Nose twitching, Twilight shot forward, getting a nose full of grass for his trouble. The chocolate frog he was chasing jumped away at the last second, and the Numa tried to follow it, but it was too dark for him to really see what he was doing. Nevertheless, that didn't keep him from trying.
"Get back here!" he called, chasing after what he thought might be the frog. It was surprisingly fast, and led him into a clearing, bathed in moonlight. It was a pleasant place, so nice that Twilight abandonded the chase and sat still for a change, looking up at the sky.

Ness was flying on her way home. It had been quite a day full of adventure and fun. It was also a day of making friends. She was almost home when she noticed a lone numa out on the grassy area. As she approached him, she noticed he had a bandage on his face.
Ness slowly walked up to him and tried to be better at approaching people. "Um. Hello there... Are... you all right?" She walked up closer. She looked him over; and he seemed all right.

He saw her coming. She was, after all, in the sky as she flew, and stood out against the darkness like a bright star. He didn't move, however, nor did he speak. At least, until she approached him. Then he turned his head slowly, sizing her up, and started to laugh.
"Fine," he said, his voice muffled, though whether that was from his laughter or the bandage was hard to tell. "And you? You're out late, for lady."

 She then relaxed as she realized he was quite ok. She ran a hand in her hair half awkwardly. "Yeah.. I guess I am... but.. I am a grown up. I mean.. it's not like I have a bed time.. and.. I don't think the boogeyman is gonna get me. Doesn't he only come after you from your closet or under the bed?" She smiled.
She watched his face and followed his gaze. The moon. It was so beautiful. She looked up too, the moon reflecting off her almost sapphire blue eyes. "My name is Ness. It's nice to meet you.....?" She hung it out there for him.

So, this one could talk back! Amused, Twilight stared back with an expression of mock fear. "Oh, but haven't you heard? There's more to the night than just boogeymen."
In Twilight's opinion, the night had to be treated with respect. That said, he didn't mind a bit of joking now and then. "It's Twilight," he replied with a twinkle in his eye. "But really, have we established if it's nice yet? What qualifies as nice to you, Ness?"

Ness grew a smirk. Boy, did this guy sound like Equis in all his talking about respect and having fear for the right things. Man.. if it wasn't like everyone was always trying to give her advise and tell her what to do. Ness was the kind of girl who just did what she wanted when she wanted... She decided she'd play it cool and just keep looking at the moon like he was.
"I'm sure you're right of course. Because apparently, I'm still young, brash, and naive. I'm always being corrected by someone." She rolled her eyes. She did consider however. She liked how he was quick to talk to her. She remembered some boys who were so slow to talk and even respond to her.
"I guess we haven't established if it's nice... or if it's not nice. I guess time will tell that one. If I learned anything today.. it's that what starts great doesn't always end so great. But... I'm game. Trying to participate in life a little more and not spend so much time with my video games." She had to admit. This was one of the most beautiful nights she had ever seen.

If Twilight had eyebrows, he might have raised them. Instead, he shifted his wings slightly, wondering exactly what he'd said to get that sort of reaction. It was, after all, all part of the game, and doubly so with unusual girls who dropped on him in the nighttime.
"You're well within your rights to be brash and naive. Personally, I find things more fun that way. And as for youth, you only get it once, so enjoy it." If Twilight had his way, he would never get old. Old people were boring, and forgot how to have fun and enjoy life, and kept cursing the young. How pitiful.
But there was more, and Twilight listened before responding. "Ah, the young lady is a bit bitter, perhaps? Something end on a sour note? But don't worry, you're sweet enough to get through it. Surprise is, after all, the spice of life."
A flavorful sentence, but life had to be experienced as such.

She looked away from the sky at her tail. "I guess I shouldn't sweat it. It's all just stupid boy stuff. One boy comes by... he hangs out with me all day. Says and does nice things.. so when I start to flirt back.. he gets all upset. Starts saying how like he's trying to do right and be honorable. How I'm the only person who treats him like he matters as a person... blah blah blah..." She rolled her eyes and her hand to demonstrate how it just goes into all this long explanation junk.
"Then, I meet another guy who is very cool but... he is always bossing me around. Always telling me things. And.. you know. I swear... if almost every numa I ran into today hasn't called me 'KID'. Like.. i have a ******** name.. I swear. My name is Ness... not kid..." She then thought now is a good time to just... shut up. Obviously noone wants to listen to her wangst about her trouble with boys. And... she was maybe ruining a perfectly good moment while it was happening.
She smiled at him. "I am SO SORRY! I'm being such a brat, and you are being an understanding numa to listen to me. Just make me a deal. If I get too pushy or over bearing. You need to tell me. Because I tend to be rather impulsive. I go where my gut steers me. Which means I do a lot of random things.. say a lot of random things." She was justifying herself. Why was she doing that? Why did she feel the need?

