I don't think you can really ready yourself for you first trip to Japan. I'll say this though, approach everything with an open mind, and most importantly respect the Japanese people and the Japanese way of doing things. I imagine you probably will anyway, but I have encountered people over there that try to handle situations and solve problems the western way, and it just doesn't work.

Like Geishaboy said, be polite and respectful, and keep an open mind. Don't be afraid to ask questions, because it will show that you are interested in learning. I would hesitate to tell you more, since your experience will probably be better if you find things out for yourself. Just be a pleasant person, and you shouldn't have any problems. There are etiquette rules (e.g. don't stick your hashi upright in your rice bowl, things like that) posted somewhere up here, I'm sure, and they might be good things to keep in mind, but other than that...go have fun, and tell us about it when you get back. Don't go with expectations, because if they aren't met (and most people don't have entirely realistic expectations, unless they go with none or very few), it can really throw you off.

Also, if you go on a bus, don't sit in the front seats. Those seats are reserved for the elderly and if you sit there it's very disrespectful...Careful! Have fun ^^
