Character Discussion Thread- Sweeney Todd

Or Benjamin Barker if you want to get technical about it. :3
Welcome to the official Sweeney Todd discussion thread- the character, not the musical named after him. Of course the main character gets a thread. But if Sweeney weren't a complex character, we wouldn't have much to talk about and therefore the thread would be pointless. Thankfully he is wonderfully complex and a great subject for fangirling discussions. So here we go~

Guidelines for discussion:
Your opinion- on the character, his actions, his relations with his family, anything like that.
Actors- best/worst Sweeney, etc.

Rules:
Follow the main forum rules.
No Sweeney-bashing or Insomnia will kill you in your sleep.

I feel sad for Sweeney. In the end he was trying to get revenge for all his loses, but ended up killing his wife. That really sucks.

the only compliant i have about casting johnny depp as Sweeney is that in some points of the movie you could still a little bit of captian jack sparrow in the way Sweeney reacted to somethings

Yep, that's true. He was much more subtle as Sweeney, but occasionally the Jack Sparrow accent was noticeable.

I also wasn't a huge fan of his singing voice, but it was passable. =D

Yes, but he did realize that it was her at the end of the movie. Hence his reprise of The Barber and His Wife.

He was unaware of who she was at the time, so he didn't knowingly kill her, but he still killed her.

I feel so bad for Sweeney... but I got kinda mad at him when he kept ignoring Mrs. Lovett, and when he killed her I was pissed. But I love the scenes where he talks to her, and when they sing together, and stuff like that, when he is actually paying attention to her.
And, Johnny Depp is soooooo shmexy that I couldnt stay mad at him anyway 3nodding

I think that Mrs.Lovett was a nice character but she lied to Sweeney, she tried to get Sweeney to like her and for him to forget Lucy. Lucy was his only love. So I was sad but a little happy that Mrs.Lovetts died and I am sorry if I offfend you because I think it is wrong to mess with love through lies.

Well, I've never seen Len Cariou as Sweeney, so I can't say anything about him. Sadly. Johnny's my favorite cause he's hot and has a nice a** he has a great singing voice, and shows the darker side of Sweeney, ya know, his mind's more visible to the public. George seems a bit too happy. Like he's still a little bit Benjamin.

Johnny- He sings well and at the right speed. (when they spend too long holding note after note, I get bored.) His singing is beautiful and catches my ear time after time. (but his voice is not currently in my vocal range, and that makes me sad.) He's more screwed up and shows it. But he's cute, so you wanna give him a hug and cheer him up.

George- More pleaseant and happy. He portrayed Sweeney as a more hot-headed person. Beautiful voice, especially in Johanna reprise. He was fun to watch and be afraid of.

ok! I've evaluated all Sweeneys, now time to discuss the character himself. He is a bit naive, as Johnny said, "not dumb, just a half-step behind." Quoting my friend, Jessi: "i think, in his mind, he stopped, like, maturing when he was taken from Lucy and Johanna." I agree. Pobrecito Sweeney, he's known little good, and still hasn't experienced all of the evils the rest of us have. He's known injustice, lust and greed, but apparently not deceit, since he seemed shocked and hurt when he found out Mrs. Lovett lied to him. He is quite innocent behind, ya know, the murder and cannibalism and I believe a hug and a good cry could do the poor thing good. He is complex, because he is sorrowful and vengeful. I could either annoy the hell out of him, or cheer him up a bit with my optimism. Dunno. Could go either way.
