Chapter 1

TABThe night was silent, except for a small pop, the sound of a bubble popping. To mortal ears that is. To any who could see the Others, they heard the dieing screams of a nymph. A woman stood across the street, a young girl who looked to be only 17 or so. She looked almost human, wearing a dress that hugged her body. As for being considered human, she almost looked like a mortal. Almost. Her hair was an unnatural red, so dark as to be considered black. Everything about her was slim, narrow, and angular, though she was filled out as much as she could be while falling into the previous description. Her eyes were almond shaped and a piercing gray-blue flecked with gold, strange and unusual. Her ears poked out of her hair, a delicate point. She was elven and carried herself as such, standing up straight and bearing the air of a queen, and demanding the respect of one. She watched calmly as the arrow passed through the nymph and as she seemed to melt as she hit the ground, the water forming a small bubble and popping, a scream resonating as the bubble burst.

TABKami snapped awake, sitting upright in bed as her breath came in gasps. She calmed herself down, looking at the neon numbers on her clock. Two A.M. She moaned and fell back onto her pillows, her eyes searching for something on the ceiling in the darkness of the room. She had her curtains pulled tight and her door was shut, as usual, so her room was pitch black except for the light projected by the clock. She rolled over on her side, towards the wall, and pulled the blanket over her shoulder. Sighing, she slowly drifted back to sleep, her last thoughts before she fell asleep being about who the nymph had been.

TAB “Kami! Kami! Get up get up get up!” Sadie yelled, running into her sister’s room, flipping on the light, and jumping onto the bed and her annoyed older sister. The girl was only six, and she still acted it.
TAB “Whadya want Sadie?” Kami muttered sleepily, rolling over and blinking at her sister, moving her hand to shield her eyes from the light cast by the ceiling fan, now starting to spin.
TAB “We’re goin to the mall! Mama said we’re leavin in an hour and Tara’s comin with us! We’re gonna find a new dress for me and her, and she said you can look for one for Prom too.” Sadie said, bouncing up and down.
TAB “Okay, okay… just let me up…” she mumbled; only to have the blanket and sheet pulled off her, pulling any warmth away with it. “Has Mom had a shower yet?” she asked her sister with a sigh, sitting up and getting out of bed. She went to hunt down her clothes.
TAB “Yep, she’s been up a while. Hurry up, I wanna leave!” Sadie said, pouting as she sat on Kami’s bed.
TAB “I know, let me get ready. I’ll be downstairs before eleven.” Kami told her sister, glancing at the clock to see that it was only ten. She grabbed her clothes and went into her bathroom and closed the door behind her, stripping off the old t-shirt and shorts before stepping into the shower, letting the hot water wake her up completely and relax her.
TABAbout half an hour later Kami was dressed with her hair wrapped in a towel on her head. She wore jeans and a halter, cut low enough that it wouldn’t be considered trampy but still covering everything. She had smaller hips and an even thinner waist, as well as a flat chest if compared to the “popular” girls at her high school. Her eyes were hazel, constantly changing from green to a grayish blue depending on her mood and what she was wearing. Her hair, when dried, fell to her shoulders and was a dark brown with unnatural red highlights through it.
TABAfter drying her hair and putting on a little makeup she went back to her room, slipping her feet into a pair of flip-flops before grabbing her purse and taking her cell phone and wallet from her backpack and putting them in the purse. She then went downstairs, to be ushered out the door by her sister and her friend Tara, also six.
TABKami sighed before getting in the car, hating to be doomed to the drive to the mall on a Saturday morning with two six-year-olds.

Chapter 2

TABKami sighed, her arms full of clothes for the two girls. “Mom, can I please go shopping for myself now? I’ll show you everything before I buy it, please can I go?” she begged, bored out of her mind. She’d been here two hours already, following them all over the mall.
TAB “Fine Kami. Call me before you check out, so I can see what you have,” Her mother, Sarah, agreed with a sigh. “But first, go get a cart to put the clothes in and bring it to me,” She added quickly.
TAB “Kay, thanks!” Kami said, hurrying off and bringing the cart back with the clothes in it. “Here ya go, see ya later!” she said happily, running off with her purse bouncing against her side.
TABShe went into a store, one that she loved more than anything. One of the people who worked there, wearing one of the dresses herself, came up to her.
TAB “Do you need any help finding anything?” she asked.
TAB “I’m looking for a Prom dress…” Kami began, before the woman nodded.
TAB “Do you see anything you like? I’ll show you everything that goes with it, and give you my opinion on it,”
TAB “Thank you so much,” Kami said gratefully as she looked around. “Can I try that one on?” she asked, pointing to one dress hanging on the wall. It was a red satin with a black lacy netting over the bodice. The bottom was cut ragged with several layers, like one would picture a faerie dress.
TABThe woman nodded, going and getting it down and taking it to a dressing room. Kami followed her, thanking her and closing the door before getting into it. She looked at herself in the mirror before coming out, not sure she liked it on her.
TAB “Hmm, I think you need something else… Is there anything else you like?” The woman said, motining around the store.

TABHalf an hour later, Kami came out of the dressing room for what felt like the hundredth time. The woman smiled and told Kami to look in the mirror.
TAB “With your hair done, you’ll be beautiful,” She told Kami, who blushed and smiled, turning to see herself in the gown.
TAB “My God Kami, that’s beautiful. How much is it?” her mother asked, coming in the small store with the two girls trailing behind, each holding a bag or two full of clothes.
TABKami smiled, going to change back into her clothes. She came back out a few minutes later, and the clerk showed her all the things that could go with it. They bought several of them, the jewelry and hair pin that went along with the dress.
TAB “Mom, I don’t have any shoes that go with the dress…” Kami ventured, to which her mother sighed but smiled.
TAB “Fine, but you’re paying for half of them,” She agreed. “Go ahead and go to a store, call me and tell me where you are,” She told her, taking the items to the register and handing the woman a credit card.

TABSeveral stores later, Kami found the perfect pair. If she could just find her size, everything would be wonderful. “Finally,” She murmured, smiling as she slid her feet into the heels. She carefully stood up and walked around, spinning around in the strappy heel. She called her mom, telling her what store she was in before walking around and doing a mini-dance type thing in the isle.
TABHer mom came and approved the shoes before Kami bought them, taking the bag from her mom and the bag with the shoes in it. They left for the car, putting the bags in the car. Getting in the front seat, she had to listen to her sister and her friend chat and gossip. Yes, they did gossip even though they were only six.
TAB “Mom, could I go over to Emily’s house tonight? A bunch of friends are going there; it’s Ben’s birthday,” She asked cautiously.
TAB “Who all’s going to be there? And are you spending the night with boys?” her mom asked.
TAB “It’s spend-the-night, but we’re not going to do anything! Oh, and it’s just Ben, Kaitlyn, Eric, Heidi, Emily, Trevor, and Johnny. We’ll all have our cells, and Emily’s parents’ll be there,”
TAB “Fine, but you know the drill. If there alcohol, come home, no sex, no-”
TAB “Mom, I know. You tell me every time,” Kami interrupted, rolling her eyes.
TAB “Don’t give me that young lady,” her mom threatened, glaring at her from the corner of her eyes.
TABKami sighed, turning her head to look out the window so that she could force the image of her contradictory mother out of her head, “Oh well, mothers’ll be mothers…” she thought, sighing softly.
