I have read The Color Purple. I think it is an amazing book. I have only cried from a book 3 or 4 times. This was the very first book that ever made me cry. I don't think that it should be banned from schools. I can understand it being kept for high school students only, instead of younger students. Everything that the characters go through, and put eachother through is horrific. The abuse that goes on in this book is indeed heartbreaking, although, I do believe it should be read. It is what has happened throughout history. The story itself is fiction but what happend in it, is not. These things have happened, and I think that it is a good lesson to know what humans are capable of doing to eachother. It is also a story of hope. You hope that Celie will overcome her own setbacks. You hope she will get through everything, and when she pushes through her life, you have an amazing sense of her power over her life. This book was one that I read in high school, it has not been banned in Maryland. If I ever hear of it being banned, I will fight it tooth and nail. Its a reflection on the society of that time, and should be read by everyone. I realize it is incredibly controversial. There are very graphic scenes in the book of abuse.
I am including some links to other things regarding the banning of the book. The first one has some detailed passages about why it may be banned, the controversial matter....
Banning The Color Purple- A Case StudyLots of links on this one where to find more info on the banning...
Banning the Color PurpleThe website of About.com.. good info on the banning and why...
About.com's The Color PurpleI wanted everyone to know that Rocky had put this in The Library thread. I moved it here, because I thought it was an important topic, that needed our attention. I don't check all the subforums everyday and I thought people should see this one. I'm a liberal, and a major reader. I am appalled that people in this day and age are still trying to ban books. I don't understand why we feel the need to censor books and the arts.
