What is there to say about Bret Hart? He is without a doubt the greatest wrestling talent that Canada ever produced and the greatest wrestler that ever laced up a pair of wrestling boots and wrestled inside a squared circle.
Bret Hart started out wrestling in his father's Stampede promotion. Bret, who never pictured himself as a wrestler, went through film school, but ended up in the family business anyway. Bret was with Stampede when Stu Hart sold it to Vince McMahon in the early '80s, and went on to form the Hart Foundation tag team with Jim Neidhardt and Jimmy Hart in the WWF afterwards. The duo was a heel team for years, and got good heat. They had one of the most devastating tag finishers of the day ,with Jim Neidhardt getting an opponent in a bear hug, and Hart nailing them with a clothesline off the ropes. The team won a WWF tag title with Hart as manager, and afterwards when they turned face.
Hart started wrestling singles in the early 90's, and slowly began drawing a crowd following. That all climaxed at Summerslam '91 when Hart beat Curt Hennig in what was considered the best WWF match of the decade until Razor Ramon vs Shawn Michaels at Wrestlemania 1993. Hart went on to feud with Roddy Piper, and the Mountie for the IC title. He lost it to his brother-in-law, the British Bulldog, Davey Boy Smith, in another classic match.
Hart began eyeing the World title after a while. After Hulk Hogan and Lex Luger failed to beat Yokozuna, Hart got the win, and shocked the world, especially with his smaller stature. This led into what was Hart's most intense fued of his career, with is own brother. Owen began imulating and imitating his older brother at WWF shows, until he attacked him. The feud really got over when he upset Bret at Wrestlemania X. Owen even cost Bret the World title by forcing his own mom to throw the towel in during a title defense against Bob Backlund.
Another big feud started with Shawn Michaels. In 1996, the two faced off at Wrestlemania in a 60 minute Iron Man match. The two went the 60 minutes without a pin, and as Hart was leaving the ring, Gorilla Monsoon ordered the match to continue. Shawn pinned Bret, who was upset over the decision. He was under the impression that if the time period ran out, the champ got the belt back. Hart went on leave for a while, and came back, after signing with the WWF (over a much larger offer from WCW) Hart started feuding with Steve Austin. Austin didn't care for Hart's long hair or pink tights, and the two had some classic matches. After a lose, Hart forced Austin to start using the Stunner (previously known as the Stun Gun) again over the Million Dollar Dream after Hart rolled him up in the move.
at the 1997 Royal Rumble Austin illegally eliminated Hart, Vader and Undertaker to win, but that didn't set well with Bret Hart. Gorilla Monsoon made a final four match for the In Your House PPV, where the winner would face Shawn Michaels at Wrestlemania 13. Shawn found out that Bret was booked to beat him, so Shawn, the coward that he is, forfeitted the WWF title on a Thursday edition of Raw, due to the unwhillingness to job to Bret Hart at WM13. The Final Four match between hart, Vader, Austin and Undertaker because a WWF title match. Bret Hart won the match and lost the title the next night to Sid because of Austin. Austin's growing popularity led to the two switching roles (Austin to face, Hart to heel) and led to Hart joining up with his family members in the new Hart Foundation, along with Brian Pillman. After jumping Austin, the Undertaker and Michaels on numerous occasions, Hart started feuding primarily with Michaels, which led to the 1997 Survivor Series. This is where the infamous screwjob occured, where Hart was counted as submitting to his own move by order of Vince McMahon in order to get the title off of him (Hart was asked to leave the WWF) before he left for WCW. Hart showed up in WCW, helped Sting win the World Title, and went on to feud with Ric Flair. Flair was out of WCW and being sued before the feud finished, and Hart went on to turn heel, and attack Randy Savage in a match against Hogan for the World Title. Hart won the US title, and feuded over a short period against Lex Luger. Hart lost the title, and it was put into a tournament while he recuperated from knee surgery in late 98. Shortly after he returned to action, his brother Owen died in a tragic accident at WWF's Over the Edge Pay per view in May of 1999. After appearing at the summer Georgia Dome Nitro, Hart said he still wasn't sure if he was going to come back to wrestling, but he changed his mind later, and issued a challenge to Hulk Hogan for a world title shot. Sting turned heel though, and after trying to save Hogan from getting a beating, Hart got whacked with a ballbat by Luger.
Hart returned to the ring the next night in a tag match with Hogan against Sting and Luger, but Luger hit Hart in the face with the bat. Hart's comeback made him a major face, and after Ed Ferrera and Vince Russo took control of WCW, Hart kept being pushed as a bigtime face. The WCW title was vacant and they did a 32-men tournament and Bret Hart defeated Chris Benoit in the finals at the WCW Mayhem PPV to become the WCW champion. Bret Hart faced Goldberg at Starrcade, where Goldberg kicked Bret in the head and that was where Bret hart suffered a concussion, but Bret was unaware. In that match, Piper rang the bell when Hart applied the sharpshooter. Hart didn't want to win the match that way, so he said the title was vacant and he beat Goldberg the next night to win the title back, but Hall and Nash helped Bret and the nWo was back. Bret Hart faced Terry Funk on Thunder in a No DQ match and he got more hits to the head there and Bret was getting a lot of headaches.
Bret Hart faced Kevin Nash like a week before the Souled Out PPV where Bret was scheduled to face Sid. The match ended in a no contest. Doctors informed Bret that he suffered a concussion and Bret Hart was stripped of the World Title.
A few months later, Bret Hart was put in a storyline where he attacked Goldberg with a shovel. Bret Hart had an interview on Thunder and blamed Goldberg for ending his career and everything.
In mid October of 2000, WCW released Bret Hart. On October 26, 2000 Bret Hart announces his retirement from pro wrestling.
