I'm going to be visiting NY for a week with two other theatre nerds, so we are staying in a Hostel to save money for shows. I was wondering if anyone has some good inside tips for getting cheaper tickets? Specifically:
Which shows have good student rush deals? and Which lotterys are possible to win still? or Is it easier to just stand in line for TKTS?
also Any shows that I HAVE to see while there (besides Company since I know that Sondheim+Raul Esparza=amazing) and Which Off-Broadway shows are amazing, since I'm not very well versed in those.
Thanks!

If you become a member at TheaterMania, you can get all kinds of discounts. I recently got tickets to Curtains in the front mezzanine for about $60 each (not including the service charge, of course). A great show, btw ^_~

For rushes, any show with a rush is a good deal if you ask me. With tickets up over $100 normally now, a ticket for $30 is a DAMN good deal, partial view or not. As far as I know student rush can be found at: Company, Jersey Boys, The Producers, Legally Blonde, and Tarzan. And general rush is at: Color Purple and Chicago There might be others as well. The site I use for a list of rushes is a little out dated.
I have not tried a lottory in a long while so I can't say how they have been going lately but really I would say that they would be the same as always. It's totally the luck of the draw. You could go on a day with a million people or a day with only a handful. There is no way to tell how lucky you will be at a lottory.
I always just go for TKTS. If you go to New York alot, one of those sites that gets you discount tickets it a good thing to invest in a memebership, but if you only go to see a few things a year, it's not really worth the cost to join the site. For a few bucks more you can try your luck at TKTS
As for hot shows to see this season, I have not had the chance to see anything yet this season but I hear that Spring Awakening is amazing. A friends saw Company and she liked it. Another said that Curtians started off slow but came through in the end. And then a friend saw Pirate Queen. Said it was good, but not as good as it has been hyped up to be. Hope that helps.

Playbill. com have discounts and it's free to join. Also, TKTS as you know costs 50%. But you can get good tickets.

Don't ALWAYS count on TKTS being 50% off for everything. Some show won't go past 35% I'm pretty sure that I have never seen Producers past that. And if it's a busy weekend and tickets are high in demand, show will only go to 25% It doesn't happen often, but I have seen it happen.

Playbill.com and Theatremania gave me some awesome deals so that the highest price I payed for a ticket (plus service charges) was $75, with the next lowest $55. I've set an itinerary of:
Mary Poppins (not my choice, but oh well) Lovemusik I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change 110 in the Shade
Plus standing in the student rush line for Company Grey Gardens
Plus, I have a Saturday all to myself, so I'm going to grab my iPod, Sudoku, and stand in the TKTS line for an insane amount of time (since I'll be extremely bored) to get an awesome matinee and try rushing Wicked in the evening (the fact that the cheapest ticket I can find is $120 has to mean something).

Hint on Wicked... if you can't win the lotto... check the box office anyways whether or not it is "sold out." The last time I went to see it I had attempted lotto but didn't win. Everyone left so just in case I went inside and went to the window. Ended up getting two GREAT seats day of. Morel of the story... you never know till you try.

There was one ticket left on ticketmaster, but it was $120 in ZZ Orchestra. I'll take your advice though, since it's still cheaper than any tickets besides the lotto.
