the capitan of the line at my school this year decided that its not fair to those who wish to try out not to be able to try out on anything they want, but he is also making everyone who already made the line try out again. so as of two days ago, the line was hypotheticly disband, and we are "Starting over" with only next years capitan guarentied on the center snare. I agree that it is good to let anyone try out for anything, and if they are good, get them a spot, but having the people who have already proven themselves hardworking, dedicated drummers basically kicked out for some freshman who barely knows how to hit a drum because someone who is already on the line was sick the day of tryouts is a little much. stare **Fumes at the computer**
anyway, i just dont think our Capitan went about tryouts right. so, all you other drum line people, how do your tryouts go?

Why doesnt he just make the sick people try out for him when they get better, and then compare?

For us, everyone except for the captain has to try out each year and our instructor decides where we'll be placed. If you miss the audition day, you get cut unless it is a serious illness or you are on vacation and will come back later. If it is the latter, then depending on how well you did last seaon, you will audition again and the people who auditioned for the spot will be compared.
