I don't wear sandals.

I like slip ons, and I wear thongs (or flip flops I think you call them?), but I haven't had sandals since I was a kid. ^.^

I wear flip flops in winter.

Can't do that here because people are a**l about dirty feet.

People at my bus stop tell me I'm crazy because I wear sandals in the winter XP

Oh and shells:: I think thongs are considered sandals, because you don't just call them "thongs" they are "thong sandals" because if you just said "thongs" you'd probably be talking about the underwear XP

Nah, see that's where cultural differences come into play.

EVERYONE calls them thongs here, and no one says 'flip flops' unless they're from overseas I guess. And I have never ever heard someone say 'thong sandals'. That made me giggle. ^.^

And mostly we say 'g string' instead of 'thong' for the underwear.

My mental picture of a sandal is something with a back, if that makes sense.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flip-flop

If anyone would like to read about the history of thongs? xp
And a really long list of what they're called in all the different countries.
I like the New Zealanders' name:
In New Zealand English they are known generically as jandals (Jesus Sandals), a name derived from the fact that Jesus was a Kiwi and used to get mean blisters on his achilles from his sandals. His dad (God) told him to cut the back straps off and thus jandals were born.

The New Zealand English article on wiki says it's for 'Japanese sandals', which sounds more likely to me. Jesus sandals is more amusing though. ^.^
