I've been thinking about this ever since the fourth issue, but some of the main characters resemble shinigami in ways. So I can't help but wonder if when a shinigami dies, if it's reborn as the type of ridiculously intelligent person that we see in L, Near or Mello. Has anyone else suspected this?

I think the religious logic of Death Note leads more towards Christian themes, though there are noticable mixes of other religious beliefes in(IE Shinigami, XD).
We don't really know what happens when a shinigami dies, because they rarely die. Hell, we don't even know what else kills them. Having them being reborn would be interesting, but I think they'd lead their lives as normal humans. :] You can't remember your previous 'life', at any rate.
The entire resembling shinigami thing, I think, is a referance to what happens when a user of the Death Note dies. They're stuck to become a shinigami.
I'm rambling and it's late. I apologize if this doesn't make any sense. xd

I think when they die, they just kinda.. die D:
I wonder if Ryuk was a human at one point.

I would be more inclined to believe that people who used the Death Note, especially those like Light that used it a lot, would become shinigami when they died.

I've thought of drawing Rem and Ryuk in a sort of human form before... It certainly is an interesting idea.
The only other way to kill a Shinigami that we know of, other than making them fall in love with a human and then kill for them, is the whole "levels of agony" thing mentioned when Sidoh's trying to get his note back.
I've wondered at times, if maybe one of the agonies for Shinigami could be to be turned human. That would be pretty bad for them, considering they'd be subject to human needs and desires after never having any, and they'd be able to fall prey to other Shinigami, as well as humans.
I've always kind of accepted the idea of those who used the Death Note becoming Shinigami after they die, even if the series' end contradicts that. As for when Shinigami themselves die... *shrug* Who knows?

That'd be pretty cool, especially if it was true in our world, like say people we knew or even you were once a shinigami. ninja

I just finished a drawing of a girl who's outift was completely based off of Ryuk's. Female human Ryuk, anyone? http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/56360303/
