue flecked with gold, strange and unusual. Her ears poked out of her hair, a delicate point. She was elven and carried herself as such, standing up straight and bearing the air of a queen, and demanding the respect of one. She watched calmly as the arrow passed through the nymph and as she seemed to melt as she hit the ground, the water forming a small bubble and popping, a scream resonating as the bubble burst.
TABKami snapped awake, sitting upright in bed as her breath came in gasps. She calmed herself down, looking at the neon numbers on her clock. Two A.M. She moaned and fell back onto her pillows, her eyes searching for something on the ceiling in the darkness of the room. She had her curtains pulled tight and her door was shut, as usual, so her room was pitch black except for the light projected by the clock. She rolled over on her side, towards the wall, and pulled the blanket over her shoulder. Sighing, she slowly drifted back to sleep, her last thoughts before she fell asleep being about who the nymph had been.
TAB “Kami! Kami! Get up get up get up!” Sadie yelled, running into her sister’s room, flipping on the light, and jumping onto the bed and her annoyed older sister. The girl was only six, and she still acted it.
TAB “Whadya want Sadie?” Kami muttered sleepily, rolling over and blinking at her sister, moving her hand to shield her eyes from the light cast by the ceiling fan, now starting to spin.
TAB “We’re goin to the mall! Mama said we’re leavin in an hour and Tara’s comin with us! We’re gonna find a new dress for me and her, and she said you can look for one for Prom too.” Sadie said, bouncing up and down.
TAB “Okay, okay… just let me up…” she mumbled; only to have the blanket and sheet pulled off her, pulling any warmth away with it. “Has Mom had a shower yet?” she asked her sister with a sigh, sitting up and getting out of bed. She went to hunt down her clothes.
TAB “Yep, she’s been up a while. Hurry up, I wanna leave!” Sadie said, pouting as she sat on Kami’s bed.
TAB “I know, let me get ready. I’ll be downstairs before eleven.” Kami told her sister, glancing at the clock to see that it was only ten. She grabbed her clothes and went into her bathroom and closed the door behind her, stripping off the old t-shirt and shorts before stepping into the shower, letting the hot water wake her up completely and relax her.
TABAbout half an hour later Kami was dressed with her hair wrapped in a towel on her head. She wore jeans and a halter, cut low enough that it wouldn’t be considered trampy but still covering everything. She had smaller hips and an even thinner waist, as well as a flat chest if compared to the “popular” girls at her high school. Her eyes were hazel, constantly changing from green to a grayish blue depending on her mood and what she was wearing. Her hair, when dried, fell to her shoulders and was a dark brown with unnatural red highlights through it.
TABAfter drying her hair and putting on a little makeup she went back to her room, slipping her feet into a pair of flip-flops before grabbing her purse and taking her cell phone and wallet from her backpack and putting them in the purse. She then went downstairs, to be ushered out the door by her sister and her friend Tara, also six.
TABKami sighed before getting in the car, hating to be doomed to the drive to the mall on a Saturday morning with two six-year-olds.
