It was nearly full dark in New York at the time, minutes before Blue Owl opened its doors. Leading down the metal staircase to where the Owl waited resplendently at its post, the anxious line wrapped around the sidewalk with buzzing excitement. The newly hired bartenders stood at their posts waiting to serve them, the lights dim, and the mood set right. The night began and the crowd flowed in onto the floor of the lounge, quickly filling it. Made up of lowlifes, scum in leather, punks with piercings, the crowd mingled with an uppercrust of the much more beautiful in their evening gowns and suits. White faces and pale hands, enchanting creatures of guile and grace mixed with the unpleasant you wouldn't dare be caught alone with in a dark alley. Scattered here and there were the bewildered, safe yet in constant danger of being led astray.
Altogether it made a scene of indulgence and otherworldliness.