"Ah, boy stuff. I can see how that would be upsetting." Fortunately, Twilight didn't have to dig for details, as the girl was surprisingly chatty about them. Wonderful, it was about time he got to hear an interesting story. And so he listened as she spoke of the "honorable" one and the "bossy" one, and her tirade at being called kid. That made Twilight feel a momentary twinge of guilt, but it quickly passed. After all, he had called her "young lady," not "kid," and what woman wouldn't want to be called that?
And then she apologized for it all, which made him laugh again. "I don't know if this says anything about my life, Ness, but this happens to be the most fascinating story I've heard all day. In fact, I'd invite you to continue if I didn't have some advice to give you." He winked. "And let's keep this between us, shall we?
"Boys are silly. They expect girls to be understanding and civil and all of that boring stuff, while they have to be honorable and fierce and almighty. And it makes them act beastly a lot of the time. But you don't have to put up with it. You can play the game too. It's not that hard, trust me."
And then Twilight just sat back and nodded as though he hadn't just belittled his own gender. "Believe me, being impulsive is fun. Why should you apologize for that? If anything, you need to acknowledge that you're not a prim, proper girl, and go from there."

Ness meshed her paws together almost like she was praying and her eyes welled up. She grabbed his paws. "You are THE BEST PERSON I've talked to all day. I will be your friend for life. You're just so full of awesome, ya know. It's so true!!! I'm not a prim proper girl at all! I don't fit anyone's mold. I'm just me. You're such an insightful person! Can I stay here with you for a while? You are cheering me up so much. And, it would be nice when I finally make it home to go to sleep feeling much better."
She smiled at him. Finally.. a guy who wasn't gonna give her so much crap.

Well, he did tell her to be herself. So maybe Twilight should have seen something coming. But he didn't, and was caught completely off guard when Ness grabbed his paws. Eyes widening, he saw that she was almost crying. He didn't say anything THAT important, did he?
Still, she was interesting, and a girl who wasn't hoity-toity with him was far from bad company. Twilight nodded, still trying to think of a proper response. Surprises may have been the spice of life, but they also left one rather clueless when considering how to proceed.
In the end Twilight smiled, albeit shakily. "See, doesn't that feel better? You've just got to be honest with yourself. Don't pretend, and don't make excuses. I think everyone would be a lot happier that way. And if they're not, they need to wake up and smell the coffee. Er, so to speak," he added hastily, looking around. Fortunately there was no coffee to be seen, so he continued. "Anyway, I don't know if I'm awesome, but I like like I want. And it works for me so far."
In truth, he didn't mind being called awesome. He still wasn't sure about insightful, however.

She then thought she might be making an awkward situation, so Ness dropped his paws right away, blinking and blushing a few times. She helped herself get back into her nonchalant mode. "That's ok Twilight... I really do appreciate the things you say to me. Or.. that you said... It's just so nice to find someone that I don't feel like I've having to explain myself.. or fix something. And.. please forgive me if I am a bit forward. I should warn you I don't really care for ... polite behavior if it's hollow and meaningless. I can't stand the phony things of the world. I like what's honest, pure, and sincere. Even if it isn't nice... In the long run, I can always come to accept and appreciate something i don't like as long as it's honest. "
She turned around a little to look back up at the moon, then looked at the ground where she lightly drew circles in the ground with her paw. "I suppose I am a little overly self absorbed at times. But... all I've ever had was myself. And.. no matter what I want to tell myself... I suppose I am craving adoration from other people. Which is weird... I often don't care what people think of me.. and yet... I want someone to pay attention to me. I suppose I am just a world of grief for my friends." She smiled at Twilight.
"Why are you so easy for me to talk to? I feel like it's ok to just pour myself out to you. If you get tired of me... please tell me to shut up."

Relaxing a bit, Twilight stretched his paws out, then pulled them back in. "I can understand that," he replied, coolness creeping back into his tone. "I mean, if it's fake, what's the point? Sure, a bit of playing pretend never hurt anyone, but there's no point in feeling obligated to behave a certain way, just to make someone else feel better. Especially if it bothers you."
Then, as Ness, continued, talking about herself, Twilight listened- though the story only got half his attention. The other half was on the night itself, and how it brought interesting surprises to him. When she stopped speaking, he waited a beat or two, then yawned. "Hey, it's not like you're the only one who's a bit self-absorbed. And frankly, I don't care what labels people put on themselves. They're all silly if you ask me." Which she hadn't, but Twilight ignored that. "Words are just words in the end. They might make us feel better, but what do they really do?"
In truth, Twilight was tiring of words a little. He was getting stiff from sitting, and he wanted to move around again. Soon, at least.
"And if I get tired of you, I'll leave. And if you get tired of me, you can do the same. Words only get you so far."

"I hope that maybe one day. You'll come by my house and play some games with me. I would like to get to know you better. You have good vibes. You feel like someone I could trust." She then started to stretch herself a little.
She sat there for a while and then she started to feel restless. "Can you fly? Cuz... I was gonna ask if you wanted to fly with me?"

Eyes widening playfully, Twilight flopped over onto his stomach. "Oh?" he asked, trying to sound innocent. "And what sort of games did you have in mind, Ness? I love to play... but I have to say, I play to win."
Of course, his definition of winning was slightly skewed, but that just made the game more fun. And no matter what game Ness had in mind, he would find a way to make it his own. That was just the way that Twilight did things.
At the mention of flying, however, he frowned. "Not well. I mean, they look fancy, don't they?" Still on his stomach, Twilight fluttered his small feathered wings slightly. "But I can't go very high, or very far. I prefer running anyway, or swimming."
