hmmm i was wondering... wouldnt a medium sized creature be able to hold a large weapon... say something like a greatsword... with one hand if his Strength was high enough?

Yes, they is a feat you have to take to do it. In the complete warrior you can find the feat monkey grip. it lets you hold weapons bigger then normal...

Like BAB of +1...
But then are some weird stuff that goes with the feat like a Med dude can't use a large greatsword as a one-handed weapon. But he could use a large longsword as a two-handed weapon...

DON'T TAKE MONKEY GRIP!

Fools gold, I'm telling you.

First off if you want to wield something of a larger weapon size than you are, you should -probably- go with Strongarm bracers. 2000g magical item that lets you use any weapon you're proficient with a single size higher than you are, without penalties.

Monkey grip is fools gold, easily, Only adding an extra 1d6 damage or something along the lines is not worth it for taking a feat, even if you're a fighter.

As bigfoot was saying, it works with b*****d swords or anything of it's exact type/size (Some other exotic weapons I think), It's normally a 2h weapon, unless you take strongarm bracers(or monkey crap) or you're a samurai, then you can use it as a 1h weapon.

Oh and..Strength has nothing to do with it; strength doesn't make your grip wider smile A large warhammer is 60 pounds, a medium is 30, But a fighter can probably still hold them both up, but without the feats/samurai level/Item he won't be able to wield it without major penalties.

[Rhymes With Orange,] a b*****d Sword does 1d10 damage and requires Exotic Weapon Proficiency to wield one-handed, not Monkey Grip. Theoretically you could wield a b*****d Sword one-handed without proficiency by the benefit of the Monkey Grip feat, but it would be a poorer choice than Proficiency, since Monkey Grip imposes a -2 penalty on attack rolls. Besides, a Samurai level gives you proficiency with the b*****d Sword, not the ability to wield a Large weapon - plus, he was asking about Greatswords, not b*****d Swords.

On the topic of greatswords and Monkey Grip, well, I'd agree that Strongarm Bracers are a better choice, though for no other reason than the attack penalty inherent in Monkey Grip. Even so, an extra 1d6 for the price of -2 to attack is plenty good a feat, and I'd easily consider taking it if it fit my character.

Bigfoot is correct on the requirements, but not on the effect. Without the feat, a Medium character may use a Large Longsword as a two-handed weapon, but may not use a Large Greatsword at all. With the feat, he may use a Large Longsword one-handed, or a Large greatsword two-handed. There is not a way to wield a Large Greatsword one-handed.

Anyway, as for whether a strong medium character could lift a large two-handed weapon at all, well, sure! He just wouldn't be able to wield it effectively, since it isn't balanced for him.

Thank you. I was posting it from memory so I knew I have something wrong.
But sweet! That means Bigfoot the half-ogre can wield a huge greataxe! Cuz hes a large character not Med.

And whats wrong with getting both, Monkey Grip and the strong armbracers?

OKay, as curious as I am to figure that out myself, I don't think it would. Cause for one, you'd be weilding a weapon DOUBLE YOUR SIZE. If you're not taking encumberance penalties (Unless you're a Barbarian who usually wear little armor anyway), you might be a min/maxer.
