A Map to the Dead Passed

Group 2:
Fauve
Kasai
Galilee
Zahar

ASSIGNMENT

That fate-full not so long ago when Time was going to announce his daughter, Light’s, engagement to Fire proved to be more devastating than anybody could ever imagine. So devastating, in fact, that even now, hundreds of years later, the colonists of Masquerade are still affected. One of the most disheartening blows has been the loss of memorabilia; most books, letters and photos of the past have been damaged beyond recognition by the weather and the various plants and animals that wandered through the ruins on an almost daily basis.

There is still one hope for the memories of their once great civilization- the catacombs. For centuries, the Masqueradian royals were buried with trinkets from their past ranging from text to photos to inanimate objects. It is the hope of the present colonists that the secrets of their history were well preserved within the dark stone walls of catacombs.

Fauve, Galilee, Kasai and Zahar have been personally selected by Nika to venture into the catacombs via the only entrance – the palace ruins. Their task is to retrieve anything and everything that reveals some information about the history of Masquerade.

The four of them have been given one tent, four sleeping bags, enough non-perishable food to last for a week and equipment to cook it with as well as a roughly sketched map of the catacombs. It is up to the guardians to decide what else their charges are going to need and how, exactly, they are going to travel.

A hint: Weapons for protection would probably be a nice thing to have on this expedition, especially because the Rade (not to mention Scarlette o.O) like to wander around the ruins and the ROUS make their smelly nests in the catacombs. Battles, blood and tension are exciting. ;3

Flashlights are good to. That is, if Fire and Light get tired of glowing. XD

Kasai reached up and scrached the large Kirin behind the ears. Scorch, as Kasai had named him was one of the larger males that had been brought in. He'd broken the male in himself and then claimed him as his own mount. The stallion nipped at the sleeve of Kasai's coat before leaning into the hand the creatures dark eyes getting a slightly dreamy look to them as it enjoys the attention. Kasai let out a mental laugh watching the creature, from the way you try to take off everyone's hand but mine; I doubt most would believe this. Almost as if hearing his rider's taunt the beast shook it's head, the thick black horns swinging as it does. Right that's a sign I need to finish getting things packed up, before you run off out of boredom. Kasai's crimson colored eyes swept quickly over the various harnesses on Scorch's saddle; the makeshift saddles were some contraption of Cinder's and seemed to be doing a fine job.

Kasai then adjusted the packs he had secured to his mount, the camping gear provided by Nika along with some food stuffs for the Kirin if plantlife wasn't readily avaialble; was settled on a Kirin that had been set up as a pack animal. A few silver colored containers were also strapped to her at the moment they were empty but Cinder had sent the water proof cases to carry back the things they were suppose to find. Marigold as she was called was a rather pudgy specimen for a Kirin and even now was working her way to clearing a circle of grass around her as she ate. Pudgy but stout she seemed to have an easy enough going manner that she hopefully wouldn't sprint if it came to trouble. Kasai's packs held various things in them, a few extra sets of clothing, a couple of strange lantern things Cinder had given him; they ran off batteries instead of oil and were fairly lightweight. With a grim look his eyes settled on the WA 2000 strapped to the side of his saddle, the laser rifle wasn't always the best on aim, but it pumped out enough bolts that Kasai hoped that wouldn't be a problem; actually he really hoped he wouldn't have to pull the big weapon out. With his thought on weapons Kasai reached down and touched the heavy laser pistol on his hip; he hadn't carried the weapon for sometime and it felt a little strange to have it now. Cinder had also made him take a long stiletto boot knive and smaller daggers in wrist sheaths from her rather large weaponary collection. And the last gift from his guardian, four black sticks that looked like police batons, however these particular items were charged to send an electric shock against those hit; there are two settings normal and cybrog. Kasai had been warned to be careful with the latter setting since it was possible to nicely fry something less sturdy then a cyborg with it.

Cinder had made sure Kasai was well prepared to maim, stab, and blow up whatever decided to come and try to eat those going on the expedition. She had also made sure that along with the lanterns that they had extra rope and a grappling hook along, along with a flare gun, compass, a rather large heal kit from the escape pod on the Warhammer. Rhys had supplied him with a kit for starting fires, the cooking stuff came with something already but the other boy had wanted to be sure Kasai wouldn't be without if needed; once they had gotten to things for starting fires Kasai had stopped listening and taking things mostly because at that point if he couldn't create a fire for the group then he wouldn't be able to light one either. Kasai narrows his eyes at his bags, even though he'd tried to stop his guardian and her son from supplying him with more items he realized somehow his bags had obtained a collapsable shovel, crowbar made out of some metal that was lighter then iron but seemed as sturdy,a small toolkit, and what appeared to be a sewing kit of some sort. Narrowing his eyes he also saw about five packets of the liquid space rations used for emergencies; he happened to know those things tasted horrible. Kasai just shook his head with a mental sigh looking at the items; at least it looked like they didn't intend to weigh him down - just prepare him for well - anything.

Before Kasai let himself get distracted by cleaning his packs out his attention was turned to behind himself by a nudge on his shoulder. Starting in surprise the fire masque spun, he then indulged in a mental chuckle as he saw the beast that had been trying to get his attention. Fable was another kirin mount from their expedition for such beasts; she had a very light and quiet step which was why Kasai hadn't heard her sneaking up on him. Fable was a dainty little thing light in color with a very mild temperment, one of the reasons he wanted her for Fauve. Reaching up he gives her a good scratching behind the horn before going to make sure her saddle is secure; Fauve hadn't loaded up yet...he was hoping she wouldn't be overpacking for the trip or there might be an ugly scene in which he was forced to lighten the load. Sighing some Kasai turns, leaning against Scorch as he does; seeing the stallion starting to spur his heels up to show off for the mares he takes the reins to his mount in his hand to keep him under control and settles in to wait; munching on a strange orange colored fruit that had recently been discovered as he does.

