well actually, i'm trying to help my dad here. my dad's taking VHS tapes and putting them on DVDs but it isn't working so well. He's currently using Studio Launcher and something else (can't remember at the moment) and the tapes connect but they come up jumpy.

so my question, why not, is what program should we try using and is it available for free download?

I think we might need more information. For starters, you're saying that y'all are using a piece of software called Studio Launcher, right? It looks like that can only take care of the DVD-burning side of the problem; does it do the video-capture side as well? (If "video capture" you're unaware of, it means to capture video coming into the computer as a movie file on your computer.)

If Studio Launcher only burns a movie file onto a DVD, can you confirm that the old file isn't jumpy?

Now, the only way I could possibly help at this point is if Studio Launcher is just for burning DVDs.

There is a free program that can do video capture called Virtual Dub. (Actually, it's a movie editor, but it has video capture capabilities.) You could always see if that's better (although it has many options and settings which could make it confusing to operate sometimes.)

If Studio Launcher does both the Video Capture and the DVD Burning, I'm not sure what you can do other than try something else. I don't know of any free DVD-movie burning software (which is what I assume y'all want to do) but a possible alternative might be to simply use the DVDs to store the AVI files. Many DVD players also have the ability to play movie files stored on a DVD (mine doesn't. sad )

comenting on what was previously said, the VHS tapes themselves can be pretty unreliable and may cause their importing to be jumpy, chopping, or other problems as such

oh, and in that case, try cleaning the tape, or the taper ( the system obviously requires a vhs player of sorts so try cleaning that with a special cleaning tape/ wash stuff.(i don't exactely know)) if worse comes to worse buy some on dvd as I believe what you are doing is technically illegal. even if you have no plans to sell

What type of VHS? Like ones you recorded, or tapes with Disney movies or something on them? Because if they are store bought, they will have "protection" rights that will cause them to be weird in the event that you are trying to create multiple copies and sell them "illegally"...

ack! no no no! these are old home movies of me and my bro doing totally random stuff...nothing illegal here.

also, i talked to my dad and he said that outside of the recorder, it worked. to be more accurate, he used my TV. and they worked there. plus they showed up on the screen of the camcorder.

the program daddy's using also does capture but it hasn't been very reliable (and this is on two separate computers).

I would suggest getting, as in buying a VHS and DVD player combo with dvd recorder option, like a Panasonic one i have that lets me record DVD>VHS or VHS
