I've always liked Shonen Jump; Be it Yu-gi-oh/GX, One Piece, Bobobo, or Death Note. But as Anime, they usually fall short of the manga. So far, the death-note anime is everything I wanted it to be and more... with one small exception; Ryuk's Laugh. He's supposed to laugh like goofy: "hyuk, hyuk!" that's what was so characteristic of him appart from just being a shinigami, and I fealt it was a vital part of his character, and that they shouldn't tamper with Ryuk's laugh. Other than that, I think Death Note is Better than most anime out there, as it artfully breaks away from the classic anime archeatypes; 1: a chosen group of people dedicate their life to excelling in a game of some sort. 2: Humans and demons battle it out. I mean Death Note obviously does have demons, but they, unlike most anime demons, are powerless. There are no magical powers, only a magical book, and it can only do one thing. Death Note also touches on some important social issues, the obvious one being capital punishment. However, I disagree with the authors' idea that the United States would surrender to Kira. I, as a U.S. citizen, find this hard to believe. It's true that America is the only country in the "Western World" that still practices it, we would not enjoy OUR criminals being killed by someone that WE didn't ELECT. the U.S. has been founded (among other things) on the right to trial by a jury of one's peers. If we have no idea who or what Kira is, how would we know if he/she/it is a peer to anyone? on a totally different note, I am glad (and shocked) that Matsuda lived to the end of the series. I was upset when L died, but I did end up liking Near (not as much, mind you) But I've always loved when Matsuda made one of his silly comments, because otherwise, a lot of the story would be too dark and dramatic for too long for my tastes. (Keep in mind, I like bobobo and One Piece)
