ok
heres the story
My newest band played its first gig about 3-4 weeks ago, not to blow my own horn but where all pretty killer players, the guitarist is freaking good, and the drummers is really good, just not as solid as he could be, but still aswesomely good.
we play the show, it goes awesome, like, cheers people on stage panties thrown up the works...
we get offered this really really good gig, and the other two dont wanna play it
now maybe its just me, cos i'm a born performer, before music it was acting befor bass it was singing (Still Not Very Good)
but i dont think were in a position to be picky with our gigs, the guitarisy is new to the stage, and i think it would be a great experience for him, but he is just nervous (i think), he thinks were not good enough, but i keep telling him they want us to play.
anyway, we had to turn down the gig cos of the wankheads who dont wanna play it.
but i'm starting to think, can i be in a band with people who turn down good gigs?, i mean our first gig was decent sized, about, 100-200 people there, this one usually has a huge turn out.
its a fireworks celebration night thing on a hige oval, its usually jam packed with people squashed in everywhere
anyway,
WHAT SHOULD I DO?

my band went thru a quick stage like that
just let them know that you guys really need to play most everythign you can get right now
rile them up and what not, get them excited
but yeah, let it slide now, but if they keep doign it, you probably will have to leave, just let them know how you feel.
A band has to communicate after all

Ive never had a problem with turning down gigs... no matter how shitty or good they are... I dont really understand why some one would turn down any gig... I am of no help on this one...

thats what i thought,
i bassically live on stage, and i always wanted to show everyone things i could do
even when i was little and didnt like music
(my mother never got her music played, my brother liked death metal and to a child of 5 thats just noise, and my other brother liked hardcore techno)
my mother and dad actually like good music
but when dads songs started playing, he would sing along, so i always thought ACDC were crap (he had a loud voice, and is tone deaf)
but even then, i was always like, hey hey, look at me, i can do a handstand, and stuff, so its natural for me to want to show off.
speacially seeing as i have no problem performing to a crowd of like, 10,000+ (done it a few times, i'm a gun cool )
anyway, i they think more about themselves, and it may be like i'm doing that cos i'm the only one who wants to play, but its good fo rthe band, publicity, and we get to have fun!
anyway, life stories are fun

ha lucky I wish I could play gigs like that. I like to show off too. some times though my antics make me forget to play bass though usually I can pull it off all right and some one will take a solo or some thing like that. I think you should talk to them and psych em' up a bit and see if that works and if not tell them that you guys really need to play a the gig unless it all ready happened at which point you should tell them that you need to play the next one cuz it will get you known. sweatdrop

yea
i made the guitarist feel guitly, (cos i gto the drummer on my side)
and he cut a deal with me, he knows these globalist people and some crap, so all i have to do, is write a song about global warming,, they record us, put it on there Global Warminf Awarness CD, and we play at the launch, which is only 500 people, but if were liked from that, he says he will play this followup gig that has about 2,000 people, so i guess i'm happy
not as big of a gig, but still a good one
now i just have to write some lyrics, (i'm a whiz with the music, i already got a few riffs lined up to show the band work on and ram in some lyrics)
i'm lyrically challenged though

I know what you mean. Im not good at lyrics but i can write pretty much any other part of a song. i usually have someone else write lyrics. i do the rest. including the guitar and drum parts. i play every instrument that you usually see in a band (Drums, Keyboard, Bass, Guitar, and vocals) usually i have my sister who plays piano write my lyrics. then i put her name on the copyrights after the songs are recorded. its only fair. oh and i dont show my band the parts. i use a program that plays the notes and i write that way. so im able to put the stuff on sheet music yet i cant read mysrlf. its weird but cool

ha yer, i'm getting better at lyrics
like when i'm meant to be doing somehting in school, i'll just start jotting down lyrics, then read them a day or so later and say... not bad
like when before
i looked back and said... thats s**t
and with writing music, i like the rule, simple is better, less is more
but i dont us eit all the time
like,
an instrumental piece, try to make it a fairly difficult piece, but if its what the song calls for,
i'll just play a two note thing with a run in there ocaisionally
cos i play alot of blues
and like rock n roll
so i get to play alot of running bass lines
e.g. straight 8ths
i try to be liked by bands, and play in alot of them, to broaden my playing style, and to learn how to be liked, and how to deal with members
but i'm going to quit from this guitarist
hes so frustrating
