 It was another warm day, and Ahote was trying to find a spot of shade to rest under for a while. He had been running all over the Soquili lands, having his normal bits of fun. He was a little lonely, though, as he hadn't come across any other Soquili today. He wondered if they were all laying low due to the heat.
He finally spotted a clear pond with some small saplings growing along its banks. He smiled and trotted over to the water, lowering his head to take a drink before flopping down under one of the young trees. He rolled over on his back, rolling in the cool grass, before returning to his normal upright position. As he laid there, he looked at the pond, watching a family of mallards swimming along.

Neve had spied what she took to be a rather rotund Soquili foal on the wing, and had flown low over the treetops to take a better look. A few glances around told her that there wasnt a mare close by and so she landed some distance away with a thump.
His (for from the scent she could discern that the young'un was male) being alone was a curiosity to her; even her own Kalona mother had never been far when they were growing up, and so she moved forward with caution. Neve was not afraid of a fight but she knew mothers were fierce when roused.
'Hello there..' she said, keeping her voice deceptively light as she looked down at the Usdia. She wondered if she could entice him away from here and gift him to her mother..Izusa had been out of sorts lately and she was sure a small treat would liven her up!

Ahote looked up, a bit startled. He hadn't seen anybody around as he came to the pond, so he wasn't expecting anybody to show up. He looked at the Soquili that had approached. She had wings like Shikoba, but she looked mean. Her soft voice contradicted her appearance, and confused Ahote.
"Um...hi! Where did you come from? I didn't see anybody earlier."
He looked around, thinking that she might have brought others with her, but he didn't see any sign of other life except for the mallard family still swimming around the pond.

'Did I frighten you?' Neve's tone was faux-concerned and she swished her tail as she looked down at the monochrome boy.
'I came from the sky..' she spoke slowly as if addressing some who was a little slow. She spread her wings suddenly, opening them and whisking a tip in front of Ahote's nose in a sudden motion before snapping them closed again in an equally swift motion.
'Are you on your own little one?'

Ahote leaned his head back quickly as the mare whipped her wing in front of his nose. She was a strange Soquili. She sounded like she wanted to trick him or something. It was very strange....and he wasn't sure he liked it. But maybe if he didn't act scared, she wouldn't try to trick him.
"You startled me a little, but that's ok. I live with a Soquili who can fly! His name is Shikoba!"
He thought her next question was a little strange. Why did she want to know if he was alone? Maybe she was evil and mean and was trying to hurt him. He stood up from his spot under the tree and made himself look as big as possible.
"Yeah, I'm alone. Why do you ask?"

'That's nice..' she said, in a tone that clearly stated she didnt much care. She deliberately yawned, her fang teeth flashing swiftly and then she shut her mouth again.
'So your mother isnt nearby then?' Neve asked with a sly look, her tail lashing a little. She hadnt worked out that he was actually a fully grown adult, although his scent was sending conflicting signals now that she was closer.

As Ahote saw the sharp teeth, he smiled a little and stood up.
"Woah! You've got really pointy teeth!! That's so weird!"
He tried to get a closer look, but she quickly close her mouth. When asked about his mother, he became slightly confused. He hadn't seen his mother in years. And why would she ask about his mother, of all things?
"Umm....no...I haven't seen her since I was a foal. Why?"

Neve snorted, about to clip the insolent little colt upside the ear when she heard his latter words;
'What do you mean 'since you were a foal'?' she almost spluttered.
'How can you be an adult? You think pointy teeth are weird!' she let out a hard snort at that thought.
'There are more with teeth like mine then are with stumpy legs like yours.' she clipped slowly around him, taking in his appearance properly.
'You look like a child...'

Ahote watched as the mare walked around him and spoke at him. She seemed a little crazy, and very strange indeed.
"Well, if there are others out there with teeth like yours, I've never seen them! But I have seen others like me. Well, just one.
He thought of Flower, and the intense conversation they had had, but steered his mind back to the circling mare.
"I do not look like a child! I'm just smaller than you are. That doesn't mean I'm a child. I'm an Usida!"

'You wouldnt, I imagine it's hard to see a lot of things from down there..' Neve snickered, slapping her sides with a wings a little, enjoying her joke at the little stallions expense.
'There are many..far more then just the two of your kind.'
She clipped away from him and went to get a drink before speaking to him again.
'An Usdia huh? Well I should tell you little man, that what you are is easy to swallow fodder...there are some Soquili that will find you a perfect bitesize.'

Ahote ignored the mare's joke. His size had never been an issue to him, and he didn't mind when others teased him about his size, because it really didn't matter for him.
But the mare's next statement puzzled him. Easy to swallow? A perfect bitesize? Was she talking about other Soquili eating him? Well, she was obviously lying. Soquili didn't eat other Soquili...or Usida......right?
"That's a lie. Soquili don't eat Usida. That's just silly."

'Small-brained as well..' Neve said airily, bringing a wing around and with a graceful arch of her neck, she arranged a few feathers, grooming them with her teeth before turning her attention back to the Usdia.
'Kalona eat meat...and they arent even the most dangerous of Soquili out there. If I were you, well if I was your size at any rate, I would go find one of the two-leggers huts and never leave it.'

How rude this mare was being! There was no reason to insult him like that! He had been prefectly friendly to her the whole time, even though she didn't exactly deserve it. He listened to her next explination, and shook his head.
"Well, other Soquili and Usida aren't the only type of meat, so I still don't think your kind eat Usida."
He ignored her suggestion to go hide in his teepee with his two-legger. Her lie was absolutely absurd! There was no reason for him to hide!

Neve smirked in amusement at the posturing of the little stallion; there was no way on this earth that he would ever be scary and so his words just made her laugh;
'Oh am I being mean? Oh I am so sorry..'
Her tone clearly showed she wasnt though.
'My dear little brained one, my own mother is a Kalona..' she let that little tidbit of information hang a moment before continuing.
'So this comes from the horses mouth so to speak. You want to come meet her?' she snickered at the thought.

Ahote was really getting angry at this mare. Why was she being so mean to him?
"You're not sorry at all, you stupid mare!"
Ahote had rarely insulted anybody in his life, and he was a bit surprised when the words left his mouth. After taking a quick second to think about it, he grinned a tiny bit and nodded. Yeah, she deserved that one, so there was no apologizing for speaking in anger.
Ahote didn't know what a Kalona was, but he really didn't care. He still didn't believe that a Soquili would eat another of its kind, even if it was a descendant breed like Ahote was. Why should he be afraid of this mare's mother?
"Sure, I'll meet her. I'm sure she's just as mean as you, which is probably where you got your rude manners. But I'll meet her. Show me where she is."
Even though his voice didn't show it, Ahote was a little hesitant to go meet with the other mare. He really didn't know where he was going to go, or what this mare was going to be like, and he was all alone. Who would know if anything happened to him?
