Sweeney Todd is one of Stephen Sondheim's crowning achievements. The musical is about Sweeney Todd, a barber who murders people. In order to dispose of the bodies, he has his accomplice, Nellie Lovett bake their remains into meat pies, which she sells to the London customers. There is a certain amount of intrigue, with two young lovers, a lecherous Judge and his sycophant, the Beadle. It's sometimes funny, sometimes gruesome, and sometimes genuinely heart wrenching.
The music is generally very beautiful, but is at the same time very dissonant. While this makes it somewhat less accessible than some of Sondheim's other musicals, (Into the Woods, and such...) the slight dissonances and deviations from usual melody actually heighten the emotional impact of the songs. It is also very close to a light opera, as very little of it is spoken dialogue. All of the lyrics fit perfectly, and when combined with the music can take the listener from laughter to tears.

Delacroix_Ghost I would glomp everyone except the Judge. I would feel very dirty if I did. *shudder* I wouldn't glomp anyone BUT the judge surprised ! He's so adorable (Alan Rickman the ACTOR) so yea heh.
