Me, being the curious kitty-Jew I am, was wondering (yes, me was wondering) if any of you kindly folk know anything about Kabbalah, and/or any place (beyond wiki) that I can learn more about it myself. Thanks. smile

Have you tried looking in a library?

Tried. Failed to find anything.

I've got a friend with a fairly extensive library of Kabbalah writings, but he's over in Germany for the summer so I can't get in touch with him. sad

Besides in the incredibly basic epithet that it's a "branch of mystical Judaism," I know almost nothing about it. I read a book about a rabbi who believed in it, and the only thing I got out of it was that there was some kind of golem in a story; it was a rather strange book to be honest. Sorry. sweatdrop

Have you tried Googling it?

ninja No, I haven't googled it, yet. I suppose I should.

You can find a wide array of books on it in any Judica section at Barnes and Noble or Borders, if you'd like to read it yourself...but chances are Divash will know a pretty good amount about it.

From what I hear, it sounds like complete crap, but all I've really been presented with is what Madonna does and stuff. With the water, and the braclets. rolleyes

I really wouldn't go by anything any celebrity does in what they consider a fad religion, or practice.

Haha I definitley don't. Or at least try not to. I mean, look at what happened to Britney Spears and her Hebrew tattoo. I still laugh at that.

My grandma told me about these kabbalah tapes she bought and had something about a woman seeing a leprachaun on a table.

After hearing that I kinda got weirded out. xD

"Kuh-balla" is crap -- the Madonna stuff.
"Ka - BA - lah" is not crap, and is a Jewish mystical tradition spanning back to (I think) the 15th century. I think it started in Spain but don't quote me on that.

I bought some helpful books on the subject that were recommended to me but that I haven't had time to read yet (I don't really want to read them in public because I'd be embarrassed if someone thought I was into the celebrity cult built out of this). I do know that if you are serious about it, men are told not to study it until they are 40. That's what I heard from the visiting youth rabbi at the local Orthodox synagogue (though he personally thought it was all crap).

I have this Gershom Scholem book, then I think I have this (I remember the title was the same and it looked like a reprint of an older book, but this may not be what I have) --> Kabbalah Unveiled. The latter one came from one of those hippy-dippy New Age shops (though I have found some good books in those places from time to time). Maybe you can find something from there. Or check your local synagogue, they should have something (though not all rabbis are going to have the same opinion on mysticism, keep that in mind).

I've been told by my Rabbi friend that I shouldn't study it until I'm married, and at least 35. Since I can't find a teacher, I doubt I'll study it until then if only because of the lack of actual information. sad

The meaning behind the tree of life is very intriguing. My sister is interested in Kabbalah, and there is some jewelry website that has information about different symbols from it.

Pretty much anything that you can find on Google or a regular book store is going to be garbage, pop-kabbalah and not the real deal.

Here's how you learn kabbalah, for real.

One: You go to Hebrew school as a child and learn Torah. You must be very diligent in your studies and very pious in your behavior.

Two: You become bar mitzvah at the age of thirteen (a Son of Sacred Obligation) and begin to study the rest of Tanakh (the Hebrew Bible) as well as continuing your studies in Torah. You must be even more diligent and pious, or this is the furthest you'll ever go.

Three: No earlier than the age of forty, often much much later, and even more often not at all, a very learned rabbi may approach you and offer you the chance to learn with him privately. He'll only approach you if he feels that your learning is significant, your piety completely sincere, and your desire and ability to learn more are fueled by an aspiration to live a truly good and holy life, not to satisfy curiosity. It will take years of study, but if you are able to demonstrate what the rabbi is looking to see in you, he'll begin to teach you kabbalah.

You really shouldn't study it without the lack of initial knowledge of the Torah and experience of life in general. Usually after you're 35-40 years old, married, and had a few kids, you're probably ready - though some people never are... Kabbalah is very deep... You should be very careful around it... sweatdrop