Fauve marched down to the meeting place with a very determined look on her face. The laughter of her guardian still echoed in the back of her head and she was snarling mad about it. "Oh come on Fauve, they should just leave you here for all the good you'll be", and "Are you kidding? You? Underground? You know there is dirt down there right?" She paused and shouldered the backpack and shifted the slightly smaller duffel bag she was carrying with her. Well the last laugh would be on Merci, Fauve was going to be useful damn it.

She was dressed rather oddly. Her blond hair was pulled back and twisted up under a bandanna, only the odd wisp escaping from beneath the cloth to frame her masked face. She had on a pink tank top, that clung rather nicely to the contours of her teenage body. The khaki pants that stacked around her combat boots were rife with extra pockets, and most of them looked like they had something in them. Waterproof matches, Zippo lighter, a small canister of some odd cream Merci told her would staunch the bleeding of less serious wounds, and other such oddities were tucked out of sight. On her wrist was a rather large dialed watch, that displayed the time and the date. Without the sky to let them know, days could blend together and they could lose track of time, so her guardian had insisted on it.

In a few of her pockets he had luminescent chalking, her chosen had explained that she could use it to mark the walls. The map would be wonderful, however if they were running for their lives for any reason they couldn't stop to confer with a piece of paper. Around her hips was fastened the oddest looking utility belt ever, her fans were holstered at either hip. Behind those were pistols, the type Merci herself usually preferred, their uses wide and varied.

The bags themselves were a different story. Fauve had a small amount of explosives, which she had a lot of practice with considering her sister. A powerless water distiller, extra clothing and blankets, biodegradable soap that didn't need to be rinsed from the body, and other hygiene products. Fauve hated the soap, but she and Merci had used it religiously while in space and she knew it worked. Fauve knew that sometimes being dirty would help with blending in if anything hunted them with smell, but until she knew she was in danger, she wasn't sacrificing her cleanliness.

She also had tucked into every available surface she had in her bags inflatable packing materials. They were being sent after items of antiquity, goodness knew how many of those were about the shred any moment. They were going to be needing to treat them with kid gloves, and packed carefully. If they were placed inside of the little bags, they could be inflated slowly around the items, and help cushion them from any accidents that might occur.

Walking around the last bend she could see Kasai and she couldn't help the smile that turned the corners of her eyes up. At least if she was going to be sent into the bowels of goodness knows only what, it was with him. She could do anything with him there, and she was determined to be more useful then that stupid little prissy princess Zahar.

She was still really upset at the thought of having to spend any sort of time with her. At all....

But, Nika had his reasons, and she trusted the man that had helped raise her and her sister. If he wanted them to go, she would.

She slid past the animals and put the duffel on the ground next to her. Fauve was still not sure about the whole Kirin thing, but they didn't look mean. The blond stood behind Kasai, giving them dubious looks.

Slowly Zahar looked about her room, making certain she hadn't forgotten anything. She had changed into a pair of Kataio's black cargo pants, and a tee shirt as well, hair thrown up in a bun. A dress in the catacombs again was not Zahar's idea of a good plan, especially with loose hair falling about her face. Only packing two bags, one nearly empty the other packed quite full, she was proud of her work so far. There was an extra change of clothes for hot or cold weather, a blanket, her repair kit and a few tools, notebook and pencils, a soft paint brush for fine dust, and also quite a few hand towels (never know when you might need to dry off or to wrap something important). On Zahars body she have buckled her throwing knife belt on, placed her lock picking set in one of her pockets, and slid a seathed stilletto into one of her boots. The stilletto was Kataio's as well but before her gaurdian disappeared with that Aricin guy she had said anything in the house was fair game.

Lifting the bags carefully up she shouldered the heavy bag and held onto the other. Zahar turned out the light in her room and wandered out to the hallway. Still needing to grab the water and non perishable food for the trip she awayed down the stairs smiling away. After her first adventure she was looking forward to the next. Though she was still nervous about going with Kasai and Fauve, she was really glad that Galilee would be coming with her this time.

Turning the corner intot he kitchen she set one of the bags onto the counter and went about tieing the canteens to the sac. Humming happily to herself as she worked. When the canteens were secure she started loading the food into the nearly empty bag. She wasn't too worried about food, knowing that Maverick would be follwing at some distance, being nervous of the other masks, he would find food if they ran out.

Looking out the window to the early day she smiled again turning into the house, lifting the packs again. "Galilee? Gali where are you?" Zahar called into the house following a sound on the main floor.

Galilee had decided that the world was not safe enough for Zahar to be alone at night. It was so easy to break into one of these houses, he had all but told her. Even with Maverick around she felt lonely, still nervous to be around many of the others for longer periods of time. So after thinking it over during her chores she had let him know that if he wanted to stay in the spare room it was available until Kataio came back, and then it was up to Galilee and Kataio to work out living arrangements from there.

She peeked down the hall calling out again, "I am ready to go, I believe. Is there anything else you would like me to grab sweets, I mean... Gali?" Zahar blushed a bit again, still not used to the pet name that sliped out now and again. Fiddling with her knife belt nervously and shifting the bag on her back as she waited.

Galilee had been back at his own home, packing for the trip. He was walking back when he heard Zahar calling, picking up his pace. He walked in and looked at her, then sighed. Stop yelling...had me worried.

He set his ruck sack down, checking the canteens on the side of it. He looked up at her, I packed clothes, blankets, food, sewing kit...um...packed my knives. Some other stuff might be useful. Hope it's all we'll need.
