00. Flight
Feet slammed against the damp ground as a lean woman raced through the labyrinth of trees. Rain pelted her face and underbrush tore at her ragged cloths. Desperation drove her—faster, faster, faster. Keep running, don’t stop. Her mind screeched at her. No matter what you must not die. The sky roared to life lighting the sky with brilliant flashes of lightening and filling the heavy air with angry thunder. Mud collected at her feet as she ran, uncaring of everything else around her. She had to escape. She had to keep running. Forever, until the time was right.
“Where arr ya, ya filth’ demon?!” a voice yelled, echoing through the empty forest, “I know yer out there!”
The woman’s eyes widened and her breath hitched as she suddenly stilled, lowering herself closer to the soaked ground. What are you doing? The voice in her head nagged in anger. You have to get out of there, now. Run, you fool! Run! She didn’t move a muscle, her cracked lips closed and her frosty eyes widened—hyper aware. Long waves of amber hair hung past her breast allowing her to blend in better with the dead underbrush.
“Come on out ya demon, I won’t hurt ye, I promise.” The voice cackled cynically drawing closer to the woman’s hiding spot.
Run for it! He can’t hurt you, Haven. Her mind whispered.
Haven’s face softened as she closed her eyes, giving into her senses. As her eyes reopened they flashed bright crimson. A smile curved upwards on her cracked and bleeding lips. I know. She whispered back. But, I really didn’t want there to be any casualties.
The voice laughed hollowly. He knows not who he has messed with.
Indeed. Standing silently Haven rushed though the underbrush eyeing the man’s back. He paused turning around to see if anything was following him. Haven moved quickly out of his line of sight, still slowly creeping up behind him.
The man frowned bitterly and grunted as he trudged forwards, “Ya ******** girl!” He yells, “Yer no match for me!” laugher followed.
Narrowing her eyes Haven dashed towards the unsuspecting man and swiftly pulled him into a headlock. The man gave a choke of surprise as he gasped for air. Haven tightened her hold, squeezing his air passage close, “Y… Yo…u … de…mon …” Frantically the man squirmed hitting and kicking Haven, who didn’t move a muscle. Alter a few seconds the man stilled and slumped forward—dead. Releasing his neck from her headlock Haven watched dejectedly as he fell to the ground, lifeless. The nuisance has been dealt with, now what? Gradually Haven’s crimson eyes returned to their soft frosty color.
Proceed to the place you need to be. The voice paused, doubtful. Try to stay out of trouble, and remember that you must erase ‘Haven’s’ memories. It is vital that you do. You understand?
Yes. Haven replied.
Good. Go on then. Your legs will guide you.
Asking no more, Haven turned and let her feet lead her. She winced as she stepped on a broken piece of glass and frowned in distaste, “Humans are so callous towards nature.” She whispered. Blood had already begun to seep out around the edges of the dirtied glass. Without grimacing in pain Haven lifted her foot up to her waist and hastily jerked the glass from her skin. Haven threw the glass shard to the side. Ignoring the sweltering pain in her foot as her blood leaked out Haven traveled on.
After walking for what seemed like ages Haven stopped at a clearing that led off to a cliff. Her body tingled and she knew—this was the place.
Dashing to the edge of the cliff Haven’s whole body was wracked with shivers. She was terrified, but she knew this was what must be done. Standing at the very edge Haven breathed in heavily and cleared her mind. She closed her eyes, and it began.
You, Haven, do not exist any longer.
Crimson orbs flashed open.
Be born, Keaira—savior, destroyer.
Fiery hair flashed wildly.
Thrive and be alive!
In one movement Haven threw herself from the ledge an ear-splitting scream tearing from her throat as she plummeted towards the ground. White fire engulfed her senses as her mind scorched to life. Then, the blackness came.
Save them or destroy them, it’s your choice—Haven … or might I say, Keaira.
