really? im surpised. whee

its a really cute movie about a clan of shape shifting raccoons waging war against the humans who want to develope their forest into a housing facility in Tama Hills... which is kinda around tokyo?? because of the need for more houses for the tokyo district.

the raccoons are awesomely funny... meh loves them to death... its just kinda sad because while miazaki tells his stories, no matter how fantastic they get, if they start in 'the real world' he always keeps one foot in the real world. and im not gonna spoil it for you if you do see it but b/c i love the coons so much i kinda wish for a ever after ending, except i really dont want one cuz it'd ruin the telling and point of the story and it wouldnt be the same miazaki anymore.

Its typical for most of his work, and has the same [tho maybe moreso for this movie] kind of pro-enviromental shinto-ish philosophy about living in harmony as some of his other movies, but it never gets boring and the characters are adorable.

you should prolly know if you dont already, compared to the rest of the world americas culture is kinda prudish... when miazaki sold his films to disney it was under a no-edit no-change baises... the movies that disney preveiwed saw no problem with this clause until the films were shipped and they watched pom poko, and as a result many of the films were pulled back for 'editing'. this pissed off miazaki and everybody got angry for a while and they kinda went halfsies on it...

so while most people on gaia know foxes and raccoons can shapeshift according to the shinto beliefs, they dont know how exactly according to traditional story telling it happens. By some traditions a males testicles hold the magic of life. this is why theyre arent traditionally female headpreists and why the genitalia of certain endangered animals are hunted and exported in asia. According to the older beliefs the more 'active' animals possessed more of the 'magic of life' in their 'pouches' [ie rabbits raccoons and foxes] so in his movie when all the little furry guys are walking around, their 'pouches' are plainly visable. disney wanted to castrate them and figure out a way to edit that part out, but miazaki refused. they halfed by not castrating the coons but allowing translation to mask the identity of the testicles for younger audiences calling them 'raccoon pouches' which technically is correct, but if your watching the english disney version and you cant figure out whats going on... there ya go.

those are my disclaimers about liking it... i've talked to people who said they hated it and the movie was disgusting... other people i know think its adorable... if the whole coon pouches vs. coon testicles not a problem for you thats awesome ^^ if its something youre not used to... i would recommend watching it in the context of the culture that made it heart ~thats my schpiel... i just put it out there cuz i've had some people get really pissed at me

I never knew about that shapeshifting part. 0.o;; That's cool.
I don't care about the pouches vs. testicles thing, if it's part of the tradition/culture thingamabob. Besides, it's an animal. Being offended by that is like being offended by your friend's unneutered male dog. You just aren't.
Yeah. I like how his stuff is all like promoting enviromentally friendly-ish-ness... How there's not much modern technology and stuff. With his style, the movies wouldn't be as good if they had all the new stuff. Wouldn't seem as cool.
